Packers 35 Steelers 25 Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Packers avoid becoming Aaron Rodgers' 32nd victim, with a dominant second half.

For the first time since 1970 (Bart Starr was the QB), the Packers leave Pittsburg with a win. After a half of football that ranked amongst the most frustrating that Green Bay has played all season (which is saying something), Green Bay followed it up with the most dominant all around half of football that we've seen from them since week 2.

The first half was, as we've been used to seeing from Green Bay, a slog. There were offensive line struggles, a cornerback getting picked on, special teams miscues, and a lack of overall cohesion. The Packers were lucky to enter halftime only down nine. The second half really seemed like the moment we've all been waiting for. It all came together. The defense was suffocating, the offense was surgical, and Primetime Packers are still undefeated in the spotlight this season.

This was a hard game to try to pick out individual players from, because the half to half swing was so positively impactful that it wiped out a lot of really, really sloppy performances in that first half (looking at Keisean...). This game will produce a lot of positive momentum moving forward, but it's on the team to make sure it's the second half team that continues to show up, not the first.

Game Balls

Jordan Love

I'm about to throw a whole lot of numbers at you. Ready? 29/37 on the night, along the way tying the franchise record with twenty consecutive completions (according to Next Gen Stats, those twenty passes had a 0.1% chance of all being complete). Three touchdowns, zero picks, 78.4 completion percentage, and a 134.2 rating on the night.

Last season's concerns of whether or not Love could produce effectively against man coverage have been convincingly shut down. Against the Steelers, Love went 13/17 for 232 yards (the most against man in a game all season) and three touchdowns.

On the year, Love has 1,798 yards, 13 touchdowns, and two interceptions, with a 112.8 rating. Four games with multiple TDs and no interceptions. Five games with a rating above 100, and five games > 70 completion percentage. Love may have entered a serious bid into the MVP conversation.

Tucker Kraft / Christian Watson

Kraft certainly understood his assignment, as the closing act of National Tight End Day. Seven catches on nine targets, two touchdowns, and 143 yards, 130 of which came after the catch, the third most by a tight end since 2016. Have a day, young man.

Kraft YAC n' cheese (I'm going to make this a thing, damm it) just announced his all-pro candidacy to the entire league. He's been absolutely electric all season long, as a receiver and a blocker. With the increased spotlight will come increased from defenses, but the Packers' offense is well set up to adjust appropriately.

Meanwhile, wasn't it just so refreshing to see Christian Watson back in the fold? He's the straw that stirs the drink. From getting dirty in the run blocking game, to creating space for Kraft to exploit, and coming down with a couple of deep balls, his one year extension already looks like even more of a steal than it did a few weeks ago.

The Defense

While the offense may have had a slow start to the game, the defense actually had an extremely strong game, start to finish. In the first half, it came in the form of holding the Steelers to long field goals. Give Chris Boswell credit for going three of three on them, but his attempts were from 56, 50, and 48. "Bend but don't break" defense gets a bad rep (and we Packers fans certainly have a horrible past with them), but this is an example of it working out. As it is, there are a few "mini game balls" that I feel the need to hand out.

  • Carrington Valentine - Following a week of frustration and angst surrounding the cornerback position, Valentine may have made his claim to a starting spot on the outside for the rest of the season.
  • The Linebackers - Before the game, I predicted that the linebackers would be the most important unit on the field in this game. I saw the Steelers' run game heating up, their love of heavy TE usage, and Rodgers' quick passing game, and how together they would have to be dealt with primarily at the second level of the defense. Quay Walker and Edgerrrin Cooper stepped up in a major way.
  • The Pass Rush: Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary led the way in shutting down the Steelers' offense in the second half.

Lame Calls

Slow Starts

Over the past three games, the Packers have averaged only 7.7 points in the first half. That might be working for now, but the team will need to start aggressively searching for first half points over the second half of the season. My pet theory is that these slow starts are intimately linked to a lack of run game success, but I'd also be curious to hear why the Packers are choosing to defer kickoffs this season instead of going for points right off the bat.

Special Teams... Mostly

Two missed field goals, more penalties, more chaos at punt return... We're still on Mr. Bisaccia's Wild Ride.

