Packers Question of the day - Takeaways from the loss

It was ugly, and not much can be taken away from Sunday's loss in a positive manner.

While the Packers fell to the visiting Cowboys 30-16, a chain of events were set in motion. Fans are all caling for Mike McCarthy's firing, some even wanting to see Brett Hundley replace Aaron Rodgers. No, I'm not kidding.

With the horrible loss put aside, what were your thoughts on the game?

This makes Chicago a "must-win" with an Atlanta team coming up the following week that is a threat to run these Packers right of the field. In all honesty, Chicago is not only a must-win, but a game that needs to be a statement game. Somehow this Packer team needs to hang a big ol' can of whoopass on Chicago...I have no idea where that will come from.

CBs, RBs, poor tackling, all of these are factors but if Aaron Rodgers does not return to this team none of those factors will matter. This would be easier to accept if Rodgers was trying to play through an injury or if he was out of the game with an injury (which he might as well be). This offense may be stale but if Rodgers hits his open receivers the offense would still be working fine. The Packers left at least 14 points on the field yesterday. 4 when they ran that idiotic empty back field on first and goal and Rodgers fumbled. Eventually they made a FG following Burnett's pick. At least 3 more when A. Rodgers threw behind a wide open R. Rodgers. Then again when he missed Cobb wide open in the end zone. At least another 3 points were lost when Rodgers threw his pick on the opening drive in the second half. With the protection our OL is providing Rodgers should be picking defenses, any defense, apart. The idea of WRs not getting separation is ridiculous since he still made some tight throws yesterday to Adams and Jordy and he was perfect on the Packers one TD drive. A. Rodgers play is hurting the team, period. And it's up to MM to hold him accountable and get it corrected. Either with a shot in the head or a kick in the butt as I posted last week, or a benching or a shrink or whatever it takes but as bad as he's played there is plenty of football left in this season to get Rodgers and this team back on track. IMO its up to MM to fix Rodgers and its up to TT to bring in some reinforcements at RB and CB. Da' Bears will be hear soon. Thanks, Since '61

I was shocked to find out that the Packers were ahead in TOP yesterday...I was all but convinced they would have been 28 minutes or less.

I won't be popular for this, but in defense of #12, he threw 42 passes and connected on 31 (right around 74%). His ypa wasn't great (around 7) and neither was his ypc (around 9.5), but he was efficient. They might have only run for about 80 yards as a team, but the Packers have won many games in the past with similar stats.

Not original, but a problem that I'm seeing is that the offense is not hitting on the "big" play...and by that, I mean the clutch play, not the 60-yd TD passes. This used to be a "catch-and-run" team with lots of 5-7 yard quick slants to Jennings and Driver that turned into back-breaking 15 yard completions based on RAC. Opponents started sitting on those routes, but the emergence of #87 changed that dynamic. Ball security never used to be an issue, but it is now. You're not going to win when you turn the ball over 4 times...and, you know, I think they might have had a shot yesterday if they were at least break-even in the +/- category.

Getting Rollins back for Thursday will be a key, since I don't see Shields coming back any time soon, and Randall will clearly need to sit for a couple weeks. I don't know if Hawkins played any defensive snaps yesterday...if he's ST only, he's not helping this team and they need to find someone who CAN help this team. Goodson was so-so for him yesterday, but he can't be your nickel or dime CB.

I do think the stats don't tell the whole story though. A decent chunk of those yards and completions came in a meaningless drive at the end of the first half, and at the end of the game when the Cowboys were content with allowing completions but keeping people in-bounds. What's concerning is that very few passes are on target, which makes even the easy plays much more difficult. For example, Montgomery made a nice catch at his shoelaces on a third down conversion that could easily have fallen incomplete due to the bad throw, or conversely could have gone for much more yardage had it been a good throw.

I don't disagree with you. Hitting an open receiver with a lousy pass is still a completion, even if it means he gets no RAC. Even at 75% and 7.0 ypa, that should equate to matriculating the ball down the field. Still, what it shows is that he's capable of hitting receivers and at a 75% clip, whether those passes are in garbage time or during those good drives that we saw early in the first half or in the second half (even that one that ended in an INT was a good drive up 'til that point). He never used to throw red-zone INTs...

Dobber - you are correct that the Packers are not hitting on the big play but most of that is due to poor execution by Aaron Rodgers and sometimes due to the receivers. He is just not seeing or not throwing to receivers who are open. I've never seen anything like this for more than a few bad games which any player can have. But now after 17 games going back to last season it's not a few bad games it is just bad play. Thanks, Since '61

The question is: WHY is this absent? Several years ago it seemed that teams adjusted to this with the Packers and started squatting on these quick-hitters. That's when #87 emerged, whether it was because of who he was or how the offense needed to change to meet the challenge, I don't know.

I don't disagree with the poor play part of your argument. The issue is that there's not been enough response on the part of the team to find new ways to attack defenses. Montgomery last night was the first hint we've seen in awhile. My bet is that, against Chicago, Montgomery is run to death in this offense or he's almost completely ignored. There won't be any in-between.

