Packers Question of the day - Takeaways from the loss

The Packers fell on Sunday to the visiting Colts, 31-26.

Of course, this is the last thing you want to wake up on a Monday morning to relive, but what were your takeaweays from the game and what are you expecting moving forward?

There is hope. If one HOPES to go 9-7 and win a pitiful NFC North again.

There is NO HOPE, if one is a fan of the Green Bay Packers and HOPES for another Super Bowl appearance in the near future.

The season isn't over... The season is half over. A lot of season left.

But they have to play better the rest of the season. Can't have many games like yesterdays game.

And where do you get your hope that MM will figure it out? Yes parts of games look good but when was the last time MM's Packer squad put together a start to finish victory?

My hope was in the previous 2 games, until yesterday. I thought they had the offense heading in the right direction until yesterdays game.

That's a great question. I honestly was expecting to see that start to finish victory.. Didn't happen.

Lose your two starting CB`s... fire MM. Lose your two running backs... Fire MM. Start a season 4-4 one game behind the division leader... Fire everybody. ugly: most posters

Simply put. I'm still just baffled at why Richard Rodgers and Justin Perillo played as much as they did and Allison and Davis didn't play hardly at all...

Rodgers had almost as many targets (10) as Davis and Allison had snaps combined (12).

Also, if Cobb isn't healthy enough to play in the first half, why was he out there in the 2nd half. And if you don't feel comfortable using Cobb, why don't the other WR's get more snaps?

McCarthy mismanaged another game. Play calling, game planning was terrible!

"Rodgers had almost as many targets (10) as Davis and Allison had snaps combined (12)."

They clearly had planned to feature Rodgers this week...which is beyond baffling. That said, I understand that the rankings bear out that Indy actually isn't too bad in coverage. Vontae Davis is a good CB, their safeties are OK. I think MM outsmarted himself and decided to attack them underneath...but why feature your weak areas when you can feature your deep areas?

I don't get why they would try to feature Rodgers. Rodgers is a below average player. He is NOT Finley. Hell he isn't Bubba Franks.

McCarthy saw that the Colts have struggled against TE's. Great. The problem is the Packers don't have the TE's until Cook comes back to take advantage of anything. He took away the play makers and stopped doing what has been working.
He tried to attack the Colts weakness (with their weakness) vs tried attacking the Colts with what was their strengths.

McCarthy deserves a ton of blame for this loss. The game plan was terrible!

It really is.

I don't get the rationale there.

You can see it was their game plan to try and feature the TE's when you look at their snap counts.
It makes no sense at all..

Mike realized his te play was lacking so he put a bunch in to take advantage of the fleet footed r rogers and the elusive Perillo. He should have put in a pas rush. What a pos game that was.

absolutely. I think the Packers have better talent at WR, but the Patriots have far superior talent at TE. And 2 TEs who can play are much more important than 7 WRs...

How can we compare NE & GB's TE/RB personnel?

NE has a free agent starting at RB in Blount. It will get Deion Lewis, another free agent, back at RB soon.

At TE, they supplement Gronk with Martellus Bennett, whom they traded for this past offseason.

In GB, we don't sign free agents unless we absolutely have to and the only trade in 7 years was for the immortal Knile Davis.

Actually, this comparison was quite enlightening as it shows just how different NE's GM builds his roster from the way TT does it.

Of course, in TT we must always trust.

To be fairer.

During the past 5 years, NE has been to 5 AFC Championship games & 2 SBs (1 SB win) whereas GB has been to a single NFC Championship game and ZERO Super Bowls.

Oh, and NE is 7-1 while NE is 4-4 this year.

God forbid anyone ever hold Thompson partly responsible , I mean they are HIS draft picks and UDFA. Thompson has rode Rodgers coat tails for years, problem now is Rodgers can no longer do it all by himself, not like he used to. Not only that, he's picked up some bad habits the last 1 1/2 years which McCarthy clearly isn't addressing.

