Packers Snap Counts V. Minnesota: Week 17, 2023

Packers power past Minnesota to take aim at a playoff spot.

The Packers signed safety safety Benny Sapp to the 53-man roster, filling the available spot opened by putting Eric Stokes on IR.  They elevated WR Bo Melton from the practice squad.  The inactive players due to injury were Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, and ILB Devondre Campbell.  The healthy scratches were Brenton Cox and Caleb Jones.

The offensive line was very good all night.  The Packers averaged 4.5-yards per carry and 177 rushing yards.  The Vikings only had one tackle for loss.  Jordan Love attempted 33 passes and the line only allowed 3 quarterback hits and no sacks.  The offense had 470 net yards on 73 plays.  The Packers had the ball for 37:22 minutes to 22:28 for Minnesota.  The Vikings had some success when they moved Danielle Hunter inside to work against Myers ann.d Runyan.

This offense looks so good with Aaron Jones as a bell cow running back.  Jones had 120 rushing yard on 20 carries (6.0/carry).  The line opened holes for him but he also found small creases when necessary.  Jones makes the cuts and takes the angles that lead to daylight and allows him to run through contact.  Jones caught his only target for 10 yards.   Dillon gained 27 tough yards on 7 carries, a 3.9 yard average.  Taylor gained 30 yards on 8 carries, getting what was blocked.

Kraft continues to improve his blocking.  He still is a little rough against DEs and OLBs but he generally makes solid contact.  He eschews the "Deguara Roll" on cut blocks.  Kraft caught all 6 of his targets for 48 yards.  Most of his receptions come outside the numbers, limiting his yards after the catch.  Sims and Deguara mostly block.  Sims caught his only target for 6 yards.  Deguara played mostly in garbage time.

Love completed 24 of 33 attempts (72.7%) for 256 yards (7.76 yards/attempt) with 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.  His passer rating was 125.3.  Love still misses some layups but he remains poised: he threw no turnover-worthy passes.  Love played in rhythm, getting the ball out on time.  Clifford came on in garbage time.

Jaylen Reed and Bo Melton powered the passing attack.  Reed caught 6 of his 8 targets for 89 yards and 2 TDs, all in the first half.  He left the game with a chest injury, something that has kept him on the sidelines lately.  Melton also helped the Packers jump out to a 23-3 first half lead with 40 receiving yards on 2 receptions of his 4 first-half targets.  Melton would pick up the slack with Reed on the sidelines by catching 4 of 5 targets for an additional 65 yards and a touchdown in the second half.  Melton finished with 6 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.  Doubs caught 3 of 6 targets for 28 and Heath caught 1 of 2 for 13 yards.

The Packers have an embarrassment of riches at wide receiver.  I expect the Packers to sign Melton to the 53-man roster soon.  Watson, Reed, Wicks, Doubs, and Melton should be locks for the 2024 team.

Wyatt 29 55 3-12%
Slaton 17 32 9-38%
Brooks 14 26 6-25%
Wooden 10 19 5-21%

The defensive line was stout and got some push.  All of the linemen had pressures.  Wyatt had 2 assisted tackles, 2 QB hits and a half sack.  Wooden had 1 QB hit, and a half sack which was his assisted tackle.  Clark had 1 solo tackle and a pass defensed, but PFF indicated that he and Wyatt each had 4 pressures.  Minnesota has not been able to run the ball well.  The Packers played just 2.13 true defensive linemen on average and held the Vikngs to 67 rushing yards.

The linebackers had nice games.  Quay Walker had 6 tackles (1 solo), 2 QB hits and a sack.  McDuffie was having a good game until a collision with the Minnesota quarterback and some of his own teammates led to his exit with a concussion.  McDuffie had 3 tackles (1 solo), a half sack, and a pass defensed.  He was replaced by the veteran, Eric Wilson, who added 4 tackles (1 solo) of his own.

Preston Smith had a big game with 3 QB hits, 1 sack and a pass defensed and a forced fumble.  PFF assigned 4 pressures to Smith.  Rashan Gary had 3 tackles and 2 QB hits.  PFF credited Gary with 6 pressures.  The Packers combined for a whopping 14 QB hits.

It is harder to assess the defensive backs because the starter for Minnesota looked like a  4th stringer and Mullens looked only marginally better.  You can only play the team on the other side of the line of scrimmage.  Minnesota tried to pick on Ballentine, who had 3 passes defensed and an interception, but without success.  Nixon led the Packers with 11 tackles including a half sack, a pass defensed and a tackle for loss.  Rudy Ford seems to still be in the doghouse.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Carlson missed another extra point and Whelan shanked a punt (though it worked out well enough).  The Packers gave up a 47-yard kickoff return.  Toure muffed a punt which Minnesota recovered.  That led directly to Minnesota’s only TD as the Vikings were able to gain 7 yards on two plays for the score.