The returner thing is the most confusing to me at this point. Keisean Nixon started the game as the punt returner, muffed the first punt that came his way and then.... just didn't take any more punts? The all-Pro kick returner seems willing to once again do some return duties, so why punt returners? And why, again, was the punt returner yanked after the first mistake? Romeo has actually done a good job in the role, but the process is head scratching at best.

By the way, the special teams gets a "mostly" because they did an excellent job of kickoff coverage duties.

Rashan Gary

Rashan played a excellent game, but he made an uncharacteristically rookie mistake, one that the Packers should know better than anyone not to do. He mocked the belt. Maybe the Packers are immune? Either way, probably not something needed to be tested out.

Three and Out

-- Today's phrase of the week is: "Slow and steady wins the race". I really appreciated the team's patience in this week's performance. For the second week in a row, the team needed to stage a second half comeback on the road, but the difference was in the team's attitude. Green Bay was able to learn it's lessons from the first half, make those adjustments, and dominate from that point.

-- Offensive tackles Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom were the only two Packers to leave the game with injuries (EDIT: Nick Nieman also left the game, and appears to have suffered a pectoral injury).Tom had his ankle stepped on by Jordan Morgan late in the game, but was able to return to, and finish the game. Rasheed Walker left much later, and Anthony Belton finished the game at left tackle in his place. We'll keep a close eye on those two this week, but hopefully the Packers' newfound stability on the offensive line can continue. And though he played in this game, I wonder if Josh Jacobs' injury was worse than the team let on.

Devonte Wyatt and Christian Watson returned from injury, and had massive effects on their respective sides of the ball. Kicker Brandon McManus also returned to the starting lineup, though they'll be more questions about that decision. His two missed field goals did not end up costing the Packers, but you have to wonder if he truly was healthy enough to make that return.

-- The Packers have a date with the Carolina Panthers next week, and the biggest story line to watch on the Carolina front will be the status of QB Bryce Young. Whether he plays or not, the Packers will be looking to defend their unbeaten streak in Lambeau this season. I think it's okay to be frank here: this is a game the Packers should win. There's no reason this game needs to be a repeat of the Browns, Bengals, and Cardinals game. The Packers need to avoid playing down to their level of competition once again, and put their opponent away convincingly.

The Packers are unbeaten at home this year and I don't think that will change against Carolina. A win would leave the Packers at 6-1-1 near the mid point of the season and in good shape for a showdown with the Eagles at Lambeau. I'm probably getting ahead of myself here, but this team has a chance to be very good.

Game Balls: Jordan Love, Tucker Kraft and the whole defensive front seven. They all played really well.

Lame Call: Just LaFleur's play calling in the first half. On the first drive of the game the Packers were very successful with lateral passes and letting their playmakers run after the catch. Didn't see those plays again until the second half when the Packer offense again exploded using the same plays. What was LaFleur thinking in the second quarter?

A good win against a division leading team.

I'm with you on the play calling. I understand the general concept of scripting your first X number of plays to test how the defense reacts to what you want to do, but when you find something that works really well, toss the script out and hammer what's working. You can always go back to the script after rolling up a bunch of points. IMO, that's LaFleur's biggest fault as a play caller - he sticks to the plan too much.

Play calling was fine.

People need to understand that no play call is a stand alone item. You are setting things up and showing things to the defense even if the play "doesn't work," and if it doesn't work it doesn't mean it was a bad call. And sometimes even bad calls work. Or you're waiting for specific circumstances or conditions from the defense. And there is certainly no guarantee that "good calls" later in the game would have worked in the same way if the ealier calls had been made differently.

I agree wholeheartedly. There is a famous military quote that applies here - "No plan survives first contact with the enemy". LaFleur is oblivious to this concept evidently. 3rd and 1 on the first possession. Jacob's had gotten four yards on the first running play before. WHY wouldn't he run the ball? But, admittedly, he did make adjustments in the 2nd half. I guess that's progress. But I feel his inconsistent play calling is what is keeping our offense from being really scary!

The first half touchdown drive was accomplished with tempo. LaFleur immediately abandoned it, why? I assume Detroit noticed the Steeler's success with that heavy package and stretch plays.