You are so right on most everything you mentioned. TT is going to need to find a change of pace RB. Starks is out and Lacy isn't going to make 25 carries and 10 catches a game routine when he's nursing a bum ankle. Monty can do the backfield catches, but not the RB relief that Lacy needs.

The top 3 CBs are out for several weeks. Shields could come back sooner, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Understand that affects the run defense as well.

The passing game and offense go through Rodgers. If he's not right...it's going to be broken. Cook being hurt is probably changed what they wanted to do with this offense. You may question that assumption (I do at times.), but they don't have anyone running the middle of the field right now. Remember MM saying you need a big target in the middle of the field in today's offense? Well they don't have it right now. I suspect that after this year, you will have seen the last of Clements and maybe the QB coach. If I was the WR or RB coach I wouldn't get to comfortable either. This team isn't right and hasn't been for some time. They have been in a negative spiral for 2 years. It can't be fixed during the season. The Packers can salvage what they of the season, but an attitude adjustment is hard when you are playing short handed.
One last thing....teams aren't rushing Rodgers too much so the Oline has an easier time of pass blocking when they are 5 vs. 3 or 5 vs. 4. Maybe they aren't as good as we think? Another question for another day.

Good assessment Handsback.

- need a change-of-pace back (for the last 5 years)
- Shields is done, even if he comes back this time
- No TE down the middle. No TE really
- coaching clusterf#ck on offense. House cleaning required
- teams are inviting us to throw and we can't. Crazy true
- will ride it out to the end of the season - unfortunately true

Can MM clean these up?

Handsback - you may be correct that our OL is not as good as we think, however, it's obvious that Rodgers is getting an exceptional amount of time to throw the ball. Any professional QB given the amount of time and talent that Rodgers has would pick an opposing defense clean and he is just not getting it done. It doesn't make any sense to me. Thanks, Since '61

The problem between Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy arose two years ago. It publicly surfaced when we saw them arguing on the sideline.

I remember reading a quote from Aaron Rodgers about the same time saying how important it was for him to play for the approval of his coach. What the quote didn't say but implied was that AR must respect his coach to play for his approval. I don't think Aaron Rodgers respects Mike McCarthy as a coach anymore.

I think we've all had a relationship at one time when we had a great deal of respect for a person but as time went on that respect eroded. I think for what ever reason that has happened between Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy.

When professional coaches can no longer get an acceptable level of performance from highly paid professional athletes, coaches get replaced. It happens in all professional sports all the time.

Gunter had a nice game against the Giants and Beckham and was the best CB for us that game. Sources include PFF, McGinn and Wilde. Gunter moved from the left side to the right side CB against Dallas, and had a terrible game. I've no idea if that move was causative or if Terrence Knight and Beas are that good. No doubt they are good though.

Cutting a young player after 1 bad game is too knee jerk of a reaction for me.

Exactly.. Thank you for naming some sources. I was blanking on them. I know I heard it and seen it different places.

Gunter had a bad game. Very bad game no question. But to cut him because of it?

That being said my question is why haven't we seen Hawkins since the Lions game? He had 1 bad play and we haven't seen him since. Yet Gunter had a bad game and continued to play, and Goodson just is not a good player.

That won't happen, they will keep Gunter around just so they have a body out there but I would like to see them give the rookie Hawkins a look, this is only Gunter's 2nd yr so what do they have to lose by making a switch? At least Hawkins has some upside. Hawkins has speed and more athletic ability that they can coach up. Like I said earlier I was waiting to see when Gunter would be exposed as a starting CB and boy was he,it's quite obvious he lacks the physical tools to cover the better receivers, you can't polish a turd

UNACCEPTABLE? That's the best word you can find to describe what you saw out of Gunter last night? Get the dictionary and revise your comment because it's a ridiculous understatement. That guy should have been pulled from the game he was so outclassed. He hurt the team. They would have been better off with Jeff Janus playing DB, at least if the ball was near him, he might of had a chance to catch it!

1. Eddy gives it everything he has but hey, he has obviously nuzzled up to the dinner plate a little more. I mean doesnt he care? The analyst were even joking that no way this guy is 234. More like 254. That is not a guy trying to win a SB.

2. Rogers is an easy one. What's the diff now from the past. First he used to have two very talented go to Tight Ends to pass too if Jordy hadn't got open down field.
Second, he did have some more agile runnig backs he could pass to out of the back field.
Third, his receivers of old were reliable and caught most of the passes. Including quick slants because they were quick.
All that is gone now so what is he supposed to do. R rogers is the worst TE in football. Adams catches every other pass. Cobb is doing ok but Jordy has lost at least a step and is not running free.
No weapons to throw to would make one very unhappy at best.

Actually Bart Starr may be able to help A. Rodgers. Rodgers and Starr had a very good relationship before Bart fell ill. Rodgers has a great respect for Bart and how he played. In fact it was Bart who impressed upon Aaron that it's better to take a sack then throw a pick. If Bart was still well he might be able to speak with Aaron and help him get straightened out. This is a situation that requires more input than less. If I were the Packers, I would reach out to Mike Holmgren to consult about what's going on with Rodgers. Of course that would require putting many egos aside which will never happen. I doubt that it's get fixed by Thursday. Thanks, Since '61

Sick to my stomach. Something is going on mentally with Rodgers. I don't see him snapping out of it anytime soon. If I'm the Bears, I do what Dallas did: rush 3 or 4, drop everyone into coverage. You don't have to blitz to get Rodgers rattled -- he already is!