Lastly look around at all of Ted Thompsons protegees. McKinzie, Schneider, even Dorsey though he's closest don't use the Thompson formula of building a team. Personally I find that pretty interesting. Every one of those teams has used the draft, but they've also added some very key pieces along the way. Reggie Mac should win NFL Executive of the year IMO, and the Raiders are just starting

Actually, I think the exact quote you're looking for is, "If it's fixed, we should overthink, overscheme, watch video, work on pad level, bitch about execution, trade for an RB and then cut him an hour later, promote a RB from the practice squad and don't use him, put our WRs at RB, game plan around using the slowest TE in the league as our break out guy, lament the fact that the squirrel was more open than our receivers, and THEN break it."

Completely understandable typo.

To be fair dobber, it didn't take Reggie that long at all. He had twice the mess Thompson did in Green Bay when he took over the Raiders. He started in January of 2012 with them 3 months after Al Davis passed.

In his first 4 years from 2012 through 2015 he had over $107 MILLION in Dead Cap Space to clean up WHILE trying to put some kind of product on the field. He finally got a QB in 2015 and look at them in 2016. They're young, and have "Studs on every level of this team. Most of the were drafted too, but he's added some excellent pieces to get them where they are today.

And terrible game planning by MM to not use what works (ie the short passing game)

Injuries my ass! The colts were more injured than the Packers and were better prepared. I'm sick of the injury excuses. Everyone is injured in the NFL at this point but not everyone has the depth that Green Bay does, whats hurting them is Mashed Potato Mike's stale game plans and his inability to exploit opposing team's weaknesses (Colts Oline-Dallas secondary, etc etc)). He is just clunking around trying to fit square pegs into round holes (ie Rich Rod is not FInley) while staying the course with little to no consistency. What happened since the Bears game??? Where was that offense vs this crappy colts defense? Mashed Potato Mike decides to feature Don Jackson, Richard Rodgers and Justin Perillo!!! Great game plan, Tater!! Enough with the injury bullcrap excuses. They were more injured on offense last week and looked way better than yesterday ...

I submit why is he trying to fit square pegs in round holes? Featuring Don Jackson (w/o Lacy and Starks) and Rich Rod and Perillo (no Jared Cook). They planned the RB and TE positions so poorly, injuries are throwing a wrench into everything. TT should've drafted another RB and TE, not a WR. MM is clueless how to respond to it. They are playing the hand they are dealt, and are not as deep as you think they are. Every team has 53 players and a practice squad.

Unfortunately the 2016 NFL is Tagliabue/Goodell wet dream. 9-7/10-6 will probably win the NFC N & W and the AFC N & S with none of the 4 Div. winners doing much in the playoffs. Going forward, who knows, 31 and 26 pts should have been enough to get 2 wins. The reality of it is the Packers along with 24 other teams are mediocre/bad. With that comes 5 or 6 really average teams will storm into the playoffs, save HC's and GM's jobs and give the fans a watered down product. Wonder why rating are dropping like a lead balloon?

Yeah, parity is the problem, except for the fact that it has been universally recognized as the most important driver of the NFL's rise to supremacy.

The average, casual fan cares about wins, not dynasties. Listen to all the idiots talking about Cleveland possibly going 0-16. They're playing to the average fan who doesn't recognize that Cleveland is obviously improving (and plays interesting football). Parity gives hope to the average fan that really doesn't care how the team "looks" winning 8 or 9 games.

I never claimed it was a problem other that dropping ratings. If you are so sure about the "average, casual fan" why are they not watching the games. Answer- watered down, mediocre and a lot of times down right bad football. It is the new NFL. Every weekend ratings drop, 4 win teams still pine for the playoffs, League makes Billion $$$$$ and the not average fan that built the league is the loser.

Then you'll need to explain how the same parity that built the ratings to mega heights is now suddenly responsible for the ratings decline. Answer- you can't, because it is illogical to believe that.

Once again the word parity is only used by you not me. Parity is not the same as watered down and mediocre. Parity only applies to the salary cap and the draft. Obviously you are a sheep that sucks up the drool the league and this organization is pedaling.

Just to be clear, your original post began with a reference to Tagliabue's/Goodell's desire for a lot of 8-8; 7-9; 9-7 teams. That Is parity.