Game ball for me was NBC getting Aaron Rodgers screaming "cock-sucker" when the Steelers didn't go for it on 4th and 4 and then subsequently re-running it later in the telecast.

Game: Cooper had a very good, if unheralded, game.

Lane: Even though GB benefited, how in hell do the officials miss that defensive offsides. Usually officials throw the flag like it was on fire, but not that time.

I was thinking it was a makeup for the fumble forward pass that didn't go forward but straight down and even if it was intentional should have then been treated like a lateral or dropped handoff. Maybe it was the actual definition intentional grounding? He wasn't out of the pocket, the ball didn't reach the line of scrimmage, and there was no receiver in the area.

I totally agree that it could have been let stand as a lateral/fumble. But, the ball landed less than two yards from the running back so it wouldn't be intentional grounding.

There was a running back right in that area, who would’ve been an eligible receiver. So there was a receiver in the area. It was just in front of the grounding/pass/fumble

Maybe the Refs were considering it Payback for when the Steelers' had the obvious False Start and no flag was thrown. Both were blatantly obvious, and as pissed as Rodgers was, he must have (conveniently) forgotten that play!

Yeah the missed offsides was bizarre, in the same way that the missed and equally blatant false start from PIT was bizarre. The snap pratically hit the pulling guard in the backfield...

Yeah, with the FBI investigation of widespread corruption on betting on the NBA...makes you wonder what might have bled into the NFL. Also makes you wonder how Gov. Pritzker won $1.4 Mil playing blackjack over a weekend in Las Vegas. "Have fun, make some money...just keep our 'business' thriving in Chicago."

So much money on the line every game...can officials be bought off? Why are they different from any other human that has been corrupted in every other profession?

Know how you make $1.4 M in Vegas, you lose $2M. Pritzker is an inherited wealth person. Each of his siblings inherited 1.4 Billion, and that money has not sat idle.

Winners tell jokes. The losers say deal.

I was watching the ball right before the snap and the Steeler's center was twitching the ball...I think there could have been a illegal movement call on the center before the Packers were about 1 foot offsides.

Having Watson back really helps. His blocking has been sorely missed. He absolutely destroyed two players on blocks that helped spring Kraft and Jacobs for TDs were beautiful. On the Kraft one he blocked his guy 10 yards down the field. The additional ability to be a legit deep threat only sweetens the pot.

Doublej, " His blocking has been sorely missed." I have been hammering how CW's BLOCKING was missed for the entire time he was out. Can't agree more. Lots of plays last year where his down field blocking enabled long, long runs. What a great return game for him (not to mention some great long catches). "The Watson Affect" was evident last night!

Kalani did a good job of explaining the game last night. It's a Tale of Two Cities with this team. They will put together a whole game, but keep stacking those wins until then.
Only real comment is this, many on this board have been adamant about Kraft's use in this offense needed to be increased. Finally we see the shackles taken off. Now if anyone thinks Kraft did it alone , (sometimes it sure looked like he did) go look at those blocks he was getting from Watson! This offense is explosive and when everyone is back to at least 80% they will be a force of nature.
The kicker needed another week of rest and one more CB needs to step up or be brought in.
I guess that's more than one comment.

"We've just got to find ways of getting him the ball."

Ya think Coach Matt? I mean, with Watson, Golden on the perimeter and Doubs and Jacobs producing in the middle and on check downs...it can be easy to overlook "Kraft YAC and Cheese" (that's good Kalani!). But don't do it coach! I agree with Kalani the offense needs to run through Tucker early and often. I notice that historically, the top NFL teams have "a go" to TE like Gronk and Taylor's fiancé. It is rare a lower tier team has a top tier TE.

Tucker is kind of like Parsons on the D...he makes the other skill players better. Feed the man...feed him!

Bo Melton in coverage made one excellent play: he was the first to arrive at their returner and immediately made a solo tackle without allowing a single yard after contact the way I saw it. This was the only really good play from ST that I saw.

