The Checkpoints That Could Affect Packers-Jets Negotiations

Packers and Jets haven't found a resolution to the Aaron Rodgers saga

Former Green Bay Packers vice-president of player finance and current Sports Illustrated analyst Andrew Brandt perfectly encapsulated: “Leverage lies with the negotiating party that is most satisfied with the status quo”. That applies particularly to the Aaron Rodgers situation, in which the Packers and the New York Jets haven't gotten to an agreement to move the future Hall of Famer, one week after he stated his intention to play for the Jets.

There are, however, multiple key dates and checkpoints that could slightly affect leverage and potentially incentivize one side or the other to complete a deal. Therefore, let's list every event that can possibly change the negotiation flux.

3/26, Owners meeting
The meeting next week in Phoenix doesn't necessarily move the leverage, but it's an important event to keep an eye on because Packers president Mark Murphy and Jets owner Woody Johnson are going to be there. They aren't the main negotiators, however any talk between them has the weight to possibly finish the deal.

4/17, Offseason program
Rodgers hasn't been a constant presence in Packers past offseason programs, but Albert Breer reported that he could do it going to a new team to get to know the culture and his new teammates. The Jets would like to have Rodgers officially on the roster at this point, even though it's a soft deadline because this part of the program is limited to workout activities.

4/27, Draft
The draft is the first big deadline because it highly affects the trade compensation. If the deal isn't done until then, the Jets could only add future draft capital and players into the package. This is the best moment for the Jets to impose their leverage if the Packers want immediate draft capital to build around Jordan Love. If this date passes without a deal, Green Bay would have little incentive to finish the deal before September.

5/2, 5th-year option deadline
The Packers have to make a decision on Jordan Love's fifth-year option in the first week of May. If they exercise it, as expected, Love will be under contract through 2024, and his $ 20 million base salary next year will be fully guaranteed. At this checkpoint, it would be harder for the Packers to justify keeping both Rodgers and Love, because the cap ramifications for 2024 would be huge.

End of May, OTAs
The organized team activities would be a real point of contention, because then the Jets would absolutely want Rodgers on the roster. Based on NFL rules, Rodgers couldn't even have access to the Jets' playbook if the trade isn't official. Even though Rodgers knows the basics of Nathaniel Hackett's system, it would be imperative to study potential details and adjustments. Moreover, this is the first opportunity for Rodgers to practice with his new targets.

June 1st
For the Packers, June 1st is a big date. When a team trades a player, every dollar already paid that hasn't hit the cap immediately accelerates. However, after June 1st, the acceleration only happens in the following season. So, if Rodgers is traded between now and June 1st, the Packers will have $ 40.3 million in dead money this year, adding around $ 9 million of hit if compared to his current projection. If the trade is executed after June 1st, the dead money would be spread - just $ 15.8 million in 2023, and $ 24.5 million in 2024. That movement would create real flexibility for the Packers this season — they could use the cap, or rollover the unused money into 2024.

Training Camp
In July, real football begins. If there's no deal in place by then, things will have probably gotten ugly. The Jets would be worried without a plan B in place, and their quarterback in practice with the ones would be Zach Wilson. Rodgers could have the option to show up in Green Bay, but the parties would most likely agree to excuse him from the activities for several and obvious reasons, unless the Packers change their minds and really consider playing Rodgers once again.

Week 1, September
The start of the regular season is not only a big checkpoint because of the games themselves, but also for financial reasons. This is the projected deadline for the team to pay Rodgers' $ 58.3 million roster bonus. So the Packers would have to pay him, or the bonus would be transformed into base salary and entirely hit the cap in 2023 — an impossible scenario for Green Bay. So if Rodgers isn't traded by then, he would have to make a call: play for the Packers or retire. If he plays, Green Bay will have to decide who the starter will be. If he retires, he doesn't get the roster bonus.

Trade deadline
If Rodgers is on the roster and playing, the Packers probably wouldn't trade him during the season. But if he retires and decides to come back if the Packers and the Jets could find an agreement, a deal may get done by the Tuesday after week 8. In this case, Rodgers roster bonus wouldn't have been paid, but a reworked deal could be negotiated between Rodgers and the Jets to materialize the trade.

Realistically, it's unthinkable the negotiations are going to be dragged this long. Training camp seems to be the final real checkpoint. The Packers, the Jets and Aaron Rodgers want to get the deal done, so it makes sense for everybody at some point to sit together and cooperate instead of negotiating to extract everything possible out of the other party.

I still beleive the key issue is need and ya status quo may be another term for it. The Jets know they do not NEED Rodgers. They can live without him and go QB in the draft, bundle picks, find another QB or just use Wilson for another year and pick high next year. They have the status quo factor in the bag.
The Packers come May have a big problemo. You have to do a contract on Love and cant have Rodgers on the payroll too or your cutting a lot of players to get it done. They have status quo limited by time.

The Jets know they don't need Rodgers?? I'm not buying that after they suffered through last year with Zach Wilson. They realize that had they had even a decent QB they would have gone to the playoffs. They also know the position GB is in so it's a toss up. I do believe both teams benefit from getting it done so it's just a matter of getting together and being realistic. I would say if GB can't get the Jets 1st rd then it has to be their 2nd and a conditional 1st or 2nd rd pick in 2024.

