Packers Snap Counts Vs. The Browns: Week 3, 2025

The Packers cannot grind out a victory by playing a clean game.

After placing Jayden Reed on injured reserve, the Packers have only 51 players on their active roster.  The Packers chose to leave those roster spots empty and to not elevate any players from the practice squad.  The Packers apparently feel that their 48-man active gameday roster would remain unchanged even if they signed a player or two to the 53-man roster or if they elevated a player from the PS.  The inactives were all healthy scratches: OL Donovan Jennings, DL Warren Brinson, and CB Kamel Hadden.

OFFENSIVE LINE:

Player Snaps % STs
Rhyan 65 100 3/13%
Jenkins 65 100
Morgan 64 98 3/13%
Walker 61 94 3/13%
Belton 35 54 3/13%
Banks 30 46 1/4%
Kinnard 4 6 3/13%
Tom 1 2

The offensive line had a terrible time out there.  I do not think any of them played well.  Tom only lasted 1 snap before his injury flared up and he had to take a seat.  Aaron Banks lasted 30 snaps before he departed, and he struggled when he was on the field.  I have written repeatedly that I do not think the Packers medical staff are particularly cautious.

Jenkins whiffed completely once while generally allowing push.  I expected Jenkins to provide a significant improvement over Josh Myers, but that boost just has not materialized.  Jordan Morgan had a brutal game which included 3 penalties.  Rasheed Walker had some successes and some failures.  He also had a bad false start that stopped the clock when the Packers were trying to bleed the clock down.  Rhyan and Belton were also up and down.

The Packers gained 81 yards on 31 carries, good for a 2.61-yard average.  They were able to run a little better on the perimeter and when receivers ran jet sweeps.  Josh Jacobs' 1.9 yards per carry average was more indicative of the line's actual ability to open up holes.  I thought Jacobs ran hard.

The line allowed 5 sacks and 7 QB hits.  The problem was that the pressure came so quickly, and Love usually could not step up into the pocket.  Most of the sacks and pressures were on the line as opposed to being Love's fault.  There was a sack that he should have avoided by throwing the ball away but the pressure again was almost immediate and intense.

The coaches and players seemed terrified of Myles Garrett.  I lost count of how many false starts were called.  Morgan had at least two.  Rasheed had at least one and Malik Heath added yet another false start.  The Packers were penalized a whopping 14 times for 75 yards.  It is hard to say, but I do at least wonder whether having a play sheet specifically for when Myles Garrett was out was a good idea.  Garrett played 52 of the 65 possible snaps (80%).  DT Maliek Collins had a monster game, with a lot of it coming against Green Bay's guards.  DT Mason Graham, who was taken in the first round of the 2025 draft with the 5th pick, looks like he can play immediately.  DT Maliek Collins, who I already mentioned, is entering his 10th season and has been a good player for a long time.  That said, at some point the offensive line has to produce even against good defenses.  I expect to learn that the Packers played a lot of snaps in 12 personnel.

QUARTERBACKS:

Player Snaps % STs
Love 65 100
Willis DNP

Love completed 18 of 25 attempts (72%) for 183 yards (7.32 yards/attempt) with 1 TD and 1 horrible interception.  Love had a passer rating of 89.2.   LaFleur took the blame for the interception, suggesting that he should have called a different play.  Be that as it may, the Browns were in man coverage.  Love expected the linebacker (Delphit) to run with Tucker Kraft but Delphit was actually playing a zone and passed Kraft off and dropped back into the passing lane.  Love threw the ball right to him.  Other than that, Love was under a lot of pressure all game.  The Browns were able to get pressure with 4 rushers.

RUNNING BACKS:

Player Snaps STs
Jacobs 43 66
Wilson 15 23
Brooks 8 12 12/52%

Josh Jacobs gained 30 yards on 16 carries (1.87 yards/carry) with a long of 7.  Jacobs ran hard.  He also caught 5 of 9 targets for 44 yards, a 8.8-yard average.  He had no drops.  Jacobs did have some lapses in pass protection.  Emanuel Wilson got more snaps than Brooks for the first time, probably because the team needed to get some positive yards on the ground and Wilson is a better runner than Chris Brooks.  Wilson gained 25 yards on 6 carries, good for a 4.16-yard average.  Brooks got no carries.