Lacy is hurt and Rodgers can't find an open receiver anyway. It's going to be an ugly game between two struggling teams. Even if the Packers somehow win, it's against a 1-5 Bears team that is awful.

Rodgers has lost his focus, and isn't playing with an edge anymore. He's got his MVP's and Super Bowls, and he doesn't have Brady's intensity to win. The change in Rodgers attitude and focus and obvious, and it all lead one place - he's more concerned with the little Hollywood girlfriend than he is his profession. AND I AM 100% serious about that comment. He should make an honest woman out of her and maybe he'd be more focused once he has her "locked down".

Ask yourself this - how many yards would Tom Brady be throwing for with these WRs and this offensive line - the answer is "as many as he wanted to". It's ALL on Aaron Rodger's steep fall from the top of the QB pack. This is the most disheartening thing to see.

Is there any presidence to this? Someone's skills deteriorating so fast. Like a light switch.

Up until this point, when they've lined up #18 or #88 in the backfield, it's telegraphed run because they don't throw to those guys. By throwing to Montgomery out of the backfield, they broke their usual tendencies and I don't think DAllas was ready for it. Chicago will be ready for it, but to be ready for it means that they've got to give something up...likely on the outside.

As you know I've been trumpeting T.Montgomery being used more often in the role we saw him in last night; I hope we see it evolve further!

As the season progresses I'd love to see a healthy E.Lacy on the field for approximately 70% of the offensive snaps with an occasional substitute by J.Starks (when he's healthy), or whoever the back-up RB is, here and there on early downs when Lacy needs a breather; otherwise, all the remaining snaps should go to T.Montgomery who should be getting trained during practices to play out of the backfield as his primary offensive role going forward. This training needs to include proper pass blocking as he looked pretty bad in attempting even a chip block before he was suppose to set-up for a screen pass.

Like I said before he's got the body composition and size to allow him to handle some pass protection tasks, so IMO it's all about coaching him on how to do it effectively throughout a game. I really believe he could be our team's T.Riddick (60-80 pass catches out of the backfield)!

I would argue (and did above) that if the Packers were even in +/- yesterday rather than -2, that they've got a shot to win that game...despite their issues.

What #88 gives them out of the backfield is a checkdown guy taking advantage of the flat and the underneath stuff where the Packers haven't made hay in years. It might make a difference in how the opposition defends the outside receivers if he can gash them enough...

completely agree... They have first and goal inside the 5. Next play Rodgers fumbles. If they score a TD there it changes the game.

The 2 areas the Packers offense has been lacking is the underneath stuff and over the middle with a TE. While the TE will have to wait till Cook comes back, the underneath stuff should be helped by Montgomery.

I mentioned this before but in 2014 they got their asses kicked by the saints. but in that game they discovered that Lacy could catch the ball well out of the backfield. He became a true weapon the rest of the year.
The big positive I take from this game is that they similarly found a true weapon they can use out of the backfield with Montgomery. Can McCarthy become creative in how they use him now? And run plays with him to open other players.

Yes the Saints game, but as I recall he did not use Lacy much that way after. He may with Monty because we are so thin but I still doubt he will anyway. Part of problem is threat goes away from not using it. Im just so sick of MM not getting most out of what he has and seemingly has to be forced into it by circumstances. The way Rodgers is playing I highly doubt he would find an open receiver. He appears to be second guessing most of his throws and when he decides to throw it's often late. He used to be reactionary, in other words
he saw the open receiver before the receiver was open. He now appears to wait and wait and wait. I have no faith that MM could even find the door knob to exit a toilet, let alone make the needed changes to create a positive change in the direction of the team.

I am not nearly as enamored with the notion of Monty in the backfield as RC and Dobber. I don't want Monty running stupid swings and leaking out into the flat. That's crap. He needs to run bona fide WR routes, including posts up the seam and everything else, even if he shifts to the slot at 5 or 8 seconds left on the play clock, or goes into motion. A real route where he is not looking at the QB the whole time but is sprinting downfield and making a hard cut against a mismatched defender.

The purpose as I see it in having Monty in the backfield is to force a match-up problem for the defense. Monty has to show that he is effective as a RB. So far, I haven't seen him display any vision as a RB. He has to run btw the tackles at times. Right now he has a 1.2 yd average per carry (5 carries for 6 freaking yds and a career average of 2.5 yds/carry). If that's all he can do, this conversation is moot as the formation won't help GB. Lacy has good hands and can run swings and leak out into the flat, and he is a much better runner and blocker than Monty. Don't need Monty to do something less well than Lacy can do it. I'm fine with Monty 7 yards deep with Rip in there as a blocking back, too.

