Packers DB Damarious Randall Making Big First Impression

Packers rookie first-round pick Damarious Randall is making a big impression early in training camp

Green Bay Packers rookie first-round defensive back Damarious Randall is catching the eyes of the coaching staff and fans.  He should, considering that he's this year's first-round draft pick.  Still, when Randall was taken late in the first round, some wondered if general manager Ted Thompson wasn't just unable to make a trade and had to pick someone at that spot.  There weren't many expecting Randall to go that early in the draft and then there was the matter of his being a safety on a team that needed cornerbacks.

The Packers quickly announced that Randall would get a shot at converting to cornerback, as they already had a good stable of safeties in Morgan Burnett, Sean Richardson and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.  Although first-rounders tend to carry more confidence in their new team and fan base, the idea of converting a college safety to corner (even though Randall had played plenty of corner in the past), was still a bit unsettling.  At the start of the team's rookie camp in early May, Randall was held out with an ankle injury.  He missed some early valuable time on the field to learn what he had been digesting in the meeting room.  And with the Packers injury history over the past few seasons, some held their breath that this wouldn't be a long-term issue for Randall.  It wasn't.  He immediately impressed the coaching staff with his ability to pick up the defense and be around the ball more often than not.

Training camp started a week ago and Randall's name has been mentioned almost every day.  With veteran Casey Hayward having missed time while healing from foot surgery and with rookie Quinten Rollins out with a hamstring injury, Randall saw increased time during the first part of camp.  He's been around the ball often and has multiple interceptions so far.  He's also spent time on special teams.

Before the team began offseason workouts and practices, it was Rollins who was getting most of the love as the rookie most likely to make an impact right away.  Randall had question marks around him and there weren't many sold on what he would bring to the Packers defense.  With each passing day, he's turning doubters into believers.  Those doubters had and have a right to be hesitant.

Over the last four drafts, Thompson hasn't exactly hit it out of the park often.  In 2011, the team drafted offensive lineman Derek Sherrod, who suffered a horrific leg injury late that season and never fully recovered.  He's not even on the roster anymore.  In 2012, it was linebacker Nick Perry, another player the Packers worked to convert from defensive lineman to linebacker.  Perry has battled injuries and hasn't been able to establish any consistency.  He flashes once in a while but seems to be under the gun in 2015 to prove his worth or head out of town.  2013's first pick was defensive lineman Datone Jones who, like Perry, hasn't shown what the team and fans were hoping for.  A one-game suspension to start 2015 won't help, but the Packers are counting on Jones to return and become a big part of the rotation up front.  Last year, Clinton-Dix was the pick and he turned into a solid starter at safety by season's end.  A brilliant performance for the first three quarters of the NFC championship game made a winner out of Thompson with the pick.  Randall looks to make it two years in a row.

Preseason games will start soon and Randall will have a chance to flash his abilities against guys in other jerseys.  He's certainly not in any danger of not making the roster this season, but he's already surpassing the expectations of many and a big contribution from the former Arizona State standout would provide a huge boost to a team that already has many solid pieces in place.  And with Burnett eventually coming due for another contract, Randall could prove to be a top candidate to move back to safety and infuse the position with more youth.  It's too early to call that a certainty, but he seems to be that type of verstaile player who can do whatever the defense needs of him.  And let's not forget he's facing some of the best competition on the other side of the ball every day in receivers Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.  That can't hurt.

As I've said before, Randall has the intangible in that he understands that he'll only get so far on his ability alone.  He realizes that he has to prepare and understand the defense mentally and translate it to plays made on the field.  He knows guys are fighting for jobs and playing time and that he's not going to get a ton of help during the preseason.  It sounds like another high-character guy ready to forge his way onto another successful Packers team.  Randall is likely hoping he becomes the answer to the trivia question about who the Packers drafted in the first round when they won their latest Super Bowl in 2015.

Should Randall continue on to have a solid freshman season in the NFL, he could in line to join the likes of former Packers defensive backs who made an early splash and had successful careers with the Packers.  Guys like LeRoy Butler, Tramon Williams, Nick Collins and Darren Sharper.  If the first week of camp is any indication, at least we know that the arrow is pointing up for Randall.

Ok, I held off as long as I could, but now I'm anointing him.

Lol. Still too early to anoint Randall.

Way too early for the author to suggest Richardson is a good safety, since he can only play a hybrid role designed to hide his inability to cover.

To the poster: Saying "a good stable of safeties" refers to the collective bunch. In no way does it single Richardson out.

Fair enough. GB does have a good stable of safeties in Clinton Dix, Burnett, Hyde, Banjo, and Richardson. We might see Gunter or maybe Randall at safety in the future.

It just seems to me that there is a lot of hype about Richardson that is less justified than the hype for some other prospects. Richardson at least will contribute to this team, perhaps only on STs, but perhaps in a package like the one Jay outlined in a previous article, or who knows, perhaps the light will go on for him and he will figure out how to cover receivers. I'd love to see Whitt teaching him coverage skills.

BTW, Jason, if you found my use of "the author" off-putting (hence your reply to "the poster", I meant no offense. I did it that way because I forgot who wrote the article and once I go to Add New Comment I can't go scroll up to check. My computer sucks or I'd open a new tab and check. I forced my IT son to spruce up my computer a few times, but he says it needs major hardware upgrades and he has now issued a DNR order on it - some nonsense about there being only so much one can do with SP2 or using Chrome with 512K RAM and old graphic cards, and hurting my computer's feelings by calling its motherboard a grandmother board. Sigh, like my computer I have good days and bad days. Anyway, he refuses to work on it anymore, but has offered to go with me to buy one or to build a computer for me. I have to say, my 28 yr old son built a kick gaming computer for his brother, age 14, for about $700, so maybe I'll wrench open my wallet if it is not rusted shut.