TIGHT ENDS:

Player Snaps % STs
Kraft 57 88 1/4%
Fitzpatrick 15 23 5/22%
Musgrave 13 20 4/17%
Sims     3/13%

Kraft caught 3 of 4 targets for 29 yards, a 7.25 yards/attempt average.  Fitzpatrick caught both of his targets for 12 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown catch.  Musgrave was not targeted.  The tight ends spent the whole game blocking, either chipping and then running a route or simply blocking.  On his touchdown reception, Fitzpatrick chipped, lost himself in the wash and then sat in a hole in the zone until Love, who was rolling out, found him.  The offensive line needed more help than the tight ends were able to supply, and all the blocking and chipping rendered the TEs less of an offensive threat.

WIDE RECEIVERS:

Player Snaps % STs
Doubs 58 89
Golden 46 71 6/26%
Wicks 44 68
Heath 17 46 None
Williams 6 19 3/13%

Golden caught all 4 of his targets for 52 yards, a 13-yard average.  He added 3 carries for 9 yards.  Doubs added 25 yards on 2 receptions.  Wicks caught 2 of 4 targets for 21 yards.  Although the wide receivers failed to break 100 receiving yards, I think most of the problem is not related to personnel.  I do not think Love had time to keep his eyes downfield long enough to complete longer-developing routes.  The Browns realized that they could get home with 4 and force the ball to come out quickly.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE:

Player Snaps % STs
Wooden 38 58 4/17%
Brooks 38 58 9/39%
Wyatt 38 58
Stackhouse 10 15 5/22%

Wooden, Brooks and Wyatt each played 38 snaps.  Wooden had 2 assisted tackles and Brooks had 1 solo tackle and 1 QB hit.  Wyatt and Stackhouse had no statistics.  The Browns gained 96 rushing yards on 19 carries, a 5.05-yard average.  The Packers kept a good-looking running back in Quishon Judkins in check except for a 38-yard run which was immediately followed by a 14-yard run.  Judkins otherwise averaged 2.65 yards per carry.  Wyatt left the game with an injury.

DEFENSIVE ENDS:

Player Snaps % STs
Parsons 51 77
Gary 44 67
Van Ness 30 45 14/61%
Enagbare 15 23 14/61%
Sorrell 6 9 6/26%

Rashan Gary had 3 solo tackles, 3 QB hits, 2 sacks, and 2 tackles for loss.  That is a fine game, and a player taking advantage of more single blocking.  Parsons had 2 solo tackles and 2 QB hits to go with 4 pressures.  Van Ness had 2 tackles (1 solo) and 2 QB hits.  Van Ness tied Gary for the team lead in pressures with 5.  Enagbare added a QB hit and provided a hard edge.  Sorrell had no statistics.  The defensive ends provided 2 sacks and 8 QB hits.  Overall, the defensive line was pretty stout and provided a lot of pressure.  The Browns scored a touchdown on a 1 play, 4-yard drive and a field goal on a 5 play, 16-yard drive.  That is 10 points in a 37 second span of time.  The Packers offense gave great field position to the Browns.

LINEBACKERS:

Player Snaps % STs
Walker 66 100 4/17%
Cooper 66 100 4/17%
McDuffie 22 33 19/83%
Hopper 3 5 16/70%
Niemann     16/70%

Quay Walker had 14 tackles (6 solo) with 1 QB hit and 1 pass defensed.  He was very active.  He did allow a 5 completions on 6 targets for 35 yards.  McDuffie had 5 tackles (2 solo) and a QB hit.  Cooper had 4 tackles (2 solo) with a pass defensed.  Niemann had a special teams tackle and Hopper had no statistics.