2 for 2 on FG I'll let slide since it didn't cost us the game. Lots of speculation here that McMoney isn't yet recovered from injury; I'll point out none of us know that, we just know he missed a couple last night. Hopefully he gets back to his excellent self in GB so far but it will be interesting to see what Gutey does at this position. I think we need a DT and CB and could trade away Heath and Wicks and be a better team for it this season.

I know it was billed as Rodgers revenge game but this was Jordan Loves torch game. I am glad that Love was able to definitively state that the Packers are his team and show everybody his meddle. Still a lot of work in progress on that O-line and in the play calling but a solid win against a solid team. Would like to see us unleash some of the WR team speed in this offense. It would go a long way in opening up the field for everybody

Knowing some random information about a player isn't the same thing as actually being good about saying things that are happening on the field. Way too often Collinsworth makes some moronic comment about a play and then you see the replay and realize he must have been drunk to say that.

My issue is that he won't let the game breathe. He just is so over-caffeinated that he never shuts up.

I usually mute him, but i turned the sound up to hear about that end zone reversal. He was right, the NFL had no business reversing that call on the field. If there's a challenge system they need to rely on it, not remake it haphazzardly. The call on the field was incomplete. Steelers had no challenge. If it was an "obvious error" why didn't the officials themselves reverse it.

I like Collinsworth too. Sometimes his cadence is annoying when he really gets into some issue that he's on, and so happens not to be that important to listeners. But he is very knowledgeable....and I learn a lot in game time by his commentary...and can easily overlook any small qualities.

It didn't impact the game, but I find the "Review Assistance" to be lame. No timeouts and thus no ability to challenge, no worries the League has got you. Their explanation why it was allowed to me didn't make any sense. Teams have to use their challenges all the time on plays that look "obvious" and what is considered a catch hasn't been obvious in this league in over 20 years.

Why couldn't Review Assistance been used on obvious defensive offsides or illegal procedures for the tush push to correct "obvious" wrongs?

The league having the ability to intervene at will (or not) adds more confusion and ability to manipulate the score.

Yeah, Thrilla!
Earlier in the day the league made a huge mess out of something, I think in the Bears game, when they in some way allowed two different things to be challenged on a play that shouldn't have been allowed to be challenged at all. Can't remember the details now, bit it was a farce and a mess!
To me, they're just admitting that their Refs are not good enough.

I don't think the Packers were "lucky" to be down only 9 points after the first half. They missed two field goals while the Steelers made two 50-plus field goals. I felt that the first half was played pretty evenly and that there was a decent chance the Packers would come back and win the game.

Agreed: neither team was all that consistent offensively in that first half.

The McManus miss from 50+ in the first half staked the Steelers to possession at almost midfield. They sputtered for a couple minutes, then kicked a long FG.

I am with you...my wife said at halftime the "Packers look like they going to get beat by Rodgers." I said I did not think so...that the 2 missed FGs clouded the fact they were holding serve with the Steelers. I felt confident they'd respond.

Now, I admit the response far exceeded those expectations...but Love, Kraft, Watson and the D were in zone in the 2nd. That was one of the best halves of the season.

I would assume the Packers are deferring on on the kickoff for the same reason everyone else does, for the chance to have back to back possessions to end the 1st half and start the 2nd. I think it is the right move and I would do it every time.

I love how if something isn't working it must be the play calling according to the fans. Couldn't be the players poor execution, it is always the play calling. Of course that fan was at practice all week and saw what the team did well and what they struggled with. I guess the right play call is the one that works every time. Teams pay their QBs all that money so the right plays are called, not for their execution.

"I love how if something isn't working it must be the play calling according to the fans."

It's the easy bell to ring these days. As you say: just about every play--executed well--is designed to move the football. People tend to forget that there are two teams out there on every play trying to execute. Pittsburgh is no pushover, as people were happy to relate all week.

I'm going to cut and paste your answer....and every time I hear that post about bad play calling I'll use your post. Well said. But....sometimes its true...there are sometimes MLF is opting for some high risk low probability plays when other plays might provide more options if D reacts a certain way to nullify it (like a run right up the middle on 3rd and 4) you either execute it or bust. Other plays give QB option to read and react.

but with the Steelers' defense ranking between 25th and 28th overall, 31st against the pass, and their 24th ranked Offense, I'll wait a couple more weeks to crown the Pack as SB contenders.

