Despite a dominant high school career at Shady Side Academy in New Kensington, Pennsylvania (100 total TDs and 3500 yards on offense and an all-conference player on defense), Skyy Moore was very sparsely recruited by colleges. As a three-star composite prospect, per 247 sports, he received interest from Howard, Rice, Robert Morris, and Western Michigan, settling on the fourth option. He was the 2348^th nationally ranked recruit, the 217^th CB recruit (though Western Michigan offered him as a WR), and 44^th overall Pennsylvanian recruit.

There was no developmental period for Moore coming out of high school—he started 12 of 13 games as a true freshman. On 706 offensive snaps in 2019, he recorded 51 receptions for 802 yards and a trio of scores. His receiving yard total was good for fourth nationally among freshmen. Following the season, Moore became the first Bronco WR to be named to the All-Mid Atlantic Conference first team since Corey Davis and was the first WMU receiver to do so as a freshman.

Like everyone, Moore experienced a truncated 2020 campaign due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. He appeared in five of six Bronco games that season, racking up 25 (5 per game) receptions, 388 (77.6 per) yards, and three more scores.

After two very productive seasons, Moore took his game to a new level during his 2021 junior season. In 13 games, he recorded more receptions (95), yards (1,292) and touchdowns (10) than his first two years combined. He was a top-14 receiver by yards in all of Division I football and top-10 by receptions during a truly outstanding year, firmly establishing himself as an NFL worthy prospect. Unsurprisingly, he was given another spot on the First Team All-MAC roster and was a dark horse Biletnikoff Award candidate for much of the year.

Although he was not on the roster of either draft prospect game (Shrine Game or Senior Bowl) after the season, Moore was invited to the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine after the season, where he was one of the event’s biggest winners. His 4.41 40-yard dash was a top 10 mark among receivers, and he had strong numbers in the three-cone and 20-yard shuttle drills. He is expected to be an early day two pick, with some experts mocking him late in the first round.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

• Three years of strong production.
• Does not shy away from contact—Moore plays bigger than his size.
• Shifty after the catch, with elite change of direction ability.
• Strong route runner who is particularly effective on “stop” routes.
• One of the more sure-handed WRs in this class. Moore did not drop a lot of passes in college.
• Awareness of zones, perhaps due to his background as a corner. He has a strong sense of where the openings in coverage are.

Weaknesses

• Undersized WR, measuring in at under 6’ and 200 lbs.
• He was shut down by Michigan when they played WMU in 2021, one of his few encounters with potential NFL defensive backs.
• Not much burst breaking routes—he may struggle to create separation against NFL DBs.
• Although he may be able to contribute as a returner, he doesn’t have experience doing so. In fact, he has next to no experience on special teams period and cannot be counted on to play in the third phase.
• Non-factor as a run blocking WR.
• Likely limited to the slot in the NFL with his size, despite outside usage at WMU.

Fit with the Packers:

My favorite comp for Moore as a prospect is Emmanuel Sanders. Both are undersized, good-but-not-great athletes who produced at a high level for multiple seasons at a Group-of-Five school. Many of their measurables at the combine were very similar (or identical, in the case of the 40). Sanders was a sure-handed slot option for most of his career, and I believe Moore has similar potential.

Unlike a number of analysts, I do not like Moore as a first-round pick, at least for Green Bay. While his film is very good and his measurables are solid, he does not fit the Packers’ usual model for receivers. Additionally, Moore’s projection as a player—a slot and gadget type of player—is somewhat filled in Green Bay right now, with Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers in that role. Although it would be nice to develop him, it’s hard to justify having three of those guys on the roster, especially when Moore is less than the ideal size (Cobb and Rodgers are both over 200 pounds). While he is an intriguing prospect, I think there are better options for Green Bay early in the draft, and I would not anticipate seeing Skyy Moore in the Green and Gold unless he falls into the third round.