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

Player Snaps % STs
McKinney 66 100 7/30%
Williams 63 95 8/35%
Nixon 63 95 4/17%
Hobbs 48 73 4/17%
Bullard 37 56 8/35%
Valentine 22 33 7/30%
Anderson     13/57%
Olapado     6/26%

It looks like Bullard is playing solely in the slot and Nixon and Hobbs are playing outside with Valentine sliding outside sometimes to allow Hobbs to play nickel or slot.  Bullard hit his head hard and did not return.  McKinney had 6 tackles (2 solo), an interception and a passed defensed.  Williams had 6 tackles (4 solo), but he allowed 4 completions on 4 targets for 40 yards.  Nixon had 4 solo tackles and he was called for pass interference in the end zone.  That still only resulted in a field goal.  Hobbs had 2 solo tackles and a tackle for loss.  He allowed just 1 completion on 3 targets.    Valentine had an assisted tackle and did not allow a completion.  The Packers held Flacco to a 55.6 passer rating and just 142 passing yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Daniel Whelan flipped the field several times with booming punts.  He average 53 yards gross and 50 net.  McManus made his only extra point and missed a 43-yard punt when his low trajectory caused it to be blocked.  It looked to me like he also pulled it off line.  DT Shelby Harris blocked the field goal; it looked like he got some penetration against Walker and Morgan on the left side.

RB: 1.02

TE: 1.31

RB: 0.98

WR: 2.63

DT: 1.88

 DE: 2.21

LB: 2.38

DB: 4.53

Rashan Gary gets his photo used because he had an excellent game. He took advantage of getting more one on ones now that Parsons is soaking up double teams. I liked what I saw from LVN and I thought Enagbare was hard nosed out there.

Joe Flacco is pretty immobile so one should expect some good results. Jerry Jeudy should be a team's #2 WR. He signed for $17.5M and that seems about right for him. Cedric Tillman was a 3rd round pick in 2023. He would be the #4 on GB. Jamari Thrash is a 5th round pick last year who had 22 receiving yards in 2024. He'd be the no. 5 or 6 WR in GB. Nice defense, but these guys are not world beaters.

Rasheed Walker threw some nice blocks but he also got a lot of help and had too many lapses. Maliek Collins destroyed Jordan Morgan. Watching some tape, Shelby Harris and Collins took turns terrorizing Jenkins and Morgan. Jenkins is not transitioning well to center. The team is not getting the upgrade at center that was anticipated but we are getting the downgrade at left guard. I hope a healthy Aaron Banks will eventually solve that equation. Rhyan seemed fairly decent, and I did not really notice Belton too much. He got beat by Huntingdon but Collins got to Love first. Belton did move some guys in the run game a few times. Maybe I was watching the other side of the line too much.

In edit: I should mention that I did not realize that Banks played 30 snaps. I thought he left the game early on. It seems likely that some of the poor plays I attributed to Jordan Morgan likely actually involved Banks. I remember that the TV announcers did not bother to tell us that Banks had left the lineup, but someone (dobber?) let us know in the watch party.

Gary had a good game.
One of Gary's sacks , came when he was completely unblocked.
But we'll take it, Rashan needs a double digit sack season.

A good game?

How do you expect the offense to keep overcoming a D that gives up around 13 points a game?

Interesting because I saw Gary pressuring the QB and getting sacks when Parsons was one on one and did not get in the backfield.

Isn’t that normal, for a player to get beat by another at times? Sometimes even the best gets beat by another player. That’s football or for that matter, any sport.

Lots to clean up on offense, but the blunder of the game was on special teams. Shelby Harris is a Browns special team ace and he got a paw on the field goal attempt which should never happen at that close range. Not sure if it was the blocker (Morgan?) or McManus kicking too low, but without that block, the Packers win. Ouch!

I don’t get why they keep Coach B. He took us from the cellar to average, but for top pay that’s not enough. His biggest achievement was to provide Gutey with players on the Raiders who are worth pursuing and possibly helping convince said players to sign with GB.

Not sure how Love's interception was MLF's fault.
Last i checked Love is a grown ass man and he made the throw.

MLF doesn't have to take the blame for Love.
This isn't pee wee football.