In order to accept your revised point, we would have to believe that those commissioners desired, and actively worked for, a "watered down and mediocre" product. That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The complaint for the last 10 yrs has been 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 teams making the playoffs over an 11-5/10-6 team. Watered down & mediocre. If the league truly wanted the best 12 teams every year it could be structured to do so. Oh I forgot, we are in the generation where everybody gets a participation trophy. Keep slopping it up WKU.

1. "These prima donna players make way to much money".
2. "The game was much, much better when we didn't worry about player safety and concussions. These modern players are p***sies".
3. "No welfare for billionaires!! Owners should pay for their own stadiums". (With absolutely no understanding that some owners, e.g. Mark Davis, lack the necessary net worth to finance a stadium).
4. "The moon landing was a hoax. Capricorn One is real!".

You would think that our game against Atlanta gave us insights going forward. And, while I realize that guys 'have to' make plays, the plan needed to change based on our depleted troops. Going back to the two TE sets and slowing down the personnel hasn't worked, didn't work and probably won't work next weekend.

The Packers have enough tools, it is a question of using those tools. We've got a great opportunity to invent a quick and versatile offense but we need to move forward with our thinking. You'd think that having 3 offensive coordinators, we would have figured it out.

Completely agree...

The 2 TE sets does not work if your TE's are slow, can't gain separation and can't block.

They have enough players that they can be productive. They just aren't using them.

The last couple of weeks our offense was strictly around the WR's, and our offense has been probably the best its been in a couple of years. This week, they went back to the old stuff and it didn't work.

So isnt the crux of all this anst we pack fans have is ted t is not the genius drafter people thought. Gunther, rollins and randle had injury prone issues and were passed on. Why do we have two, not one but two slow footed and over weight te's. I see these big fast down the middle guys eating up yardage and our fat ass te has a guy on his back knocking the away. Ted got us this guy.
All the injuries. Figured that out years ago. Ted does not take past injuries into account so we get stuck with injuries galore.
Abby had serios concussions in college and missed a lot of games. So we take him thinking oh he will be fine under nfl guidance .Not. Blame ted for another wasted pick.
This is Teds show, he made this mess. There is not one team who would take Perillo, r rogers, starks, gunther, rollins, schum, ripkowski. You cant win big with these peole

I wholeheartedly agree with Jersey Al: It is mind-blowing to see long bombs on 3rd & 6 or less over and over again. Not just this game, but this has been going on for a long time. This has to stop!

Now obviously I don't know whether those are the plays which were called, or whether Rodgers is free-lancing here. Regardless, it is McCarthy's responsibility to stop this. First, if those are the plays called, then there is no discussion, simply McCarthy's fault. Second, if those were not the plays called but Rodgers audibled into those, then clearly McC has to have a one-on-one with him and tell him this is not working and has to stop. and, hate to say it, if it continues actually put a QB in who executes the plays which were called. No matter whether Hundley is the lesser QB. Instead of moving the chains, the O wastes opportunities over and over, and then the D is asked to step up again, sometimes after a very short period of time and can hardly catch their breaths...

The Packers O had the ball 11 times. It's simply irresponsible to waste 3 or 4 of those possessions with those long bombs and a low percentage completion rate... The most egregious drive was in Q2, when one possession was completely wasted with 3 long bombs. 2 terrible passes, and the 1 bad drop by Janis. At the time the Packers were down 7 points. Had they scored at least a FG, then the complexion of this game might have been different. But instead, the Packers O just ran 3 plays for a grand total of 20 seconds before the D has to step on the field again...

Rogers likes long bombs.
Just think 14 play 80 yard drives increase the chances for Rogers to get sacked/hurt. 4 plays punt/td/fg provide plenty of rest and safely on the sidelines.

CBA doesn't apply to GMs and Coaches. I would suggest that the potential pool of talent that applies for the GM and coaching positions would be pitiful if the terms of employment included short term, low base pay, incentive-based position available. Even commission based salespeople like to have a draw.

special teams you could say lost the game for the Packers. One of many reasons why they lost it. It definitely hurt them.

Opening kickoff Colts score 7 points.
Packers miss FG.
Colts return another kickoff to the Packers 45. (Colts have 8 plays for 35 yards and kick a FG).

Colts have 10 points essentially from Special teams and Packers lose 3.