If Monty and Rip are in the backfield on 1st and 10, for example, that has to be enough for the opponent to play a defense that honors the threat of a run. If so, Monty then goes into motion or simply shifts to the slot, turning the formation into a 4 WR set, maybe with trip/bunch formations. Still can run Rip on occasion out of it - AR has to read the defense to decide where to deploy Monty. [Edit: I'm not saying that Monty can never run a swing or just leak out into the flat.]

The big thing that I liked about Montgomery in the backfield was the pass routes they had him running from there... He wasn't running simple swing passes. They actually had him running pass patterns from the backfield. That is what I want from him. As the game wore on it felt like they were figuring out how to use him more in that role and the more comfortable they were using him that way.

What I wouldn't mind seeing moving forward is seeing a 5 WR set, and put Monty in the backfield. They would have a lot of options with that. They can run it they can pass it. I think Montgomery would be better running it when they spread the other team out. Not running the tradition I formation and stuff.

Something else I wouldn't mind seeing them do is try to doe stuff schematically to create confusion. Put Cobb and Monty together in the backfield. Create misdirection...
But that would take creativity by our coaches...

I'll be honest: I expected MM to sit him for a series there later in the second half, but then they pushed that TD drive and he looked pretty good. Even on that opening drive of the half he looked good until that brain-fart INT. If these game performances haven't fallen into the category, a benching--even for one series--for a guy who has played minimal regular season snaps might be the public shaming #12 needs at this point. And if Hundley ended up sparking this offense? All the better.

From McGinn: "“The one to Randall would have been nice,” said Rodgers. “Obviously the fumble down there kills us. I missed Richard. Other than that I felt better. I felt my movement was good tonight."

I would agree that he is apparently not his own worst critic.

OMG! The Packers lost a football game and played poorly in the process.

I expected to spend the day in the dark, but to my surprise, the sun did rise today.

The primary problem is that the Packers have won too many games over the past 10 years and have spent year after year picking replacement players near the bottom of the barrel. Chances are better to improve your football team when you get to pick near the top; just like when we used to play sandlot baseball games when we were kids.

Things are designed to equalize/change in the NFL and that is a good thing.

I think we are seeing how good the team is as a whole without #12 playing at a MVP level. For 6 or 7 years now the deficiencies of the draft and develop with little or no dipping into FA to bring in extra veteran leadership is rearing its ugly head. When will consistently being 1 of the 3 or 4 youngest teams in the league, drafting at the bottom of the 1st rd finally catch up with you? I think its now.

The Patriots draft at the bottom yearly also.
The Packers have simply taken some wrong players, ignored positions in need, over valued a couple others, and sign FA has been or never were's.
The coaching, all aspects, are in need of an over haul to some degree.
Players and coaches when applicable, based on performance, must be openly and vigorously held accountable. ...thrown under the bus if needed, so change in play/coaching is made or a decision to release becomes clear for the good of the team.

The bottom line is that there is no other team out there like the Patriots and it comes from the coach. The Packers are likely the best comparator for them over the last many years, but--as much as I hate to admit it--the Patriots are a unique animal. Anyone who tries to compare to what they do is destined to lose.

No doubt, the Patriots are in a class by themselves. But the Packers are trying to emulate them at least on the business side.Years ago the Kraft's bought up property and built theaters, hospitals, retail stores, etc. Income from those sources do not have to be shared with the rest of the teams in the NFL and while they can't use the income for players salaries it can be used by the organization for things like stadium upgrades etc. Now for the last several years we are seeing GB buying up property near and around Lambeau and building the Title Town District

I disagree this is a coaching problem. This is a Rodgers throwing it 5 yards over the head problem, this is a collection of fair to middling receivers problem, this is having only 1/2 a running back on the whole roster problem, this is having to have Gunter try to cover someone problem.

Accountable? For sure and always. And these players are playing poorly.

Kewl story bruh.

Except the WORST part of this team has been and currently is the high draft picks (starting with the QB).

Pass defense has been destroyed by injuries. Run D has mostly been solid. Run O (when they've bothered to run) has been solid.

injuries, play calling, 1 good thing (run D) out of 8 aspects of the game. cry me a river, this team is AVG at best. Parity in the NFL is here for a reason. Come to grips with it, whatever the reason its our turn to tread water in the middle of the pack.

Who would have thought that the player (Jacob Schum) who everyone wanted to run out of town would be the Packers "Star Of The Day", a 47 yard punt that stopped dead on the 2 yard line. Even less of a chance that he would not punt again in the game because the offense kept dropping the ball on the field.

- The Packers 1st down offense is historically bad and was even worse on Sunday.

- They need their top 3 DB's back badly.

- At what point do we assume A Rod will never be what he was? It's been nearly a full season of poor play from him, at 32 years of age. Maybe the idea of giving your 23 year old backup some run isn't so ridiculous.

- Jordy Nelson isn't the same player. He plays scared.

- Why didn't we call up Don Jackson from the PS to be the back-up RB vs running undersized WRs out of the backfield (which hasn't worked in 1.5 years).