Yes. Kraft was the first read. Love's internal clock is wound too fast. See the WR then release. LaFleur doesn't seem to understand the 3rd and short play variations. Where was Musgrave in this game plan?

In my opinion, Love is unfairly criticized by some. The constant pressure likely caused his decision-making to quicken. It was a matter of making a quick read or getting sacked. Top quarterbacks like Mahomes also falter under that kind of pressure. The problems aren't with Love, but with the offensive line. Mahomes had some poor throws last night, especially when pressured. Every QB does under the same pressure Love was on last night.

Also, he had his FIRST turnover in 9 games and now some folks want him sent down the road. I don't get that type of irrational thinking.

I couldn't figure out how to get the game on and gave up trying to sign in to YouTube. Instead, I had to watch the NFL Network live game action where they had little to say about this game. Most of the highlights they showed were of Love getting sacked and I remember them showing one completion each to Wicks and Golden who they couldn't figure out why he ran out of bounds on his go rout reception. Did look like he might have taken it to the house, but it was only shown from the back angle. They did quote Rasheed Walker saying before the game that, "The Packers could go undefeated." Might have to play the game first.

Here's what Leigh Oleszak said in an article saying MLF is pointing his finger at the O-line after the loss.

"Jordan Morgan ended up coming in for Tom and did not play well, allowing three pressures and a sack (per Pro Football Focus). Sean Rhyan also allowed three pressures and a sack, and Elgton Jenkins surrendered two pressures and two sacks. Those aren't good stats, folks."

He went on to talk about the O-line penalties and how disappointed he is because he thought Jenkins would be an instant improvement over Myers. I think/hope he's just getting started because he "held in" for most of camp. I was worried about that at the time.

I'm still positive about Walker at LT.
Note the helmet breaking-
While facemasks can withstand extreme stress,
impacts to this area are still a significant cause of concussions.
A 2024 study noted that nearly one-third of concussions
in pro football result from facemask impacts.
This demonstrates that while the facemask itself may not break,
the force transmitted through it is strong enough to cause a brain injury.
IMO- Walkers play deserves more praise.
Then his brain lapse at times.

Walker had Garrett the majority of the time. It was not Garrett that wreaked havoc. The rest of the line was adequate (Rhyan) to downright terrible (Morgan). In Morgan’s defense, he has coaches who steadfastly refused to see a need to have him get reps at RT. It’s likely that he got few this week as they started Tom who managed 1 snap. That kind of foreseeability is such that the handling was unforgivable and one has to hope it doesn’t magnify by undermining Morgan’s confidence. What a waste of a mini bye too for health going forward.

I’m not going to dwell on a miserably conservative game plan or that we couldn’t change it up. This time the spot light should be squarely on Butkus and Stenovich and STs )which others have addressed. Our D is championship caliber. Our O is very much not and hadn’t been outside of one maybe two quarters in twelve. Yesterday nor were our STs. We got rid of Barry, but keeping him as long as we did masked the almost as big and likely as fatal retention of Stenavich and Butkus.

i have pointed out that these teams we have played so far have some good personnel on the defensive line.

That said, if the Pack is really a playoff team and a super bowl contender, the offensive line has to be able to battle with a superior defensive line. Good teams will have good players in the trenches.

Agreed: Cleveland has repeatedly invested in its front 7 and it shows. They held a Joe Burrow Cinci team to 17 and even though they gave up 41 to the Ravens, the offense continually set up Balt. on short fields (only one TD drive had to go more than 36 yards and two went less than 10).

Jim Schwartz has always shown well as a DC against the Packers...just not as a HC.

Fitzgerald was not bad as a Kraft lite, but he can’t block well. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a true blocker on days like yesterday. LaFleur tries to use players who aren’t and thus takes away a weapon for not much improvement adding to the overall ineffectiveness of the O.

Nothing we saw yesterday on the O is new this year in terms of play or coaching weaknesses. LaFleur went in extremely conservatively and the Browns clearly anticipated his approach : he got trounced and couldn’t adjust and it wasn’t enough to score enough points despite another good defensive showing.