Injury is always a good excuse but I don't buy it.
For the past 5 years I think the overall quality of our players as decreased significantly.
The defense (despite 2 INTs) is below average, our pass defense is beyond pathetic, same for our third down defense, etc...
As to our offense: 12 used to mask a lot of our deficiencies but now he needs help. And I think MM is not helping with the play call/gameplan.
If they can score in desperation mode, then they should play like that in every down.

How come when I watch other games, players look really fast and are flying around the field, but whenever the Packers play the action looks slow and they plod around? It is not just them, but their opponents always look slow too. Is it the track?

Oakland and Denver last night was like watching the Packers on FF. If we were just a slow team, the opponents would be noticeably faster, but they aren't. What in the wide wide world of sports is going on out there?

Lets see right off the top of my head, no fulltime refs, 8 divisions, player eligibility rule. You are extremely hard to take seriously when you have the take of "The only "prevent mode" you're aware of is females preventing you from touching them" Stick to your thought out comments. The above makes you look like you live under a bridge.

Again, those items have nothing to do with commissioners wanting a bunch of 9/7 - 10-6 teams in the playoffs, which was your original point. By the way, I agree that there should be full time referees and that rosters should be expanded. Perhaps this disagreement has become a matter of semantics. Honestly, I'm having difficulty discerning what type of NFL you're looking for.

With respect to snarkiness, someone who begins their original post with a "wet dream" reference really shouldn't be throwing stones. In fact, I wouldn't even have replied to your post but for that distasteful nugget. Sexual references such as that are vulgar, they detract from the conversation.

My post you questioned was responding to referring to prevent defenses without any clue as to what those types of alignments are supposed to accomplish. In retrospect, I could have been less harsh. Unfortunately, there are some real meatheads who only understand severe comments. However, if I'm going to criticize you for sexual references I should refrain from them also.

I don't think we need to expand the roster beyond 53, but what the NFL does need to do has much the same effect. The IR and PUP rules are insane, or at least stupid. The NFL should have a one game, 2 game, etc. injury designation with the freedom to promote players from the PS to replace those players on the short term injury list.

I am not against parity, which I think is actually good. I am against having a lousy product on the field. I don't mean that one team isn't better than the other, but both should be crisp. The change in the injury list rules would result in better players being on the field more often.

Hey, WKU, I thought you'd gone on a self-imposed sabbatical (or that we'd fired you)? I was going to respond to your post about booing, but my thoughts on the subject became tangled in my own mind. I think booing is something to be avoided, but then I also arrogate to myself the right to boo in some instances. I grant to myself the right to boo Ed Cedar, the Brewers 3rd base coach, on the basis of being the worst 3rd base coach in the history of baseball. I granted myself the right to boo Tim Thomas, the 6'11" forward for the Milwaukee Bucks back in the day, who was supposed to be (and was fully capable of being) a shot-blocking rebounder who could shoot and drive to the basket. After he got his fully guaranteed, big contract, Mr. Thomas decided never to step foot into the paint again. I wouldn't boo Barclay even if he is dominated by another player because I think he gives it his all. My thoughts are still tangled, though.

Hey tgr! I was going to impose a sabbatical, but I lack self control (obviously) when all this stuff fires up. Now being a couple of days removed from everything, my sense of "hey, it's not my business what someone else does" takes over.

Personally, I would never boo the Packers . The team means that much to me (which also violates my sense of "I really shouldn't care this much about this"). That meaning leads me to not like the Packers being portrayed in what I perceive to be a negative light. I also believe (without knowing them personally obviously) that TT and MM are good people. That belief really causes me to be way too upset about the "Mashed Potato Mike" and "Albino" comments.

In the end, I support your right to boo the 3rd base coach and Tim Thomas. As an NBA fan, I would love to see the Bucks return to playing well. I was big 76ers fan during the Dr. J era, and clearly recall the playoff game where the Bucks prevented Moses Malone's 4-4-4 prediction. I still have the newspaper with the picture of Dr. J and Moses holding the trophy. I also recall that at that time of my early 20's my friends and I declared that Dr. J and Jerry "The King" Lawler were our most beloved sports figures.

I've said before, if change is needed at either or both of the Packers HC or GM positions, so be it. I would prefer that any transition be conducted with the class I believe befits the organization.