- They need to restructure Clay Matthews this off-season, or force him to take a pay-cut. 13 million a year for his next-to-nothing production is unacceptable.

- Watching A Rods lack of fundamentals makes you wonder how much, if any, control or sway MM has over him at this point.

- With all the revenue steams coming in, do the Packers leadership (Murphy/B of D) have the fortitude to hold TT, MM and/or Rodgers accountable for their sub-par results?

'- They need their top 3 DB's back badly.'

At this point I would settle for 1 of the 3...

'- Jordy Nelson isn't the same player. He plays scared.'

The one game that Nelson looked like his former self the offense had by far its best performance. (Lions first half) I don't think this is a coincidence.

'- Why didn't we call up Don Jackson from the PS to be the back-up RB vs running undersized WRs out of the backfield (which hasn't worked in 1.5 years).'

This is the question that I just can't figure out an answer to. You simply can't go into a game with 1 RB who is probably at 75%.
It completely limited their play calling and what they could do offensively.

I would argue that Nelson looks frustrated. He had that sneaky-fast burst to go with his technical skill. Now he's having to get by mostly on technical skill. It takes time to get over an ACL, but at this stage he's looking like he's a possession receiver and may never get that step back.

Everyone points to Don Jackson asking why he didn't get called up...and I agree that I think he should have been called up. Do we honestly think that Don Jackson was the difference in yesterday's game? Honestly?

Does CMIII earn his money? Hard to say. With an improved Perry on the field, his chances will come. Keep in mind that he's missed at least one full game and has 3.5 sacks on the season...that translates to at least a sack per game. Keep in mind also that Dallas had only given up 7 sacks up until yesterday's game, and the Packers got 2 even playing from behind virtually the whole day.

Nice post, Dobber. Jury is out on Nelson as a deep threat. Give him 18 months. Jackson might have helped against Detroit (IDK - I've never actually seen the guy play), but no, probably not the difference.

CM3's cap hit next season is $15.2 with a $4.1 dead money charge. I have him as a Green+ or Red - player. He needs to take a pay cut even if he ends up with 12 sacks. Probably won't happen though, not with that dead money charge.

Tretter is everyone's golden boy, but he had a bad day - his 2nd bad day in six games. I am not sold on Tretter at OC as a Plus player and have never believed that he can play OG at more than a mediocre level in our system. Linsley is (or was anyway) better.

I agree Reynoldo. I watched some highlights on Jackson, he is smallish and very elusive, but that was against college D. He posses speed to run all way if he finds light! How it will transfer to the NFL, it is hard to know...
Regarding Jordy, I'm more in that Jordy still needs to break rust from himself (hands at the first place!) and than we will be able to make judgements... Jordy has flashes of before- injury himself on several occasions... Lets hope it continuos in the right direction. Bad throws from Aaron does not help the case...
I completely agree with you that Corey is true center and much better one than J. C. I see J. C. as back up for every spot on the line if you do not expect excellent job there, just OK. I'm sure J. C. will deliver...
Also, I think that it is the time for Corey to start practicing, isn't it?

#1 Takeaway is this team from the top on down has killed us. Starting with a inept GM who only likes to draft his way. Last few yrs our CBs have been getting beat with easy deep routes. You would think he would stop drafting short avg speed CB and the one CB that is Tall is slow and ad UDFA at that. Then you go into a game with 1 RB thinking you are gaming the system using a WR as a Rb. You TT(we) looked dumb with that move. Especially when you had a chance at other RB. TT never drafts the one thing you cant teach... SPEED. This team has lacked speed since... Forever. Then MM has the same plays from 10 yrs ago. Do you ever look at the replays and see the WR running routes half speed or those same comeback routes. We do not utilize the entire field Teams see that now MM. Wake Up!!!
AR- I am lost for words on his play. His confidence looks gone.

Even though you can point out this loss mostly on Rodgers. This shithole this team is in is directly TT. We as fans and owners of the team need to hold him accountable.

Mashed Potato Mike's seat is finally hot!! His inability to create mismatches and be creative is magnified ten fold with Rodgers playing like shit and tough personnel situations. Meanwhile Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brisset go out and hand Brady a 3-1 record upon his return thanks in part to Belichek scheming to the strengths of his team and the weaknesses of his opponents instead of taking the "this is what we do" appraoch..... Sorry to all you stubborn fans that can't see the forest from the trees. and will cling to 2010 through thick and thin. This is the NFL, if you can't change and adjust you will get passed up. THis is what we are seeing with the Packers. Mike is not willing nor may he be able to adjust his approach and schemes as defensive coordinators are using 10 years of tape of the same thing week in and week out. If you aren't going to change things up especially in the wake of everyone knowing what to expect then the organization needs to move on. It's been great and they've had great success but it's the NFL and if your approach isn't fluid and flexible it is stubborn and will fail. At this point they will tread water but part of me hopes hopes they sink otherwise it could be an AJ Hawk situation where they hang on to the status quo for 3 years too long before making the necessary changes that will spark success. Nothing is going to change. Mike has proven that for the last 17 games as Rodgers flounders.

McCarthy is not a potato of any flavor.