Happy New Year!
An all-in-all good game, but don't be fooled.
The guy NBC kept showing in the booth dressed as Joe Barry was an imposter trying to save Barry's job.
The real Barry will surface again, hopefully its Not in Green Bay.
A pig in a dress with lipstick is still a pig.

Just keep CB and CV as starters maybe give 23 dime snaps ? Also even with nice game by defense. Joe B must go Would prefer to hire new dc before fa and draft so he has input on skill sets needed. Not trying to fit sq pegs in rd holes just my thoughts

I’ve had faith in Gutey when he drafted Love, I even loved Love’s college film and can see why some analyst had him in the top 10 of the draft. I also have been on Mlf side throughout his up and downs. I think he is a very good coach, one who holds one of the highest winning percentage in the history of nfl over his first 5 years. Not many coaches could take this young team, with a first year starting QB and have so many KEY injuries take his team to the final game of the year with a chance to make the playoffs. He’s the right blend of empathy and relate ability, wihile not being a push over….see Alexander for an example. IMO, The Packers future is bright with Gutey and Mlf at the helm.

EDIT: TGR, you’re a great writer and really appreciate you knowledge and time to put this together.

I agree with most of this.

I'm ok with Murphy as CEO (which many are not).

I'm more than OK with Gutekunst - I think he is doing a fine job.

I'm mostly ok with LaFleur, but he needs help hiring coordinators (and maybe position coaches too). He relies too much on having previous time spent with the guys he hires, rather than hiring the best guys out there (and he tends to stick with guys when others can clearly see a change is needed). All coaches have faults, the best ones try to fix the things that are not working well and they are the ones that tend to have long careers.

On another tack, I'm not sure the Packers have a true no.1 receiver, but they have a whole hatful of 2's and 3's, enough that missing a true no.1 doesn't matter a lot of the time. Watson, Reed, Doubs, Wicks, while Melton and Heath could be considered a perfectly good no.4s on another team. The only time lacking a true 1 comes into play, is when no-one else can get open - THAT is when you need the little extra from your top guy.

Thanks, as always, to TGR, for putting the snap counts together for us.

I agree with you on Mlf, this is a big off season to see what he does with assistance. I do like that they brought in, with big dollars, Biscosci(sp)….even thou we haven’t seen the big up tick in ST’s this year.

Regarding Murphy, I agree with you, it all starts on top and he is the one who hires the current mgmt. Patience is a virtue and with many fans it is lacking because the grass should always be greener on the other side of the hill. Seeking perfection that doesn’t exist. The Best Franchises in all of sports, not just NFL, have patience and consistency is by keeping Mgmt and coaching in place. Pittsburgh is the perfect example of that. The 80/20 rule works, where 80% churn and have losing long term records and the 20% have patience and longevity with mgmt and have winning records.

Is there anybody yet who is ready to agree with me that returning kicks and punts are losing propositions? For every return, you pay the price in injuries and penalties and yes, turnovers.

You know, if the Packer defense plays well against Chicago, and we win, and then plays well again and we advance, it's going to make the case for replacing Barry much weaker.

“Love completed 24 of 33 attempts (72.7%) for 256 yards (7.76 yards/attempt) with 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. His passer rating was 125.3. Love still misses some layups but he remains poised“ In the last 7 games, he has thrown 16 TD’s to 1 INT and added 2 rushing TDs. Yes, it might seem to miss some passes that seem easy, but name me a QB who doesn’t. Love is rated as a Top 10 QB now and that is with no known except A Jones, as a pass catcher. If you take his last 9 games his rating would sky rocket to Top 5. So, that takes me to ask a question that I’ve been pondering.

Do you sign him to an extension this off season or wait till you see how he does after the opposing teams have a year of tape and see if he can duplicate this season? The way I see it, if you wait and he does succeed next year you are probably going to be in the 45+M per or probably 5-10 M less per year than if you sign him this off season. I’d lean to signing him now.

I'm hoping he wants to win more than he wants every dollar the market would bear. $45MM leaves little room for GB to return to dominance. If he were to play for $20MM and be vocal about it that would exhibit tremendous leadership, if it got others to follow suit. That is a LOT of money, and the difference would provide for several great players vs having to go with JAGs.

I agree: It's a gamble on growth (and injury) on Love to extend him in the off-season, and probably as big a gamble to wait and run the risk him blowing up or leveraging his next deal against FA.

Shore up the OL, find a dynamic young runner to be the heir to AJones (although, I wouldn't be surprised if they ask Jones to take a pay-cut and stay for 2024). The schedule this year was soft, but even with a tougher slate of opponents a better OL will help in Love's development.

Prescott, Cousins, trevor Lawrence, Tua, Fields, Mayfield, and Minshew are QBs who might get a deal this offseason. Oh, and Russell Wilson. Tua and Lawrence might get top of the market deals, but they won't reset it. Fields is not a bad comp for Love except he has 3 full seasons and one can hope for a 2nd year jump from Love.