Agreed, buddy. There are real challenges ahead. But if that 2nd half team stays on the field, I fear potential future injuries a lot more than I fear upcoming opponents. That 2nd Half Packers team was that good.

But I will admit that one thing that would make me feel even more confident would be if they could wrangle a trade for a decent cornerback before the trade deadline. As long as they don't totally break the bank doing it, anyway.

We'll see. They seem to play better at home, but will have a tough run coming the next few weeks before they come to Lambeau. I don't think they win at Cinci next week, which could send their whole season into a funk.

When they don't force TOs, they lose. And they've been forcing TOs at an unsustainable rate.

Game Balls--
Evan Williams. Played well last night and was active. Williams' deflected pass saved a TD, but was negated by defensive penalty. Both Williams and McKinney were active in run support (see below).

Edgerrin Cooper. Active sideline to sideline. He's a beast. If he misses time, that will gut the middle of this defense.

Kingsley Enagbare. Didn't get the sacks, but penetrated and made some really nice tackles to cut off plays before they could get started.

Malik Heath. A couple key YAC first-down catches, and an important catch on the last drive of the first half that gave the Packers a chance to kick for points before time expired.

Momentum. Even though the Packers failed to convert that kick at the end of the first half, the offense really jump-started at that point after going 3 and out with a whimper on the previous two drives.

Lame Calls--
Run defense. Warren and Gainwell were regularly making the first man miss in the run game and snapping up yardage. That big front strung the Packers D out and allowed the RBs to regularly get to the edge. For some reason, Pittsburgh stopped going that way, even with a lead. First drive out of the locker room with a 9 point lead: Incomplete, short pass completion, incomplete, punt. Even their second drive (resulting in a long FG) was 5 pass, 1 run.

Keisean Nixon. Last week Hobbs was bad. Nixon had a terrible first half this week. He should've never been back returning punts--he has a sketchy track record of ball security on punt returns, and it popped up again. He bounced back and played better in the second half, but he cost the Packers time and time again.

Other Notes---
Christian Watson's first game back from injury? I couldn't tell. He played hard and made a difference. Now...to keep him upright...

The "Love Floater" passes have had 10 leading a charmed life since becoming the starter. He somehow gets defenders to completely lose sight of both the ball and the receiver on those, and ends up with big downfield plays. He got two of those last night, and they changed the complexion of the game. Have to think that at some point, the piper will need to be paid, but enjoy it while it lasts.

Never dump on a road win...especially against a decent team. Road wins are gold in the NFL, and the Packers went from 0-1-1 to 2-1-1 in the last two weeks. Some people with their Debbie downer narratives are already minimizing and pissing on this one.

Carolina comes to Lambeau next week and will likely be without Bryce Young, who has a high ankle sprain, and are missing most of their preferred OL at this point. They're hemorrhaging OL at this point. and the Packers defense should be able to push them around. Until yesterday, their defense has been pretty good, though.

The Bears lost. They lost to a desperate Ravens team that hasn't been able to stop anyone defensively and was playing a backup QB.
The Vikings got pounded on Thursday.
All-in-all, a pretty good weekend.

A big factor in the run defense was the RG injury for Pitt - the guy they were using as a second tight end (#74) was steamrolling DB’s and LB’s opening holes. After RG was injured, he moved to that spot and #81 become second tight end with less positive results. That seemed more a factor than the Pack front seven magically playing better in the second half.

Whether they just went away from it or the infamous "ARod audibling out of run calls" reared its ugly head, even with a lead, they played more 11 and 12 (without the extra OL) personnel and tried throwing it around instead of stressing the Packers' run D.

Only 3 called runs in the second half.

That 1st half was hard to watch! But, to his credit, LaFleur make adjustments. I thought Valentine looked very good - far superior to what we've seen from Hobbs. Nixon, however, probably had his poorest game this season. He allowed that first long pass behind him when the Steelers went up 3-0. He fumbled a punt. And the got burned a fair bit on his side. Love, Watson, Dodds and Kraft looked great! The Oline still looks subpar in run blocking, especially the interior of the line. GPG

I think the O Line will get better as they move to knowing each other on a first name basis, i.e. not out injured. Coordination of moving pieces is key.