But there is Awful Aaron, there are Rotten Receivers, and there is Gross Gunter.

I am sure the coach didn't draw up the play where the QB throws it 5 yards overhead of the wide open player or right into the gut of the corner to the point where even the corner was stunned it hit him there. I am sure the coaching didn't tell the receivers to "and whatever you do don't get open and if you do happen to get open then by all means drop the ball!" And I am sure the coaching didn't tell Gunter to always trail 5 yards behind the receiver and as often as you can make sure you fall down.

I don't see a failure of coaching and play calling I see a failure of the players and how they execute.

One could view that as players being unprepared and not focused aka not coached up. People forget the fact that ALL rosters in the NFL all have serious talent. Only those teams that have their talent maximized through great coaching are successful. 2010 we rode the pass rush and the golden arm of #12. Now that #12 isn't playing like a top 5 QB the "this is what we do," approach to each and every game is not working and McCarthy is lost. Does anyone seriously think this is going to turn around with the current coaching regime/structure of this team? It's the NFL!!! Be fluid or be fired!

I think it has a lot more to do with Awful Aaron and Rotten Receivers. When the quarterback stands there bouncing on his toes for long, long times and has nowhere he can see to throw the ball there is a problem. I think the coaching was fine and they came up with some good wrinkles in how they used Montgomery out of the backfield and how they tried to still run even though they only had half a running back on the entire roster available.

The plays are fine other than the QB is missing the open guy and throwing at wrong times and inaccurately so that even when completed the receivers are diving or having to stop their routes to catch the ball. It is pretty clear by your little nickname that you hate the coach and will never give him credit. If they lose it is his fault and if they win it is in spite of him to you I am sure. But what I saw was a QB who could not throw it well enough and fumbled when the game was still in doubt.

It's time. I'm calling for it. Ready?

Mike McCarthy needs to be fired and Aaron Rodgers should be traded to the first AFC team willing to give up 2 1st round picks. Ted needs to retire. Elliot Wolf should be the new GM.

Start Brett Hundley. Start Abby, Monty and Janis. Maybe Cobb. Let Jordy heal, but understand that he's never going to be a deep threat again. Cut Adams. Get rid of Lang after the year. Go young. Tell Clay it's time to take a pay cut. Tell Sam it's time to retire with those head injuries.

In other words, blow it up. I'm tired of the same old, same old for a YEAR. I'm tired of the excuses. I'm tired of the hubris.

This team sucks and the only way to get better is to cut out the sickness.

Go anyone but the Vikings.

I wouldn't be opposed to some of this, but it's got about a 1% chance of happening. What's far more likely is we'll limp into the playoffs, get beat again, but not be justifiably bad enough to completely overhaul the system. If we aren't Super Bowl bound this year, I'd almost rather tank the season in order to get a higher draft pick. Guys like Jonathan Allen, Desmond King, Christian McCaffrey, Leonard Fournette, and Jabrill Peppers won't be available if we pick in the early 20's.

I should've brought an umbrella with me today since the sky seems to be falling.

I hated watching the game yesterday too, but a bad loss doesn't mean the season is over. Adjustments will be made. Capers didn't all of the sudden become a horrible coach because they're trying to scheme with 3rd string starters. Rodgers hasn't suddenly become a horrible human being and washed up QB just because of a slump. Is Cam Newton washed up because the Panthers are 1 - 5? Wasn't he just the MVP last year and headed for the HOF? Now he's walking out of press conferences again.

I'm looking forward to the turnaround when the pieces start to fall into place again. I think Lacy showed toughness that will bode well later in the year. I think Montgomery is climbing the ladder to being a real #2 WR. Rodgers will figure it out. All this other nonsense will soon be a distant memory.

Good teams with any hopes of championships don't put a product like that on the field like the Packers did yesterday, ever. They have down games but not a consistent lack of production for 17 games like this. It's time for change and if you can't realize this then you're just as stubborn as McCarthy and his approach to his team and to each game. Let's give them another season? just prolonging my "I told you so" and wasting another year of Rodgers career. This team is not good. From the top to the bottom it is bad. The front seven has been ok but disappeared vs a good O-line. McCarthy has no ability to coach his way out of this and since his "This is what we do" is not working his time has to be numbered. This is not fixable with the current approach to the clear and present problems. The NFL has lots of turnover and if you don't get better you are getting worse and this is not a plateau'd stagnated level of decency, this is a full on tailspin that will only end with HUGE changes.

What career are we wasting when people like you are saying Rodgers isn't even a good QB anymore? Rodgers is a big part of the problem right now and he will be a big part of the solution. The defense is going to end up being top 10, and as soon as the offense adjusts, this will continue to be at the top of the heap. I think there is so much hand wringing because of the last 17 games or whatever. That kind of thinking is pretty crazy, because like McCarthy keeps reminding us (and he's right) this is a new team. Every year the personnel is different and the teams they face are different and there are new challenges to overcome.