I am still tangled about booing. You mention Malone and Dr. J, but I personally thought that Maurice Cheeks killed us every year. He was a guy perfectly willing to take (and make) the 18 footer at crunch time. Yes, the Bucks had to concentrate on stopping Malone and Dr. J but too often even if we stopped them Cheeks would insert the needle and often the dagger into our chances. BTW - the current NBA doesn't remind me much of the 1984 version, which is why I stopped watching the NBA.

I have noticed that in the games where the offense has been successful AR has had a good day running. Last game was back to the same old, no quick hitters just the ol school yard scramble chuck it deep,

My takeaway is a team that needs a regime change at the end of the season. I agree MM has a very good record and I am sure he would land on his feet elsewhere but 99% of coaches in professional sports are hired and get let go at some point. I think the team could use a new voice.

Long bombs on 3rd and 6, but not 2nd and 1. Mind boggling. Talk about out smarting yourself.

The Packers need to move on from Jeff Janis. No amount of size and speed can make up for hands of stone. Give those reps to Davis.

Gunter gave up a lot of yards yesterday. I hope he can be better in the future. My gut is that he would be o.k. jamming at the line, but that he won't ever be good in the zone.

Mr. Schrum had a fantastic day. It was warm. There was no wind to speak of.

I'm not quite ready to boot MM, but I understand the sentiment. If you are going to even think about changing up the head coach then the man picking him should be the next GM, so that he is invested in his guy. In other words, it is time to send MM a signal by TT retiring and turning over the reigns to the young Wolf in December. That will instantly put everyone on notice that a major shake-up is on the table, because Wolf will not put his future on the line to preserve the status quo.

My takeaway from the Colts game is that we lost this game due to poor ST play, specifically KO coverage,
an ineffective pass rush against a very good if not great QB. Defense unable to step up and make stops when they are needed most, best example, Colts are pinned at there own 5 with a 3rd and nine and what happens? Luck drops back goes through his progressions and hits an open receiver over the middle (of course) for 14 yards and a first down. The defense unable to get off the field as usual allows a 96 yard drive and the Colts run out the first half clock (5+ minutes) and score a TD. Fast forward to end of 4Q when Colts start at their own 25 after a touchback, what happens on 3rd and 2? Luck drops back, finds a receiver open over the middle (again) for a first down and the ballgame is over as the defense never gets off the field again (3+ minutes runoff). No "all talk no action" Daniels, no Perry, no Peppers and no one makes a play or even seems to give a damn. Moving to the offense we play Perillo, RRodgers and Janis. Perillo and Rodgers can't run and Janis can't catch add to the fact that we don't have any RBs so why are we playing 2TEs and a WR who can't contribute. Why aren't we playing T. Davis and G. Allison instead of Janis and Perillo, I don't know 3rd base! Great offensive plan there MM. Monty makes some nice gains as a RB but our opponents know that he can't beat them as a part time RB. They focus on the pass because our WRs, specifically Adams and Jordy can't get separation. A. Rodgers is still throwing to Jordy like it's 2014, but it's not and Jordy can't make those plays for now and maybe never will again. It's sad because we are wasting some really fine OL play. Underlying these reasons on the field is poor coaching, planning and preparation. No meaningful post-game comment from MM as usual, he knows his team was just embarrassed on their home field. What I would like to see happen, since we still have half a season to play and possibly make a run if we get our injured players back, is for A. Rodgers to call a team meeting and say, "look guys we're better than this and we need to start playing like we're capable of playing starting with me" and go from there. Rodgers needs to take some responsibility at least for the offense, show some leadership and put this team on his back for the second half of the season. As for MM he needs to show some of the resilience that he has shown in the past when facing adversity and put his best offensive players on the field. That means get the ball to Monty more often and Cobb when he's healthy. He needs to get more snaps for T. Davis and Allison as well. Put the ball in the hands of your best players. Hopefully Cook is back as well soon. If you must lose, lose with your best players on the field. On defense, get an attitude adjustment, hit some people and make some plays. These QBs can read the NY Sunday Times with all the time we're giving them. Where is Capers the great defensive genius as generating pressure and disguising his defense. Hey DC, still not happening after 5 seasons. Strategically, 3 things, Leadership, Resilience, Attitude. This team has some players, it's time for them to show up and play while we can still salvage the season. Coaches get it done. No excuses. Thanks, Since '61

