Packers Stock Report: Week 9
Who made the week nine stock report after a 34-17 win against the 49ers?
The Green Bay Packers won handily over the San Francisco 49ers in week nine. Thanks to Aaron Rodgers’ four touchdowns and 173 receiving yards from Davante Adams, the Packers scored 34 points. For the most part, the defense held up against a banged-up Niners offense allowing 17 points. Green Bay will accept the win, however, in all likelihood, the game would have been much different had San Francisco been even a little healthier.

Buy
Davante Adams
It would be hard to argue anyone else as the top wide receiver in football. Adams is coming off a 173-yard and one-touchdown performance against the defending NFC Champion. Whatever the 49ers threw at him, Adams beat it. He’s currently second in the NFL in touchdowns with eight after having missed two games with a hamstring injury. If not for missing two games, Adams would be on a historic pace in 2020. In six games this year, Adams’ totals are 53 receptions, 675 yards, and eight touchdowns. At this rate, Adams is on track to be named to his first All-Pro team.
Elgton Jenkins
The early returns on Green Bay’s 2019 second-round pick keep on giving. Jenkins has had an up and down second season, but he came up huge for the Packers in week nine. Jenkins took multiple snaps at three different positions after injuries forced the team into shuffling the offensive line. Not many players can fill in at left tackle, left guard, and center and hold their own. Nonetheless, do it in the same game. Jenkins’ versatility continues to impress as Green Bay may have found a gem they can plug in almost anywhere along the offensive line.
Za’Darius Smith
Smith was able to exploit backup left tackle Justin Skule for most of Thursday’s game. He hurried quarterback Nick Mullens on multiple occasions and later forced a strip-sack in the second half. Smith would also go to recover the football after a long season in which Green Bay’s defense has struggled to force turnovers. Smith was impactful all over the field against the 49ers, even stopping running back Jerick McKinnon at the line of scrimmage on a play during the third quarter.
Billy Turner
Like Jenkins, Turner had to play multiple positions after Rick Wagner was ruled out with a knee injury. Turner played left and right tackle and did a nice job protecting Rodgers. Rodgers was sacked one time and hit five, but for the most part, operated from clean pockets. In six games this season, Turner has played 171 snaps at left tackle in David Bakhtiari’s absence. While he hasn’t played at the same level as the All-Pro, he has done a solid job helping the offense keep rolling.
Oren Burks
Burks played 34 snaps in the 49ers’ game and led the team with six tackles. He was caught out of place in coverage a few times, but Burks did a solid job against the run. He finished the game with one tackle for a loss, which came on a run call for JaMycal Hasty to the right end on the first drive of the third quarter. Starting inside linebacker Krys Barnes exited the game with a calf injury and then later tested positive for COVID-19. If Barnes has to miss time, Burks could see an increase in his snaps.

Ka’Dar Hollman
Filling in for an injured Jaire Alexander is no easy task. That’s exactly what Hollman had to do after the starting corner left with a concussion. Hollman played a total of 26 snaps and made a pair of tackles but missed another. The 49ers then scored a late touchdown after a miscommunication between Hollman and Stanford Samuels. The two appeared to get mixed up in coverage, and the mistake cost the defense a 41-yard touchdown.

It’s interesting to see burks on the buy list. Our defense needs fast decisive linebackers. It’s up to the players that we have to develop. My hope is that they do.

Holman may, or may not, have been the one responsible for coverage area errors, but I though that for a player getting his first meaningful playing time he otherwise did well. Slightly ridiculous to look at those kind of mistakes for a player in his position as dispositive. Barnes has made plenty of similar errors, but we accept them as growing pains. Same with Hollman. It looks like he can cover, I see that as an upside. As the 4th perimeter CB getting first real usage I’d say he is a positive.
Sell would be Lowry.
Interesting assessment of Burks. Is he finally getting trust or will he be buried on the depth chart by Martin and Kirksey, even Burgess as he picks up the scheme, if Barnes is sidelined?

Sell = Darnell Savage - bad angles, missed tackles and doesn't seem to like hit anyone.

Savage is more of a hold. He did played better against SF.

I have Savage below Randall, and Ha Ha Dix. Strong Sell- before he turns into Josh Jones. Gary. I'm ready to put him back on the DL. - Sell . Martin Strong Buy. Opportunity is knocking on his door.

Both safeties are playing out of position. Amos should be the one near the line of scrimmage and Savage playing deep safety. Because GB does not trust savage at deep safety they have been switched. Savage is too small playing in the box and Amos strength is in the box and maybe too slow for deep safety. Savage needs to learn how to play deep safety or he will never realise his potential and be a liability playing in the box

I'm not unhappy with Amos. But Savage needs to be nearer the line. I prefer King back Deep. He's done a great job when they move guys around.

Sell: Mike Pettine. During the first half, there were multiple times the Packers defense seemed unsure of where they were supposed to be, who they were responsible for covering, and seemed to be caught flat footed several times. Eventually, this was remedied, but the defense still showed little to no ability to hold the edge of the line, allowing third string RB's to look respectable. Would a new DC solve all these problems? Maybe not, but the team has to do something, because the defense is regressing, not improving.

Didn’t this “unsure, flat-footed” defense hold the 49ers to 3 points in the first half? On the road?
The angst over this defense is misplaced. Virtually all the coaches and players from last year’s #9 scoring defense returned. We had no preseason, we had Clark and Kirksey and King out, we faced two HOF QBs driving high octane offenses...on the road. We’ve had Cook twice and Kamara once. We kept a powerful Atlanta offense in check.
The net result is that we’re 17th in scoring defense. Now, we get some weaker offenses and that ranking will improve.

Right, the defense held SF to3 points in the first half. It takes something to hold Garropolo, Kittle, Mostert, Coleman, Samuels,, and Aiyuk to 3 points in a half. Oh wait..........

I buy this offense. This is a top offense run by a top QB. They are a legitimate threat to put 30 or more up every game...kind of like Jordan. They will win until/unless they are stopped. They almost never turn it over. They rarely punt, or miss FGs. The QB is rarely hit, or sacked. I love this kind of stuff.
Sell: The notion that Pettine isn’t smarter than a bunch of people on a fan board. Because he is much smarter, and he’s doing a solid job. LaFleur and Pettine are 19-5 together and you want to break that up? Sheeeesh.

I believe you nailed it concerning the offense, but disagree regarding the D. I do not believe I’m smarter than Pettine, however, a glaring weakness has been exposed; I don’t need to say what it is. Who’s responsibility is it to fix it, mine, other packer fans, or Pettine?

We played and beat a team that was dealing with a significant amount of injuries and pandemic like the rest of the league. There are no “gimmies” in this league we enjoy. People tend to forget we have a lot of young, ascending talent on our roster that has been thrust into pretty heavyweight roles at this point in the season. A little grace and gratitude for these men trying to do their jobs and make a statement for themselves and their families. We are doing well. Let’s be thankful for what we have at our leisure and all that is at risk in these times of peril. And thank you to all of our Veterans. Go Pack!

Unsure if Pettine needs to go or not. Read we lead the league in missed tackles and I’ve watched many times where our defense was in position and missed the tackle. Not Pettine’s fault if he has called a good defense and a tackle, or two, is missed which allows a positive play. But just like Capers he drives me nuts with his three man rushes allowing QBs plenty of time to find an open receiver. He s supposed to be a master of disguised rushes but seldom see that. When healthy we have excellent cover corners so what’s up with the soft zones? Third and two and our corners are eight yards off the line?