I agree and believe Rodgers is playing like garbage and is a part of the problem and a huge part of the solution. What I don't believe is that McCarthy can be part of the solution. The combo of McCarthy and Rodgers has expired. If the last 17 games haven't shown you that, maybe nothing will. What will it take for the stubborn fans to realize changes have to happen in the NFL to keep up with the evolution of the game and if those changes can't made made in house, it's probably time to change the regime... how long must this trend and spiral downward continue before the holdouts in Packer nation realize that maybe McCarthy should justifiably be on the hot seat. Dak can exploit our back up corners but HOFer Rodgers can't do the same to them???? Expiration date was Sunday January 19, 2014. I bet Denver fans are happy John Elway wasn't satisfied with a superbowl birth (Fox for Kubiak)....

And New England fans are probably happy Belichek doesn't just march the game plan of "this is who we are and what we do" every single week but rather exploit the opponents weakness and maximizes strengths of players on his roster. Give me an example of how McCarthy puts players in a place to succeed based on their strengths and an example of how he's attacked an opponents weaknesses. Since you'll be going back a long while I won't hold my breath. If he can't impose his will and his game plan with superior talent and execution he is lost and can't adjust.

This game was a disaster from the get-go. The defense looked nervous at the opening snap. CM3 was back to his old habits of getting sucked in. They were back on their heels the whole game. I really can't say anything good about the defense on any level yesterday. Gunter falling while trying to turn in coverage sums up the defense yesterday. Other than Burnett, the whole defense needs to be ashamed of that performance.

#12 needs to take a hard look in the mirror and ask himself if he still wants to play, and if he is still willing to pay the price of playing to be the best. The guy who was arguably the best QB in the NFL two years ago is still there. It just may not be who he wants to be anymore. Right now, he reminds me of Jay Cutler. He used to remind me of Steve Young.

I made the point that Adams was the wrong pick in 5/2014. I made a point that Adams sucked and would wreck A-rod. He Has. The truth is, if MM believes Adams is his answer he will get Fired. THE fix is this. A-rod now has to throw every-down! Period. Throw every-down! Give him every-down to throw. No running, no game management. Throw every-down. That way the Wrs can drop as many passes as they want. He will change back to a-rod. He'll accept a WR will drop the ball. The pressure is on the offensive line. And if MM and TT can't see they have the right WRs, replace them. If A-rod gets sacked he'll throw it faster. Something has to give with A-rod and his control. Drew Bres is what he must become. Throw the ball. The offense has to go back to the Attack.

I agree in part although I think there is real good talent all over this roster. All those small mental break downs that showed here and there over the course of McCarthy's tenure are coaching issues. They are certainly exposed without #12 being flawless. Now that Rodgers is playing poorly Mashed Potato Mike's approach of "this is who we are and what we do" is going to continue to tailspin.

I am wondering if it has finally sunk in that just because you play for GB does not mean your are entitled to win.

Time for a serious players only meeting. It doesn't matter what the game plan is, the players are the ones responsible for executing it and so far, they aren't.

I believe we are witnessing the great flaw with the Draft and Develop philosophy, Lack of depth and experience when injuries hit. We have 10 rookies on the 53 man roster right now. Thats nearly 20% of your active roster. And you have 8 guys in year 2. That's nearly a third of your team being barely out of diapers. When this happens year after year, your level of experience and leadership remains low consistantly and it makes a huge difference.

Also, when you focus such a large portion of your money on a single player, that player is expected (needs) to produce at a higher level than everyone else. The entire team is predicated on that concept. When that one players production goes down, it has a much greater effect on the team than for a team that more evenly balances it's talent pool.

Lots of issues here. All correctable. But I believe this team has slid fully into a second tier team. We have stagnated in our strategies and failed to move forward with the rest of the top tier teams. We have talent and CAN turn this around. The $64 question is, 'Will They?'

We saw Favre fall into bad habits during the latter part of the Sherman years, but a fresh start with a new coach in Minnesota got him rejuvenated. I think it's just time for a fresh start.

I'd love to get Jon Gruden out of the booth. As a former Packers assistant, I wonder if he would be tempted to take the head coaching job, if it were to become available.

It would be a 'fun' team to watch if Gruden returned.---He has a personality and an honest character.

Question of the Day: ----- When is MM trying to con the fans?

Answer:------- When his lips are moving.

Takeaway? The run D is average. I knew the O and pass D were bad before yesterday but I was hoping the run D would be top-10, anyway. The front 7 looks undersized next to a big, physical O-line.

This does not look like a playoff caiiber team. Average starting talent and no depth. All thanks to TT's draft and develop strategy.

I think the team could be on the verge of tanking - not quitting but not having the spirit to recover.

Key is Rodgers.

Here's what I think is wrong. Rodgers is in the deep frustration zone. On the personal level he doesn't want to look bad but on the team level I think he has had enough of poor talent, weak coaching and same old same old. He can't save this team so why even try.

What about talent:
Receivers
Tight Ends
Running Backs
Punter
Defensive Backs

What about player leadership:
Kuhn gone.
Stitton gone.

What about coaching:
Too many screw ups to list here.
Lack of creativity on offense.
Too much reliance on scheme on defense
Keeping poor performers too long.

