Packers Snap Counts Versus The Giants: Week Five

Winning ugly is much better than yesterday's ugly loss: it is a much better air freshener.

The Packers did not elevate anyone from the practice squad for the Giants game.  Instead, the Packers elected to leave Jack Heflin on the practice squad and to have just four defensive linemen active. The team left Rasheed Walker, Samori Toure, Sean Rhyan, Jonathan Ford and Devonte Wyatt inactive.  Zach Tom and Jordan Love were active but did not play.

The Packers were able to consistently run the ball.  Jones and Dillon combined for 11 carries and 56 yards in the first half, a 5.1-yard average.  Christian Watson lost 3 yards on a jet sweep but otherwise only one run lost yardage.

Rodgers completed 18 of 24 passing attempts in the first half for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns.  His passer rating was 117.9 in the first half.   Rodgers was not sacked and the Giants had no quarterback hits in the first half.  There was some pressure on Rodgers including from some free rushers necessitating a hot read.  Royce Newman gave up some ground on occasion.  Still, the Packers scored two touchdowns and two field goals on their five possessions, yielding a healthy 20 points in the first half.

Randall Cobb caught 5 of 8 targets for 76 yards, while Doubs contributed 21 yards on 2 receptions.  Marcedes Lewis and Allen Lazard combined only caught three passes for 10 yards in the first half, but each of them had a touchdown reception.  There were some receptions exploiting the middle of the field to Cobb and Doubs, both with plenty of yards gained after the catch.  The Packers failed to connect on any of their deep passes.  The Packers' time of possession was 17 minutes and 24 seconds in the first half to 12 minutes and 36 seconds for the Giants.

Jones and Dillon combined for just 8 carries for 41 yards in the second half, still good for a 5.1 yard average.  Rodgers completed 7 of 15 passes for 75 yards in the second half.  There was more pressure in the second half as Rodgers was sacked twice and hit four times.  The Packers had 3 possessions plus the final one play, hail mary possession, but failed to score on any of them.  One of their possessions last just 26 seconds due to 3 incomplete passes right after the Giants scored a touchdown on an eight minute drive consisting of 15 plays and 91 yards.  The Giants' time of possession in the secon half was 19 minutes and 35 seconds, to Green Bay's 10 minutes and 25 seconds.

The Packers ran 33.9% of plays, and passed 66.1% of the time.  The Giants played 5.25 defensive backs on average per play.  They had big Dexter Lawrence on the field for 57 snaps out of 63 plays (90%) but played 2.03 true defensive linemen per play overall.  I saw some formations that looked inhospitable to runs, but it appears that the personnel was more defensive backs than big beefy players.  Jones and Dillon need more than 21 touches in games.

The Packers allowed 10 points in the first half and 17 more in the second half.  Kenny Clark dominated the opposing center in the first half as he seemed to live in the backfield.  Clark had 3 tackles (2 solo) in the first half, but he had no stats in the second half.  Preston Smith added 2 tackles (1 solo), a tackles for loss, and a sack in the first half.  Smith finished with 3 quarterback hits and 4 tackles.

Jarran Reed had a sack/forced fumble that he recovered at the Giants' 7-yard line, but a holding call on Rasul Douglas gave the Giants five yards and a first down.  They would then march down the field for a touchdown, with the big play being a 40-yard run on a direct snap to Saquon Barkley.  The touchdown came on a 2-yard double reverse to the Giants' tight end, Daniel Bellinger.  It looked like Dean Lowry had a chance to shut down that play had he been a little more aware.  Rashan Gary would also have a sack erased due to a holding penalty called on Darnell Savage, though that penalty was a little ticky-tacky.  The Giants got a field goal on a 56-yard on that possession.

Other than the 40-yard run, the Packers held Barkley to 15 yards on 6 carries in the first half.  Daniels, Breida and Bellinger each got a carry that netted a combined 8 yards.  Barkley rushed 6 times for 15 more yards in the second half.  Daniel Jones started to both scramble and execute some designed runs.  Jones finished with 37 yards on 10 carries, but most of them were "successful" runs in that they gained a first down.

Daniel Jones completed 8 of 13 passes for 81 yards in the first half, including 46 yards to WR Darius Slayton, who seemed to catch passes over the middle and elsewhere else all day.  Jones completed 13 of 14 passes for 136 yards in the second half.  I did not see Daniel Jones make a "big-time" throw; rather, the defensive secondary seemed dazed and confused, with plenty of communication breakdowns.  Quay Walker finished with 8 tackles (5 solo) while Campbell had 5 solo tackles.

Special Teams:

Although it does not show up clearly in the snap counts, it is interesting that after Amari Rodgers fumbled during a punt return, Christian Watson took over the kickoff return duties.  The Giants did not punt again, so there is no evidence whether another player would have replaced Amari Rodgers on punt returns.

WR: 2.73

TE: 1.22

RB: 1.05

DL: 2.67

ILB: 1.85

OLB: 2.0

DB: 4.48

So, having read the comments to the Gut Reaction article, rather than paraphrase them I will just incorporate by reference.

Cobb got more snaps. Nijman got more snaps. Reed continues to get more snaps than Lowry, though the two come in close together. There were some changes in the distribution of special teams snaps. Myers has some nice plays, but he is inconsistent. Christian Watson needs more than one carry and one target. It is easier to get Watson some snaps and reps when winning, but I am not sure what a better alternative might be.

Thanks again for these TGR.

If Watson is going to miss time with the hamstring maybe it's time to give Will Fuller a call. Too many deep attempts going to Cobb and Lazard.

9 offensive snaps for Degaura and 1 for Amari Rodgers.

Good thing we have SO MUCH TALENT at TE and WR that there simply is no need for our 2020 and 2021 third round picks to contribute.