1. We didn't play Musgrave more because we have plenty of targets, we needed more blocking, and that's why Fitzpatrick was on the field instead of Musgrave.

2. Why didn't Brooks or Wilson play more? Because it means taking our best offensive player (Jacobs) off the field more. Wilson has a role, he's the backup, and he's good at it. Brooks hasn't really earned a role yet.

The fundamental problem yesterday is we did not get people blocked, and when you don't get people blocked, you're not going to have a lot of success on offense.

Don't be distracted by one special teams play. We didn't get people blocked AND we got called for quite a few penalties. That was enough to snatch defeat from jaws of victory.

“ Gary had 3 solo tackles, 3 QB hits, 2 sacks, and 2 tackles for loss. “.

And, so many said he was washed up and that was after he made the pro bowl. He’s not elite, but he is very good DE/OLB and will probably make the pro bowl again.

He was a good draft choice, it was a wise choice to extend him, he's mostly stayed available and he plays well for us, pass and run. Next year, he'll make a about $2M more than this year. Then in 2027, it goes to about $31M.

Would you rather spend that money on him, or Rashid Walker? My theory is that good OTs are more valuable than good DE/Edge types, so if you followed that, it would make more sense to keep Walker than Gary next year, and trade him.

So Parsons gets more snaps than anyone else on the D-line. The guy had no preseason to speak of so why not rotate him out and keep him fresh for the end when they needed him. I saw him on the bench during crunch time and he was totally gassed. Total clueless use of personnel.
Also, Gute, please put Banks and Tom on IR to prevent Flower and his gang from rushing them back and damaging them more?

Feel bad for Josh Jacobs. Running between the tackles in Green Bay is tough sledding. If we want a championship offense this coaching and O-line need to do much better. Playing against good D-lines has exposed this over the last decade. Our offense is one dimensional and it shows.

As for Jordan Love he needs to put the leaders cape on and win these games. Bad decisions and poor throws at the crux of a game keeps repeating and has us wondering. Matt Lafleur covering for him is weak - sorry.

The Packers actually seemed to be moving the ball against Cleveland by throwing quick and on rhythm...but they couldn't keep it up over longer drives. Pressure like Cleveland brought--and the Packers have brought against other teams--is designed to sack the QB or force him into quick decisions that simplify the game for the DBs and generate TOs.

"If we want a championship offense this coaching and O-line need to do much better. "

We were crossing our fingers on the OL depth coming into the season, and trading for Kinnard I think amplifies the fact that the Packers were unsatisfied, too. The worst thing that can happen to just about any NFL team is injuries in the trenches, and the Packers are dealing with that now. Cleveland was particularly well equipped to attack that.

All true Dobber and all point to the fundamental weakness of this O-line. If you can't run the ball and keep teams with good D-lines from breaking your offense, then the ceiling is set. At this point and with the current injuries, O-line prospects the coaching will be under a very bright spotlight.

THAT was a Cleveland Steamer. I hope that months from now, we'll look back on this as an anomaly.

10 points isn't going to get it done. It didn't get it done in the playoffs last year, it didn't get it done yesterday, and there's no reason this offense should be held to 10 points.

THE GOOD NEWS is that this was one of the least important games on the schedule. On the road, against an AFC opponent. That's about #16 or #17 on the importance scale. Still, this is a game the Packers should have won, but they gave it away.

If we score 10 points against Dallas next week, we're going to be 2-2.

We talked about this being a trap game last week. A game that won't mean much if they win because they're supposed to, but they better not lose. We knew this was going to be a tough D.

It will be hard for the D to keep up giving only about 13 points if they still lose and are on the field so much.

Has Luke Musgrave officially been relegated to TE3? In three games so far this year, he's been targeted a TOTAL of 3 times. Considering that blocking has never been his strong suit....and you only get targeted 3 times in 3 games as a receiving TE, when there is no injury that we know of, something is going on.

In this game at least, he seems to have fallen behind Fitzpatrick.

They desperately needed someone to block Cleveland guys. Musgrave isn’t that guy. There was no way he was going to get a lot of snaps in this game.