What about General Manager:
Too conservative in getting talent.
Too much emphasis on finding that surprise player.
He's a D-lineman but we can make him a backer.
Keeping poor performers too long.

For me personally this is no fun any more. If the team doesn't finish well things could get really messy and messy can take multiple seasons to fix.

If you think I'm too pessimistic, just take a look at everything that has happened since the loss to the Chiefs in 2011. Steady downward trend. One of the best quarterbacks is about to crash.

Could not have said it any better. "He's a D-Lineman but we can make him a backer." LOL.. I swear that TT and MM believe they are much smarter than everyone else in the lg. Just as the case with yesterdays blasphemous mistake in only having 1 RB and thinking you can turn a WR into 1. As well as thinking he outsmarts the lg with his specific target of 5'11" CB with avg speed as well as rarely drafting speedy ppl on either side of the ball... Just as with Dom Capers who could never utilize our players strengths. Never allowed Nick Perry to play with his hand down or Datone Jones. Rarely plays in the base 3-4 D.

Razor I think you are considering 2014 NFCCG as downward trend from KC loss? Or divisional round as downward from one and gone 2011, 2012 and 2013? Hmmm... I must missing something...
So, you basicly saying that Aaron Rodgers performs bad because he is not satisfied with his surrounding coaches and players? I'm OK with that if he also refuses to take paycheck while he is "protesting"! If he receives pay checks, he should do his best to justify the money he is receiving... If he is not satisfy with that, I think he should tell that clearly to TT and renegotiated his contract or part away with the team...
And, lets talk about "talent" he is showing now? QB talent! You missed that one. I think Dak Prescott showing much more talent than Aaronm at the moment.
What about leadership? John Kuhn? Josh Sitton? I thought Aaron was leader of the offense and team, he himself claimed that to many times to overlook.
I see again Favre story - another QB diva who does not like how his working place looks like. Than change the work place, do not sabotage it!

The time has come to end the MM era. It seems MM has lost control of the team. Head coach is the leader of the team and is a major factor instilling confidence in the team. The team is playing as if they have no confidence or direction. AR looks lost and I believe he's playing as if he is second guessing whatever the game plan is. The team is playing poorly and it maybe their fault, but in sports when the team sucks it is the coach that takes the hit. This not a case of change for the sake of change,
it's case of change is necessary.

Change of gears. Since no one is going to fire a coach or let go of a GM while we have a winning record let's discuss a few take aways that are "good":
1) Abby, Janis, and Monty all saw playing time at receiver.
2) Oline looks great still. We can still ride the Oline when the season turns cold. Even if Rodgers isn't Rodgers. Assuming Jackson is activated.
3) Defense still has the potential to be top ten material when we get some guys back.
4) There is still a good chance Rodgers will become the good Rodgers. Examples: Matt Ryan became good again. Rivers had a really bad slump and he's good again. Brady had four bad games and then won a Superbowl after fans wanted him benched. Romo became good again before he turned into a voodoo doll.
5) Our Rookies are getting alot of reps and for the most part I like what I see for the future there.
6) The "big five" made its way into the playbook.
7) Davis had a sweet return
8) It's bears week and we can at least be happy by Friday.

"1) Abby, Janis, and Monty all saw playing time at receiver."

I was happy to see the 5 WR set return. I really liked Montgomery in the backfield. Especially how they had him running routes from the backfield.

I think this is something they can expand upon.

"4) There is still a good chance Rodgers will become the good Rodgers. Examples: "

Another example. I think 2 years ago Tom Brady played horrible early in the season and fans were calling for Jimmy Girappalo. Then he turned it on and took them to the Super Bowl?

True but I'm led to believe that may not have happened if Starks wasn't out and they only had a gimpy Lacy and Adams wouldn't have gotten hurt

You could limit yourself to just watching interviews of MM and the players. All happy talk there. Or you could also read packers.com: all happy stuff there.

One problem with McCarthy: teams don't fire playoff coaches. Look at Marv Lewis. Been in Cincinnati since 2003. Gets bounced from the first round of the playoffs every year, but he's still there.

The Packer offense can't even run a simple screen pass, it always looks like a Chinese Fire Drill! It's time for a change in coaching start with the OC!

Perhaps Rodgers need to stop relaxing and put in some work with the offense. I'm not saying he is no longer a good qb, but it still looks like he hasn't recovered from not playing in preseason.

As for the coaching, we have a head coach, assistant head coach-offense and an OC and they can't come up with a new game plan or make in game adjustments. Doing the same thing over and over and hoping for different results is... insane.

I think Rodgers has changed since he went "Hollywood". His significant other does an 80/20 diet, 80% fruits and 20% "whatever", or so she says. We already know he gave up cheese, a fine source of needed protein, especially for an athlete.
Protein builds muscle and the best source of protein comes from animal protein, according to the scientists. Fad nutritionists will tell you to replace animal protein with soy products and so does the soy lobby. That's pure hogwash.
Football players need to burn loads of calories in short periods of time. That's why going out on the field having had your berries and half a banana won't cut it.
Could it be that Rodgers has changed since he went "Hollywood"?