Full confession - I'm upset. I'm disappointed with losing, but I'm upset with the reaction of a small sector of fans. These people have created enough noise that PFT's lead headline earlier today was about MM being on the "hot seat". That is flat out embarrassing. The most storied franchise should never be portrayed the same way as Minnesota, Jacksonville, etc. Also, "fans" booing at the game should not be allowed back. It is absolutely classless. There are plenty of people who would love to have those seats and would enjoy the game regardless of the perceived quality of the Packers performance.

Please understand, I am in no way referring to the legitimate concerns raised by sincere and intelligent posters like Bearmeat, tgr, Nick Perry, Since61, dobber, Oppy, zeke, and MarkinMadison. But you unreasonable idiots (you know who you are), you are embarrassments to Packers fans and yourselves.

Many of us 'idiots' voicing frustration on this board is more embarassing than how the team performed yesterday?

PFT had MM on the hot seat last season. It doesn't need us to point out the obvious.

Most of us are probably extremely loyal fans. Everyone understands losses. What we don't understand is lack of energy (if MM and AR say it, do you need more proof?) and game planning that defies logic (I don't think there was a single defender of MM's performance).

I've been a fan since the late 60's. So I missed Starr and painfully waited until Favre came along. I was not against management for pushing him out. I wasn't happy about the whole thing but clearly AR was ready. It just seems that we fans are being taken for granted now.

I'm with you Pacman. I go back a little further to Starr who was my hero, but then the bottom fell out. So I can appreciate how fortunate we are at QB, and can not easily accept what's going on now with this team. I will continue to voice what I see and feel, because I love this team. To that end the coaching has to change, its no longer a question of if but when.

That is a much more reasonable post than "stats are for losers". It's not about voicing frustration, it's about how the frustration is voiced. Loyal fans respect and protect the Packers image while reasonably debating the issues.

Regarding MM: I appreciate his role in providing almost a decade of winning teams, and being a decent human being during that time. For example, MM's refusal to publicly shame Eddie about his weight during last season speaks volumes to his class.

If change is needed, so be it. Let's just hope it occurs in a manner befitting the good name of the Packers.

You're upset about a cliche like that?

It comes down to ONE thing that EVERYBODY saw - even the announcers of the game. We all know it. The Packers excused all offensive woes since last year Jordy's injury and on WR's not getting separation. We saw a couple games where MM/AR changed the game plan with short quick passes. And it worked great - even with 1 loss. This board was thrilled and almost willing to forgive MM for not doing it sooner. Then the Colts game where they revert back to plays that haven't worked for over a year. NOBODY can explain that. So if that isn't stubborn, stupid coaching, planning, whatever you want to call it - what is? So somebody deserves to be responsible for that. If MM/AR want to find their identity and lose the game rather than take what they can get, they do not deserve to be in the high paying, unique, star positions that they are in.

It's not embarrassing that there is an article about MM being in the hot seat. What is embarrassing is the Packers play for the past year. MM is not immune to being blamed just because he's the HC of the Packers. We're going on a year plus of wheel spinning with no answers. Sports talk is 24/7 and there is always a story to be had. They'll spin stories or create stories where there is none in order to fill time or space. In this case I can see why this story was written. If this was one or two bad games I'd agree with you but MM is failing to get this team in favorable positions to win football games consistently now. His lack of creativity, stubbornness, and inability to adjust is of great concern. This team is in complete disarray. Problems in each facet of the game stack up high. The buck stops with him as the leader of the Pack. He isn't providing answers after a long sustained slump and in that case his seat should be getting pretty hot.

As for Booing I'm of the mindset that if I pay hundreds of dollars to buy a ticket and travel to the game and the result is the pathetic effort of yesterday I should be allowed to let 'em hear about it. It's the only way I can voice my displeasure. Much like people turn to SM to complain about poor service at restaurants or stores, fans boo for much the same reason. I fail to see the issue in doing that. I draw the line at throwing objects at them or using vulgar gestures (etc). Booing gets my point across in a harmless way.

