Report: RB Ty Montgomery Expected to Play vs. Vikings

After being listed on Friday's injury report as "questionable," there's nothing questionable about Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery's status for today's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Montgomery is expected to play and not be limited in any fashion. It'll be his second career game against the Vikings as the Packers' full-time running back, but that isn't to say he'll still end up splitting reps with rookie running back Aaron Jones.

Jones, 22, is coming off a monster performance in his first career start. He rushed for 125 yards on 19 carries against the Dallas Cowboys, along with a touchdown. Jones instantly made a case to see more work in the Packers' backfield.

Meanwhile, Montgomery was a full participant in practice all week after being on the tail-end of recovery for his broken ribs suffered in the Sept. 28 game against the Chicago Bears. He did, however, practice with a protective vest under his jersey the past week but it's unknown whether or not he'll need to sport it for Sunday.

The Packers can instantly form a two-headed rushing attack in their backfield with both Jones and Montgomery, and that's without including the other two rookie running backs from the Packers' 2017 draft class, Jamaal Williams and Devante Mays.

Many won't like it, but the Packers may very well revert back to giving Montgomery a heavy workload and allowing Jones to become a situational running back. But don't be surprised if they don't, as Jones won over a lot of hearts with his stellar play last weekend.

I'll be spitting nails if McCarthy starts an injured Montgomery over a healthy Jones.

Why do I have a feeling McCarthy not only will start Montgomery but OVER use him and the ribs end up in worse shape than when he entered the game. Jones SHOULD start and Monty should be used on 3rd downs or when GB wants to run the Hurry Up Offense.

I'm really surprised, especially considering Montgomery and his sickle cell trait, which makes him heal more slowly from injuries. Why risk him?? It's why we drafted 3 RBs!

Monty knows the complete Packer offense package. Jones does not. Not Jones fault, the CBA/short training camp strikes again. With Monty in the backfield, Rodgers can now run his complete set of checks from the line. Packers offense can go no huddle at any point with Monty back, and stress the Vikings D to the point they will break. I agree with Nick Perry about MM over using Monty, but the RB coach will make the call on who is out in the field, so it should be OK.(I Hope)

They must just want him to get some touches. Don't like it. Monty does so many things well. The risk is bigger than the rewards today.

I just cringe at the thought of taking a hit stretched out with broken ribs. Not to mention just having 250-300 lb men falling on you.

Just seems like there would be a risk this quick, but I don't think packers doctor would clear him otherwise, if it was a major or moderate risk.

I don't like putting Monty at risk, but his returns opens up the entire playbook for Rodgers and takes some pressure off of Rodgers to do everything. I would use Monty as a decoy to draw defenders to him and then run or screen pass the other way to Jones. Monty is a smart football player who knows how to protect himself.

If Monty comes out of the backfield on a pass play he will likely draw a safety or the slot CB to cover him. That should leave Adams or Jordy or Bennett one - on - one somewhere and Rodgers will be able to exploit that opportunity.

We have no choice but to trust that Monty, the Packers medical and coaching staffs know what they're doing. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Inactive for the Packers today...

M. Adams
A. Brooks
M. Burnett
D. House
K. King
A. Pankey
J. Thomas

If Bakhtiari is active, you can bet he's playing. The secondary is gutted today and no Brooks means that the Packers are going to rely on the DL and on guys like Fackrell and Odom to be generating pressure.

This doesn't set up well for the defense, even if Dalvin Cook and Stefon Diggs are out.

Vikes are down Bradford, Diggs, and Easton, as expected. Sendejo is also incactive, which is a boost to the Packers run game prospects.

Monty is an ok but nothing earth stattering running back. Ditto his pass catching and route running. The Pack love him because he can fill two roles and its less money.
Why you would sit a 120 yd running back to let Monty has his job back is beyond me. Go with the hot hand.
