Packers Snap Counts Versus Washington: Week 7
The Packers ground out another victory, this one against the Washington Football Team, despite being short-handed. Here are the snap counts.
The Packers promoted Ben Braden from the Practice Squad as a Covid Replacement Player. The inactive players were Kevin King, Heflin, Preston Smith, Vernon Scott and Dennis Kelly. Jake Hanson and Jordan Love were active but did not play.

The Packers' offensive line met its match against Washington's talented front four. The line allowed 6 quarterback hits and 3 sacks in the first half. Montez Sweat had 3 QB hits and a sack plus a forced fumble later, while elite defensive tackle Jonathan Allen had 3 QB hits and 2 sacks. Some of Washington's success came from stunts and nice defensive calls. The Packers did adjust in the second half, allowing zero QB hits. Only Elgton Jenkins allowed no pressures.
The Packers did not seem to even try to run in this game. In the first half, Jones had carries of 9, 2, and 1. Hill and Dillon each had one carry for 3 and 2 yards, respectively. St. Brown contributed a 13 yard carry on a jet sweep and Rodgers scrambled twice for gains of 15 and 2 yards, respectively. Jones carried the ball 3 more times in the second half for 7 yards. Dillon carried the ball twice in the second half and gained 2 yards, while Hill carried 2 times in the second half but failed to gain any net yards. Dillon fumbled twice, losing one.
Fortunately, Aaron Rodgers was sharp in this game, completing 77.15% of his passing attempts, including 19 of 23 attempts in the first half. Lazard caught five of his six targets for 60 yards on one drive, including a touchdown reception to put the Packers up 14-7. Lazard led all wide receivers with 51 snaps. Adams led the team with 6 receptions on 7 targets for 76 yards and a touchdown. Tonyan got untracked with 63 yards on 4 receptions. Marcedes Lewis continues to provide enough pass catching ability to go with his blocking: he had 3 receptions on 3 targets for 31 yards. Cobb and Jones pitched in 22 and 20 yards, respectively. Aaron Rodgers finished with a passer rating of 127.6. Rodgers completed 9 of 11 passes with a target depth of 10 yards of more, good for 152 yards and 2 touchdowns, per Pro Football Focus.

The Packers front 7 did a nice job of applying pressure to Heinicke. Rashan Gary had 7 pressures (per PFF), including 4 QB hits and 2 sacks, one of which was a huge sack/fumble. He also added 7 tackles (4 solo). De'Vondre Campbell continues to be a revelation. He had 13 tackles (10 solo) with four stops, plus two huge forced fumbles. Campbell caused Heinicke to fumble on the goal line. Adrian Amos had 6 solo tackles and 2 pass breakups. According to Pro Football Reference, Amos has missed just 2 tackles entering the Washington game, good for a 4.7% missed tackle percentage. Amos is very good at coming up to limit gains and make the opposing team's offense earn its first downs. Whitney Mercilus played 31 snaps and definitely showed that he can still rush the quarterback. Keke had 2 QB hits and 1.5 sacks, plus 6 tackles (4 solo) and a tackle for loss. Lowry, Clark and Garvin each added a QB hit.
Washington did rush the ball 29 times for 195 yards, a 6.7-yard average. Heinicke scrambled 10 times for 95 yards, but that still means the running backs carried the ball 19 times for 100 yards. In some ways, this game was about big plays on defense.
Chandon Sullivan had a fine day. He allowed 3 receptions on 4 targets but for just 17 yards, per PFF. Rasul Douglas will get dinged for a ticky-tacky pass interference penalty, but he also had a pass breakup and continued his physical style of play, which led to a forced fumble. Savage also added a pass breakup but missed a tackle which led to an explosive play. Stokes was active. He gave up some plays but was around the ball. Overall, his play has been encouraging and someone had to cover McLaurin.
Bojorquez had three beautiful punts. He forced two fair catches and the other punt was down around the five yard line or so. At least one punt seemed far too close to being blocked for my comfort. Crosby had a field goal blocked due to the low trajectory of the attempt, though there was some penetration allowed. The punt and kickoff coverage teams had no issues.

I think Whitney Mercilus playing 31 snaps is interesting and encouraging. He bull rushed for a couple of pressures at least. I will have to watch again to see where some of the runs came from up front.
Henry Black didn't have a great day. I wonder what's wrong with Vernon Scott that he can't get on the field.
I am encouraged by Rasul Douglas. Very scrappy and manages to be around the ball.