The PFT headline is embarrassing because the Packers are a class organization. The issue isn't about MM's merits to remain as the coach, it's about how the organization is portrayed. The national idiots pick up on the vibe of the minority and plaster it all over the media. Just because "hot takery" (which I mostly love) occurs 24/7 doesn't mean that the Packers have to be involved. These things should be taken care of behind closed doors.

Booing isn't the only way to voice your displeasure, you're doing it right here! Simply not cheering at the game sends the same, perhaps an even more powerful, message, without the spectacle being played for the commentators to note it during the broadcast. Paying hundreds of dollars doesn't buy a pass to behave boorishly.

The PFT headline and its "hot takery" is in direct response to the AR presser after the game not people posting their frustration on CheeseheadTV or other outlets. The national idiots are feeding off AR calling out teammates and coaches for the uninspired showing Sunday afternoon. The Delorean time machine unfortunately does not exist to take us back to the 60's when things were (and rightfully so) taken care of behind closed doors.

So because the Packers are a class organization they can't have an article written about the poor performance of Mike McCarthy? There are people including sports reporters who fall on both sides of the camp-let the season play out vs MM has the lost the team. Depends who you talk to. An article or two about MM's inability to snap the team out of a long sustained funk isn't that big of a deal nor does it reflect on the organization. It was bound to happen after a year plus of sub standard performance from the team he leads. The media isn't just going to ignore those facts because it is the Packers.

As a fan who pays money to attend a game I feel it is my right to boo if I feel it's warranted. I don't see the big deal. If you go and don't want to boo and would rather cheer after a game like Sunday that's your right too.

No clue, Croat. I will tell you a secret though: I had never heard of or knew next to nothing about Infante, Holmgren, Rhodes, Sherman, and McCarthy. I did know something about Dan Devine, Bart Starr and Forrest Gregg. Devine and Gregg particularly (because he had had success as a head coach in the NFL) appeared to be a perfectly fine choices based on prior coaching experience. I don't expect to know or possibly even recognize the name of the coach who replaces MM, regardless of whether that happens soon or in another decade.

I don't think someone's opinion if they're not in the NFL business is worth a whole lot, frankly.

Thaks for your honest answer. I expected no less from you. But this is question for people who wants to fire Mike McCarthy. I agree that sometimes MM doing mistakes, that he knows how to be stubborn (sometimes not for good decision), but after all, I think lot of people underestimate him.
I agree with you that our conclusions are mostly guessing as we do n ot know what play Packers are calling, or changing, or whatsoever. Also, we do not know state of mind or possible injuries all of players who are involved in one game, so it is difficult to make judgements on some portion of hteir jobs, from which we see just games...
With players is little easier. As their responsibility is little less complicated...

Croat - If MM were to be fired which I do not expect to happen unless the Packers tank the rest of the season, which I also doubt, I for one have no idea who the Packers should hire. I'm confident that TT has a list of possible candidates but that list will change at the end of the season when other coaches become available. Calling to fire MM at this point is not the answer. For now MM needs to rally this team and get them back on track while there is time to salvage this season. He has done it before in 2010 for the SB run and in 2013 after the Thanksgiving debacle in Detroit (both injury plagued seasons like this one). One of the reasons I respect MM is for his resilience in the face of adversity. If he responds again he stays, if not, well it may be tome for a change, but I am not in a position to suggest a replacement that I would feel confident about. Thanks, Since '61

Sorry, WKU. Devine was okay as a coach: his record was 25-27 IIRC. I think he even won an award one year. The disaster was his GMing, especially when he made the infamous trade for a QB. Kind of like Sherman.

Croat - the most likely replacement for MM (after this season or 5 seasons from now) is a coordinator from another team, followed by a college coach (perhaps with NFL experience) or an out of work former NFL HC. Hiring a new HC who is not strictly an interim HC mid-season means that none of the NFL coordinators out there would be able to accept the job, and most college coaches couldn't leave, meaning the pool of possible candidates is very small at present. I am for taking a wait and see approach to MM's future.