Agree that it is a gamble. Just noting that at least the market is stable. I'd suggest GB's ability to give a signing bonus in 2024 tops out at $35M

I agree: I think everyone knows the Packers are likely to cut bait on Bakh in the off-season. With his injury history, I don't think anyone will want to inherit his contract in trade unless they really believe in him. They'll wait for the Packers to release him and write a one-year, prove it deal.

Not a strong selling point to be suspended and have the defense play well in your absence.

I think whomever the next DC is will have a strong say in what happens with Jaire.

I can get behind and feel for guys that deal with nagging injuries #Watson . But when they decide to quit on the team, which is just my opinion, Alexander and Campbell have done, see Zadarius Smith from the past.
You have to love and totally respect what these "no names" on the back half of the D are doing!
Ship the bad attitudes and the enormous salaries down the road..

i find it interesting as a psychological matter that it is somehow more fun to read the day after comments after a lousy performance when everyone is often quite funnily venting their rage, than it is when we finally play well and everyone is happy as a clam.

Often, those two dynamics are driven by different populations. Some go quiet after a win, others after a loss.

You'll notice a certain Vikings troll has disappeared since his "Packers will lose out, Vikings will win out" posts a couple weeks ago. Since then, Packers 2-1, Vikings 0-3. Who knows which Packers team shows up against Chicago next week, but fully expect the Lions will run the Vikings off the field as they play for seeding and the Vikings playoff hopes almost completely gone.

Lol. I'll point out the weaknesses that need to be improved even after a win because I love this team and want to see them redeemed from only 2 Lombardi's throughout the careers of #4 and 12. Yet right now there's little need for that and I'm enjoying the STUNNING win :)

Hopefully this team shows up next week ...

We won this game in the trenches on both offensive and defense. Tom and Rhyan looked great both on passing and running plays on offense. Also, our running game needs the back to hit the hole fast vs watching Dillon slowly get there. KUDOS to Jones!

But my biggest observations were on defense. I still hate Barry for his BS, conservative, softy schemes. He is who he is, and won't change long term. But I saw a trend - the Packers weakness against the run is not on the D linemen. It's the positioning of our DBs! When the corners or safeties are off, we give opponents a free 5-10 yards. So why do it? Because it's Joe Barry, playing Barry Ball...

One last observation on D - we look far better with this DB combination than previous ones. Why do we need headcase Jaire in there? Hopefully, he's nervous after watching these 2 young safeties performing well? We need to win against the Bears. Keep Jaire out. The young corners DESERVE to be in!

We all said that the DBs who had carried the G while preferred starters were out due to injury deserved to play. I had a moderate position, saying return the starters on a snap count. I stick to that as being good strategy. Notice Stokes is back out with injury.

""""The offensive line was very good all night.""""

Agreed. People were "baffled" early in the season that the coaches, who aren't as smart or knowledgeable as them, weren't putting our 5 best on the line, or playing people at their best position, etc. Line coaches should be fired. Starters should be benched. Blah blah blah.

Here's what happened. We lost Bakhtiari. We also had Jenkins out for a while, and Runyan playing hurt. So we had guys on the field that we didn't want. But we stuck with Walker, Jenkins and Runyan both healed up, and they got to work with each other, in practice and games. They got to study film together, polish technique, etc. And now it's a pretty good line, IMO. It's cohesive. It has help keep Love from missing any snaps because of injury, which is paramount, because an injured Love is not practicing or playing or developing and neither is the offense.

Anticipating the losses or Runyan and Nijman, we really need to put some quality beef on this unit in the offseason.

LH, as TGR said above' " The Vikings had some success when they moved Danielle Hunter inside to work against Myers and Runyan."

They were better, but I still think they're messing up with Myers. I saw Hunter making him back-pedal like a DB playing zone right into Love's face. I think that's also caused most of Runyan's regression and to a lesser extent Jenkins.

I think other teams have noticed this weakness and are keying on it, which makes it look worse as it goes on. Just hope the Bears have little they can do to take advantage of it, or like the Viqueens, wait till it's too late.

I also wish you a Happy New Year and many thanks for the articles and comments TGR!

There are more major roster decisions to be made this week that have implications for next game, a potential playoff run, and provide a hint as to what the Packers maybe thinking for next season and the draft. Snap counts give a peak into some decisions looming. You have Musgrave, Wilson, and Tenuta coming off of IR. As mentioned previously, players are potentially coming off of injuries/suspensions and perhaps ready to play... Watson seems close, Alexander, Campbell, Wicks, & maybe Reed...Will they all be back? Kinda reminds me of 2 years ago with everybody wanting to return, but perhaps not totally ready. MLF will have to make some tough decisions, while managing egos.

I had the impression they played that they played more down linemen than usual when I watched the game live. Your snap counts refute that, however.

Did I just get that feeling because the D played so much more aggressive? It's like they just flip a switch from one week to the next. Can only hope MLF will keep the peddle to the metal this week too.