On that blocked FG try, WFT defender ruined Runyan and, he was 2 yards closer to kick point that should be normal. That guy just pushed on side Runyan and was almost behind the line of defenders.
Also, the kick was low, with what I agree.
Douglas played well. I was watching game on Croatian TV and I was listening our Croatian commentators, they were both surprised by the call and their comment was that if that is PI, we can get a festival of yellow flags through the game...

The D finally got off the snide on that Red Zone monkey they had on their backs, so that's a start, let's hope it continues.
I was somewhat surprised at how much Mercilus played, and it's good to see there's plenty left in the tank. It'll be fun to see him when Preston Smith returns, opposing teams can't double everyone.
I liked Douglas in the Bears game, and he didn't disappoint yesterday, looks like a great pick-up, and Jaylon Smith looked much better too.
After only 7 starts with a new D-coordinator, it looks like they're getting better, still too many missed assignments in the secondary from my perspective, but injuries might be contributing to that.
The Cardinals and Murray will be a challenge, they let Heinicke run free, Murray is far better, we'll see.

Yes, Douglas' play has been a revelation. Love the way he hits guys. Much preferred over King, IMO.

He's familiar with the scheme the Packer's run. Houston ran a modified Stanley which was very close to what the Packers run under both Pettine and now Barry. He was very good yesterday in limited snaps.

Really great stuff, TGR.
Aaron Jones getting 6 rushing attempts for a full game is malpractice. AJ Dillon, only getting 3? Both combining for less than double digit attempts???
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT THERE?!!!”
Loved to see Mercilus getting more reps than I thought he would get. Both Keke & Lowry made plays, but, I’d like to see Slaton get more opportunities. Campbell & Gary were both stellar.

Lack of pass defense by WFT combined with upcoming game Thursday night explains no run game plan to me.

It looked like a conscious effort not to overplay anyone on the front to me. There is certainly some basis for thinking that part of this game plan did have an eye on Thursday.

There's plenty of ways to win games, and though you need to have a run game functioning well to win long term, there's no problem in winning through the air once in awhile as well, particularly against a really tough front, with a beat up offensive line and with another game in 4 days.

I agree with Archie and CW, G&G. This was Matt's game plan...pass against a weak secondary...don't pound the ball into the teeth of the WFTs absolute strength...that front 4, all first rounders and the envy of the NFL. Attack with the pass game, and if effective keep the infantry relatively fresh for the Thursday game.
I was listening to Greg Matzick's post game show and he thought Matt was very wise to prepare this last week for two opponents. He said, and I agree, it is easier to recover in 4 days following a pass O, vs a heavy load of running.
Now, if it had failed.....

Packers sub the swing pass game for the run game when their O line couldn't get any push in the second quarter. WFT doubled Jones and Dillon out of the backfield leaving both TE/F-Back open, which Rodgers promptly found. WFT DL stoned the Packers OL for the most part. Credit Hackett with adjusting game plan, and credit Rodgers with finding the dead and soft spots in the short middle of WFT defense.

Way too many rushing yards given up the past 2 games , this is because of the scheme of 2 down lineman.

Confused as to what Josiah Deguara's role is. Through 7 games he has zero rushes and 2 receptions for 4 yards. I was under the impression he would be lining up all over the field as a fullback, H-back, TE, etc. Still injured?...not picking up the playbook?...the dreaded non-trust issues from Rodgers? Green Bay really needs to get more production out of their 3rd rounders after the Montravious Adams and Jace Sternberger fiascos. I hope it's just a slow start and nothing more. Three 3rd round busts in a row would not be good.

Given how much MLF loves DeGuara ya gotta believe he's got some residual issues with his ACL tear from last year. Maybe he will be utilized a lot more in 2nd half.

October 25, 2021 at 10:01 am
Deguara looked rusty, I think had Daffney been healthy they would have held him back longer, but we’ve really seen very little of what we thought we would see as the H back role this year. We’ve also been running a slimmed down playbook all year it seems. Since we’ve been winning, perhaps just tactically unnecessary?

October 25, 2021 at 01:39 pm
You are right CW. Looks like the Packers are limiting Deguara's snaps. And Daffney's lost seems to have removed a portion of the playbook in the short term. But on the bright side, Lafleur will have more unscouted looks to confuse his opponents when playoff time approaches.

It was my thought, too. Why to open playbook so everyone can read it. I expect some really interesting offensive snaps aginst Cards and I expect different D than we were watching up to day. Or you and me can be wrong...