If Crosby would have done his job and kicked the ball deep into the end zone, their wouldn't have been a return for a TD. Whitehead would still be on the team. Kerridge would still be on the PS. Crosby didn't have his best game. Missed a FG too. Whitehead gets the short end of the stick. That's the way it goes. Maybe if he clears waivers, they can put him back on the PS.

Some takeaways:

1. This is the Packers now. This is no longer a bad stretch; it's reality. It's also not as simple as pinning all our troubles on injuries. The problems run way deeper then that despite what Rodgers likes to try and spin to the media. We're 4-4 and we look like it. I don't think this is performing below expectations anymore. I think sadly this is just the Packers now.

2. I'm starting to believe Mike McCarthy benefited from a great group of assistant coaches who collectively contributed to the offense's success. I now sincerely doubt MM was the mastermind as he was often credited with. As each assistant left or changed positions the offense started to crumble a little more and it seemed less and less likely that MM was the true guru.

3. Too many lingering issues that never get cleaned up is frustrating beyond belief. The players/coaches need to stop saying things will get corrected or fixed because we're going on a year plus of the same problems and same parroted talk. It's not getting fixed or cleaned up. Obviously the coaches have no answer and that's a big concern.

4. There is no leader on this team. There is no Charles Woodson to rally the troops or get the players to buy in and focus.

5. We have a bad combo right now of missing too much on draft selections with coaches who can't build and develop later round players. If you look back at the last 5 drafts it's eye popping how so many are nothing more than barely serviceable role fillers and/or are long gone. We've focused alot on the defense the last 5 drafts and what is there to show for that? Are we that much better then we were 5 years ago? I can't say that we are.

What's the answer? I'm not sure. But I do believe Mike McCarthy has lost this team so it starts there.

Totally agree.
Mediocre drafts and coaching in consecutive years.

My takeaway from Sunday's embarrassment?
Well, I guess my take is that Coach Mike McPuffy is a lot like Jimmy Swaggert.
He's found a way to get 70,000 people in Lambeau Field to simultaneously jump to their feet and yell "Jesus Christ"!
F.A.T. , Fire Albino Ted!
And send McPuffy packin' with him!

With Bellichick coaching this team, theyd be somewhere between 8-0 and 6-2 even with injuries. That tells me its squarely on McCarthy. Not only for his bad game planning or his inept personnel use, but also for not being able to harness or reign in Rodgers. He should be canned immediately if we dont make the playoffs and probably should be anyway if we fall short of the NFC championship game. And then Rodgers is next depending on whether or not he shapes up. 12's delusion about his own play is thick right now. That bomb he threw to Janis was like the 2nd deep ball hes connected on all year, thats simply pathetic, and he has receivers open on crossers all over the field and he just doesnt throw it or misses the read. Mind-boggling. That said, its Mccarthys job to discipline him and get him on track and he's no where close to accomplishing that.

I would never like to see that low human creature as HC or any coach of Packers team. He is not at the level of organization, so he can not be a part of the one.

I hope you mean Jim Harbaugh and not John. :-)

OK. I would like to put another name for your opinion here. If Packers will change the coach, they will lost additional 2 to 3 years. I suggest try to bring back Nick Saban to Green Bay and give him 3 years to make the team by his image. I surely think that is much better solution than Harbaugh...

I would think that Saban has such a good gig at Alabama, the weather is better, and the fact he failed with the Miami Dolphins would be reason enough not to leave there. In the NFL he doesn't have 100+ players to work from, many of the blue chippers from across the country.

You think Harbaugh is beneath the Packers? Get over yourself dude. It's that kind of self rightgeous attitude that this team needs to shed. You are one of those spoiled fans that feeds into it

johngalt, did I say Harbaugh was beneath the Packers? I just asked Jim or John. I think Jim is the better coach of the two brothers. Beneath the Packers? No. Not either one of them.

I don't have a self righteous attitude. I am not a spoiled fan either. I have been a fan since 1963. I've been through all the highs and lows of this franchise since then. Seen the best and the worst. I want to see them have success LIKE ANY OTHER PACKER FAN. I'm not one of those fans that only are around when they are winning. Then abandon them when they start losing.

I think Harbaugh's show plays better in college than in the pros. Certainly his limited sample size showed he wore out his welcome in SF...enough so that they let him go while the team was still near it's peak.