To the author of this piece: Thank you, thank you, thank you for the correct use of the words "Dominant" (in the title) and "dominate" in the article. It's a pet peeve of mine that so many commentors say things like, "He was dominate!" :)

Up to well into the third quarter the game still looked tenuous. Credit Pittsburgh for being a tough team.

Love looked really good and never seemed rattled. It was one of his best performances but it wasn't perfect. I guess we just have to live with the footwork issues because when it works, it works. He was bailed out at times with a couple floaters. The first one to Kraft could have easily been wiped away with a penalty. Kraft did get away with a push off on that play and the catch saved the drive. The other floater to Watson was a fortunate catch. That ball was lofted into double coverage but Watson came down with it. Balls like that can easily be picked or knocked down as well. There was some luck riding on the side of the Packers with those two plays.

Can't say enough great things about Tucker Kraft. What a game for him!

Welcome back Christian Watson. So much for easing back into the game after that injury. He made some great catches and really provided some critical blocks. He has been missed.

Great job Emmanuel Wilson. When Jacobs wasn't getting all that much from the run game in came a fresh set of legs with Wilson and he started chewing up some yards with some really good runs. Wilson really helped change the look of the game at the right time.

Micah Parsons and company. Great pressure from the front and the pass rush. Great job from the linebackers, especially Cooper.

Carrington Valentine. I saw Nate Hobbs at the start of the game in introductions. I'm glad that's all I saw. Valentine had a really good game and showed he should be out there playing. How does Green Bay get out of this Hobbs experiment without it costing a fortune? Are the Packers stuck with an overpaid and limited cornerback for the next few years? Hobbs right now is in the lead for worst free agent signing this team has made in a long time. At least Jimmy Graham provided a little something.

Joe Johnson (DE) will probably go down as the worst GB free agent signing of all time.

Yeah, you're probably right about that but Jimmy Graham still sticks in my craw. Green Bay could have kept Jordy Nelson around on a team friendly deal but let him go over - money. Then they spend a boat load of money on Graham so he could buy some more airplanes and helicopters for his collection and he gave GB little in return. It's the Jordy thing that bothers me over the Graham signing.

Then there's the other human piece of garbage who I won't even mention who was in town for about a half of season. Sad he ever got to put on a Packer jersey.

I was cussing LaFluer after the first half and praising him after the second.
I get nervous when the Hoculi crew is officiating. They generally over-call every game, but they didn’t ruin us Sunday night.
Thrilled to have Watson return.
Tucker Kraft—9 man football—just like I played.
Did the secondary play better or am I seeing things?
Hats off to Wilson.
Go Packers!!!

Here is my overlooked game ball player. Devonte Wyatt. Did anybody else notice how small the Steelers' pocket looked? I think it was directly attributable to Wyatt's return. When he brings pressure up the middle the guards cant widen the pocket. Add a blitz from Quay or Coop and they have their hands full plugging the middle. It really shortens the path for Parsons and Gary. You didn't see them taking the wide circle route to get to a less than mobile QB. We need to sign him up long term.

Good point about the pocket looking small for Rodgers. It was like he was in that trash compactor in Star Wars. Wyatt must have had something to do with that.

The Padawan supplanted the Jedi Master last night.

I was growing tired of all the Rodgers hype playing the team where he earned 4 MVPs. I understand the writers hype and focus on Rodgers. He's been a HOFer for a while now.

But I have to say, Rodgers was all class last week, leading up to the kickoff, during and after the game. And his mentoring of Love has been invaluable.

Game ball. It always starts up fromt. Zach Tom and company. In a game of two future HOF pass rushers and game wreckers 1 showed up the other was neutralized.

Game Balls all around:
Some quick takes:
Kraft is a BEAST
Watson's BACK.
Heath and Wilson can contribute
O-Line not 60s quality but gave up 0 sacks. Get healthy.
D-Line held up well.
Pass rush stymied AR12 almost all night.
Doubs=his usual Donald Driver AND rescued us from muffs.
And Love is the QB we all hoped he would be. He took the red pill.