While I don't dispute that, my point was that he's barely been used at all through the first 3 games. This doesn't seem to be just a one game decision at this point.

The #1 quality that Green Bay desires, after availability, is they want a guy at that position who can get his man blocked. We have plenty of guys who can catch passes, and if you want to be one of them, you're going to have to be able to get your man blocked. Kraft has shown that he's that guy.

We threw 25 passes. Targets are like gold nuggets. Who should get more? Kraft? Doubs? Wicks? Golden? Williams? What about when Watson returns?

Cream rises to the top. We'll sort out what works best for us with the guys we have. IMO, if we're only throwing 25 passes/game, I'd much rather that most those be shots downfield instead of dinking and dunking. But only if we can protect our QB, which we didn't yesterday.

The TE usage will be determined by the Ds we face and game situations, won't they? There will be stretches of games where the TEs might catch as many as half the passes along with the backs. especially if we get more redzone opportunities.

I don't mind some dink and dunks if it gets some first down and keeps the ball in the Packers' hands for long drives that end in TDs.

Get a chisel and a stone.

'''' I expected Jenkins to provide a significant improvement over Josh Myers, but that boost just has not materialized.''''

But, but, but, we got rid of the weakest link. PFF says so.

If you've had the opportunity to watch the Jets, Myers is rarely responsible for negative plays. But yeah, I thought Jenkins would be better, and I thought Banks and Tom would be on the field, too. In any event , I thought it was a bad day for our Oline, and our Oline hasn't had a lot of bad days the past couple of seasons, not even when they only had 3/5 of an offensive line, not even when they've had to play weak links. Of our past 50 games, this was a bottom 5. I'd expect we'll get better.

Leatherhead Rule #4: Nothing good happens on offense unless people get blocked.

It's still early in the season and we're dealing with injuries to two starters. That's not a permanent situation.

Let me ask this question: If the Packers were going to go 1-1 on this little road trip before the break, would you rather have them lose in Cleveland or Dallas? Yeah, I thought so. All the morose doomcasting will be forgotten if we win next week in Dallas. It's a more important game than Cleveland was, by virtue of it being in conference.

Until they get the blocking fixed, we're going to have to take measures to protect Love unless we'd like to lose him for about six games or so. IMO, this is going to mean leaning on Jacobs and Wilson, and just not throwing very much.

On that point, the Packers have throw 78 passes in 3 games, a 26 attempts/game average. In 17 games, that would be 442 attempts, fewer than last year when we threw less than most teams. Yesterday, we were 18 for 25. Jacobs was targeted 9 times and he and Wilson combined had their number called 31 times. This is an RB driven offense, and RBs need blocking, even if they're Csonka, or OJ, or Dickerson.

We can't let Love get sacked 5 times again....that's just playing with fire and asking to get burned.

I see that Kinnard only played 4 snaps.

IIrc, he played well the first game but in game 2, we put in Belton first for a lot more snaps than Kinnard which to me was surprising as I thought he played very well in the first game.

Was I wrong about that first game? I don't think I was.

And now it appeared that when Tom went out early, he was replaced by a third guy--Morgan. Very confusing to me.

Further thoughts anyone?

My thoughts are that they better get some backups that are comfortable with the spot they're backing up and the guys around them. It looks like musical chairs out there. I thought that was what spring training and camp ironed out.

It is past time to drop the narrative that the Packers are cautious about putting players out there when they are injured. I was surprised to see Tom activated just a couple days after he said it was difficult for him to run in a straight line. I don't know how anyone could've felt good about him playing.

Even with the injuries, the pass blocking was excellent in the first two games. Time will tell if game three was an anomaly or if this is who they really are when they are down a couple of starters.

Interesting point by TGR about whether it may not have been a good idea to have a separate playsheet for when Myles Garrett was not on the field. Maybe LaFleur overthought it. I think they also tried to rush to get plays off before Garrett could come back in. Maybe there's something to be said for just playing your best on every play and not being so preoccupied with a single defender.