"grandmotherboard" LOL. Sound's like it's time to invest in something new Reynoldo. 512K of RAM doesn't cut it these days. With that much RAM you can time your page loads with a sundial. Your average laptop these days runs on 8GB of RAM, and many customized gaming rigs can go upwards of 12GB and beyond. The technology evolves so fast, it's hard to keep up.

I can't argue with that at all! Mostly because I'm not tech savvy enough. It did seem a little odd the way it was worded but the emphasis now shifts to your PC and hoping we don't have to "put it down"!

I'm reserving judgment until I see him in some game action. I particularly need to see whether his tackling is up to NFL standards.

Some criticized his tackling as a safety, but my guess is that his tackling will be plenty good for a CB.

Rollins is said to have a better smooth change of gears, while Randall generally had better combine figures, in particular, better shuttle times and a 10th sec faster in the 40 (4.46 to 4.57).

I particularly liked Rollins, even before the Pack drafted him, but I've become pretty comfortable with Randall as the top pick since the draft. If only the Packers could stockpile talent on the D line the same way they can at DB and WR........though perhaps that would just be unfair to the other 31 teams.

Totally agree with that. If Thompson could hit on another Daniels type player on the D-Line this team could win multiple Lombardi Trophies in the next 3 years.

2 Words: Malcolm Brown.

2 more words: Paul Dawson.

I fail to see how we're going t the 8 capable guys back there we already have on the field. (Burnett, HHCD, Shields, Heyward, Hyde, Randall, Rollins, Richardson)

Meanwhile, we've got CM3, Barrington and a bag of balls at ILB. Who knows what they young guys are going to do. And Raji and a bag of balls at NT. And Daniels and a bag of balls at DT.

I know TT drafts much better in the secondary than he does in the front 7. But dang.... Anywhere in the front 7 would have been welcome in May.

That said, if Randall and/or Rollins become 10 year starters - my point is moot.

I'm right there with you Bearmeat, more so with Malcom Brown than Dawson. Like you said, if Randell is here 10 years from now, has been a starter, and one we've not had to worry about then the pick was awesome. Something tells me though Malcom Brown is going to be a stud though.

Dawson on the other hand would mean we don't draft Montgomery, at least it would be doubtful he lasts to round 4. I think Dawsons combine numbers and his attitude at the combine scared a lot of teams away including the Packers.

I agree completely with Nick, and mostly with Bearmeat. My quibble with Bearmeat is that I don't think we can second guess TT when he passes on a player due to character issues since we weren't there at the interviews, etc. (I am assuming that TT passed on Dawson due to character and not because he did not like him as a player, but I could be wrong about that.) I'd have picked Malcom Brown, especially if you think he can play 3-4 DE, because I think he has a chance to be special and because we have a bunch of expiring contracts on the DL. That does not mean that Randall won't be a good player. I just had Brown one tier above Randall in the prospect rankings. Had we taken Brown since there was some depth at CB, we'd might be looking at Rollins, one of Nelson, Gaines, Shaw, (or some guy we never heard of, etc.), and Gunter as our prospects at CB. And it doesn't mean that TT hasn't brought in a good haul in the draft.

In today's video of one on ones, he's scrappy. Stays in the play, though he did give up the reception. Gunter and Hyde gave up steps - especially Gunter. I think Randall can play. The guy who looked really good today was Hayward. I hope they can somehow resolve his hamstring issue because he looks really good.

Hope Randall is as good as he appears so far, because I hate to say it; I have no faith in Hayward lasting the season.

Already reports about possible hammy issues with Hayward. And didn't Shields mysteriously fall down and not get up for two games last year?

Just get the feeling Randall's going to get a lot PT as the starting CB as the season rolls on.

Hence the Packers taking 2 CB's with the first 2 picks. Did a little "house" cleaning and good williams hunting and started fresh.

Sometimes the talent evaluators envision a position change and get it right. Here's hoping that Randall's career can hold a candle to converted RB Herb Adderley's.

The Packers have one of the best rosters in the league this year. Just think if that 4 year stint of crap 1st round picks had actually done anything?! Scary.

Or the 20 picks in 2011 and 12 netted more than Cobb, Daniels, Hayward, and Perry. Just think if those drafts produced the starters the 2013 and 14 drafts have, especially 2013. I would have loved to see what Franklin would have been able to do with Lacy, talk about a one-two punch!

5 years stint. Dix will "regress" this year. Probably won't be starting by years-end.

Franklin never had "it" either. That Cincinnati game was a fluke, a flash in an empty pan. Franklin wouldn't have made the team this year injury or not.

But I do actually think I was hearing a hint of objectivity on this thread. Very brave Nick and Bearmeat, very brave.

Randall may turn out to be a fine DB, but my gut tells me that Rollins is the 2015 draftee who will end up being the star DB.

Early on, Randall. 3 years in? Rollins will earn the bigger payday.

I love me a good defensive back. I dunno why I love it so much but I do. I guess cause the int can just completely "deflate" a teams offense. And just hand all that momentum over to AR. This is gonna be a good year I can feel it.