Didn’t Deguara get two first downs despite that? Lack of talent or poor use of it?

I am getting a sinking feeling neither ML nor Barry know the talent of their players well enough to employ plays and game strategies to maximize their strengths.

ML talks about playing "the best 5 on the OL." Just words. If ML truly believes Newman is one of his "best 5", then the sentence above is being proven. I don't think Newman is even remotely one of the best 6. Bakh, JRJ, Myers, Jenks, Yosh seem the top 5 line with Tom next man up.

I also think Myers would be more effective if Jenks joined him and JRJ, who is having a good season, on the interior. This all assumes Bakh can still play LT.

Barry has been given the most D talent of his career. Speed, size, skills, decent depth and Barry coaches not to lose with huge communication breakdowns, especially among the DBs during their clueless zone coverages (most of the snaps).

Does Bisaccia ask for the Amari Rodgers experiment to be over this week? He has certainly looked frustrated by his decision making at times.

The distribution of snaps to the D line looked about the same as most weeks, Slaton played a little more than he has most games. Maybe the Giants drives of 7 and 8 minutes to start the 2nd half wore them down a little?

Maybe Toure becomes active and AmRod sits. Toure can return kicks and Cobb can return punts, too. I think Toure has a better shot at playing offensive snaps.

AmRod's roster prospects are on life support and they're calling the crash cart.

We are not using Watson as a receiver. It’s criminal to be going in with Lazard, Cobb, Doubs and a Gadget. It strongly limits the flexibility of use if those three and rules out speed as well as limiting route trees and options.

We brought in Deguara and he managed to convert then disappeared. We aren’t using our pieces. We are predictable. It says something when Doubs is routinely double covered. Again it was dunk & dunk or attempted long balls. And, of course, when the chips are down we dump the run. I could go on about the pony and our refusal to pass out of it. This team is at war with its own dynamic on O. It’s indicative of a leadership woefully lacking in both vision and competence.

This has been coming all season, if anything our response has been to exacerbate it on O. That’s not to dismiss the chaotic secondary, but I suspect some of that is rooted in the overall malaise as well. The Giants showed attitude. We just showed up and expected. Rodgers comments suggest that he just doesn’t get it or is in complete denial. Cobb and Lazard seem to have become mental crutches.

I think I'd just let Doubs return punts. I'm guessing they don't want to put too much on his plate but at some point you have to win games.

What we have here is the Favre effect. The Packers are repeating history with the dali llama Rodgres who cannot be criticized. He plays 100% of snaps and basically calls the plays. With 2 stud running backs, play action and short ball control passing would be easy. Time for the head coach to grow a pair and call him out. After the game the 50 million dollar man thru everyone under the bus for the loss.

One half of good play. Hmmm.

Giants seemed to make adjustments that worked at half time. Hmmm.

This seems like the first game that penalties negated big plays for the Packers.

TGR, do you think that the Parkers just aren't very good? They have talent, but don't play and communicate with each other well. These run pass options keep turning into passes as the games go on. Coaching or is that on the quarterback?

I like the fact that Watson replaced Amari Rodgers. - Are Watson hands are better? More to come!

NYG were a bottom 4 team against the rush coming into this game. They were top 10 vs. the pass, even if they lost a couple guys in-game. Packers played a lot more 11 personnel than they've played so far this season, even though Watson got hurt in the first half and was out. I won't repeat your run-pass selection comments above except to say this was a team that played with a lead for about 50 minutes yesterday and only trailed for about 6.

Packers played more DL snaps, it seemed, than usual, but still left two of their rostered DL inactive?

It's clear that they need to take an ILB off the field on passing downs and play more true nickel, and dime.

I think it's more a matter of the phasing out of 8 for a player they know isn't taking an active, game-day spot from someone who might contribute rotationally on O or D.

Even after Watson got hurt, did 8 see the field? Nope.

IN EDIT: this was supposed to go under stockholder's comment above.

GB played 1.62 ILBs per play in 2021 despite their options being bad (Barnes/527 snaps) and terrible (Burks/205 snaps). [Burks actually was better than he had been in prior years].

GB played 5.05 DBs in 2021.
Here is the trend in 2022:

Week 1: 1.70 ILBs/DBs - 4.67
Week 2: 1.78 ILBs/DBs - 4.63
Week 3: 1.85 ILBs/DBs - 4.97
Week 4: 1.86 ILBs/DBs - 4.55
Week 5: 1.85 ILBs/DBs - 4.48

Okay, that is not an overwhelming wave at the ILB position, but it is significant. Your corollary is that DBs might be too low (?), and that is a huge change. Looking at snap numbers (rather than averaging the above numbers), GB is playing 4.67 DBs per play in 2022, down from 5.05 in 2021. That is seismic.

Not all of the decrease in DBs went to ILB. DL in 2022 is 2.50 per play. It was 2.31 in 2021. I rather like that trend, though it would be nice if they could just toss Clark and Leonard Williams out there and voila - run defense fixed, need just 2.0 DL per play. That isn't the personnel we have.

I assume you would remove Walker rather than Campbell, at least at this stage of Walker's development. While the talent oozes out of Walker, he is not at this point overall an improvement over Barnes. My other thought is evolving: I didn't think they had another DB worth playing to get to dime. IDK, I am not certain but perhaps Nixon or Ford can contribute. I had hoped to see Jean-Charles take a jump, but with just 3 snaps this season, I guess the coaches don't see it, yet.

The surprise is how many snaps Lewis got. Blocking: I want both Bahk and Nijman togather. Forget Lewis. As long as Rodgers wants to go long. Use the OL.

Where in the hell is Zack Tom?

He has earned some PT, he should be on the field.