Mercilus and Douglas have been excellent additions by Gute and will provide very good depth going forward. J. Smith has been a bit of a disappointment to date. I can forgive the first week due to unfamiliarity with the scheme, but I expected more this week as he learns what Barry wants him to do. Hopefully his performance changes soon. If J. Smith works out, that will be quite a trio of reinforcements found by Gute.
Barry is going to have to find someone to mirror Murray (Ari.) or he is going to kill us with his running Thursday night. Unfortunately mirroring will also reduce the pass defenders by one. Arizona will be a big challenge for this defense. Mercilus, Douglas and J. Smith will need to come up big for the Pack!

Barry plays a similar scheme to the Rams, who AZ plays twice per year. I think they'll be ready for anything the Packers have on film. Can Barry scheme up something they can't handle?
Coldworld
October 25, 2021 at 10:04 am
He definitely needs to account for the QB as part of his game plan. That is something he hasn’t done at all this year. Playing so much man will be risky unless he has a dedicated spy, which tends to force some zone elements.

I'd be more optimistic if Barry had all his weapons available for this game. With Z. Smith and Alexander out, Barry has his work cut out for him. I think the replacements (Mercilus, J. Smith and Douglas) are going to have to have big games to give the Packer D a chance.

I totally agree with your points (and from what I see, expect that they will be better week-on-week).
This may sound a little defeatist but here are my expectations from the game:
1) The offense plays well and scores efficiently. If the Packers do lose then I don't want it to be like the NFCCG and by the O not being able to get it done. This O cannot get owned this week and expect to win in January..... Bakh and MVS are certainly losses, but their absence shouldn't cause "ownership".
2) If the D does get owned, then its via the packages when the replacements are on the field (possibly Murray escaping a collapsing pocket and making [those absurd] gains [that only he and Jackson can make] that way). I'd like to see the D line at least holding its own this time around...... the reinforcements are coming in December\January for the other position groups and edge rushing.

Yeah, good point. Barry also has a thick book and lots of film on the Cards too.
I wonder if Barry thinks Jaylon Smith can play more Thursday, with his key mission to spy the QB first and clean up as second responsibility. Smith still has the speed.
Minniman
October 25, 2021 at 01:47 pm
Re Smith, I was thinking something similar.
Do you trust Smith yet over Amos in that role? I think that the effectiveness of the spy role (if employed) will really depend on the discipline of the D line to control the edges and limit Murray's escape options.

For many of you who was marking Packers 6-1 record as a result of weak schedule at the beginning of the season, I want to inform you that Bengals destroyed another 5-1 team (Ravens) as visitor 41-17 (similar as Packers destroyed Lions - 35-17). That is how weak schedule Packers had. It looks like the game vs Saints were really preseason game for Packers - that is why Packers was so down.

I see Zach Kruse published some of the PFF grades for this game. No surprise that Henry Black had a 25.6 grade. Royce Newman's 35.1 grade unfortunately also isn't surprising.
Rasul Douglas being the highest graded Packer is a surprise despite having a good game IMO because I thought PFF would ding him for the penalty (88.3). Douglas was followed closely by Campbell at 88.2. Gary had a fine grade of 82.0 while Amos, whose praises are not sufficiently sung on blogs, had another fine day with an 80.7.

Thanks TGR. I'd be keen to know what Stokes graded out as too....... although to the eye test, he's doing OK considering he's covering the opponents WR1 more than you'd like a rookie to be doing.
Isn't Douglas proving a find!
I'm looking forward to seeing Mercilus' play this coming week - with a few more days in the system.
Thegreatreynoldo
October 25, 2021 at 05:59 pm
Stokes was graded at 75.9, which is well above average.
BTW, PFF suggested that Mercilus had 4 hurries in 23 pass rushing opportunities in his 31 snaps. No QB hits though he did deposit the LT in Heinicke's lap on one rush (that means the LT made contact with the QB even if Mercilus did not).

Matt's decision to pass vs run makes sense vs WFT, especially on a short week. WFT Defense ranks 6th in the NFL In yards per rush....Cardinals rank 31st. Looks to me like AJ and AJD are going to get a lot of work on Thursday. Good to keep them as fresh as possible yesterday because Thursday will be a busy evening.
Conversely, the WFT Defense ranks just 22nd in pass yards given up per play....Cards rank 3rd. Good pass defense in AZ!

Question why doesnt green bay just trade thier 3rd round pick every yr what the heck cant remember last time a 3rd round pick did anything lol.
Maybe cooper will, but the overhyped degura is just the next in line . Yes on this site people ragged on me for saying this about degura.