I respectfully disagree, The Jets are all in on him and know with out getting him signed they will once again miss the play offs not to mention a SB. With Rodgers they know the team instantly becomes a play off team and SB candidate and so do the fans so if the front office cant get this done the NY fans will be demanding heads roll.

Exactly. I've got family there and that appears to be the consensus as well.

Looking at the dates Wendell listed, I literally stopped at 4/27! I don't see a scenario where the Jets are wanting this to go past the draft.

Personally, I think they're much closer to closing this than fans might think, and that the Owner's Meeting will play an important role in getting it done. Figure, they've been discussing details with the Packers for two years. At least. They know the lay of the land well enough to have all the "I'd" dotted & the "t's" crossed before 4/27 or earlier.

Quinnen Williams' deal still hanging out there to be completed might be driving this to a quicker resolution.

It's not like NYJ is sitting there loaded with cap space. They might be looking to move that #13 & # 43 to GB.

I'm starting to think the Packers want '24 1st rounder and the deal done after 1 June...

For all the reasons listed in the article.

It may be Gutey said, "We'll take your 13 and 43 this year or if we don't get that, we'll wait until after June 1st and we'll take your 1st and 2nd next year..."

IDK, but while Murphy is an idiot, I don't think Gutey is.

Eh... but, my point is the __ J E T S__ might be in a position where they can't afford to use their #13 and #43 picks, and having them both fit under the cap. Not with Quinnen Williams yet to be signed. And, then bring in Bakhtiari after June 1st.

Rodgers is going to want Bakhtiari.

I sure hope this is the case, as I'd much rather have #13 and #43 this year, than whatever their R1 is next year.

I mean, if the Packers can actually swing this, get both picks under their cap, which according to TGR's article would require essentially stretching every last bit of contract alterations to their limits, that herculean effort might pay big dividends.

How badly do we want those two top Jets picks in April?

I'd move heaven & earth to get all of it under the cap to be able to acquire both picks this year, and to clear AR off our books this year as well. The Packers should find themselves in a much stronger position then in 2024, when we might want to add a final FA piece or two for a legit run ourselves.

Just a thought.

Hey, I'm on your side gg... I'm just spit-balling here... Trying to figure out what the holdup is? It still seems as though they're dragging it out on purpose for some reason. Not sure what it is, but it may be nothing more than to announce it when the 13th pick is on the clock?

Jets fans would rock the house in KC if it happens that way!

Agree. Hell I stopped after the Owners meeting. Jet's fans will be in full pre-draft frenzy. Knowing them as well as I do, I can assure you that if the chance to become an instant playoff contender and possible super Bowl, candidate will only cost them a number one pick, All but the most insane delusional jet fan will jump at that. And their ownership knows full well their mindset these days.

IDK. Pick 13's cap number is $3.35M and 43 is $1.58M. Those aren't that enormous. NYJ is $11M under the cap at present, per OTC. That means they are effectively one or two million over the cap limit. [At this time of year, the PS, 52n and 53rd contracts, PUP/IR and in season piggy bank cost roughly $12M for most teams, with some variation for clubs with top 10 picks.] But the Jets have tons of places to get cap space. They haven't been mangling contracts, except a little for Duane Brown due to age.

Their cap in 2024 is pretty good, but not limitless. OTC lists them with $85M, but with just 29 players under contract, that is really about $67.5M. They do have some big free agents. Quinnen Williams, LT Duane Brown (age 38), DE Carl Lawson, WR Corey Davis, and to a lesser extent, safeties Whitehead and Clark, are all notable. Those guys will cost money. And AR's cap number would be about $33M. Again, generating $20M in cap space for 2023 doesn't mean all $20M lands in 2024, probably $8M to $10M ends up there with the rest in 2025 or later. And they do have plenty of places next year to kick the can down to the road.

One problem they do have is a weaker offensive line. Profootballnetwork ranked it 29th with just OG Laken Tomlinson and Vera Tucker (a RG but who can play RT and LT). Their center sounds okay. The Jets need a tackle. Mekhi Becton if he is ever healthy might be one, but he did not play in 2022 at all and very little in 2021. Brown is old and had a down year. Is he washed? Cutting Brown saves $5M. Max Mitchell is a 2022 4th rounder who was less than average.

The Jets need a starting OT, and pick 13 sounds like the place to get one. And that pick with a $3.35M cap number is loads cheaper than buying one, or trading for Bakh, unless that happens after June 1. Bakh is dirt cheap to an acquiring team in 2023 (not so much in 2024) but GB can't trade him until after June 1.

I see lots of permutations here. You might be right that NYJ will give GB pick 13. But I don't it will be cap driven. It makes no sense to me but it might to Woody.

Great question TK. What makes sense to Woody are “plug & play” players. He said that in his most recent ESPN interview.

“Add AR to this Jets team and…. Oooo, wait! I almost forgot Offensive Linemen!”

Can’t even get to mentioning their Top 5 Defense because that OL is a gaping hole in Woody’s dreams.

In my mind it's cap driven knowing who they have to sign, and needing, literally needing GB's help filling out their OL to protect their main investment, AR.

Max Mitchell had a severe blood clotting issue. Becton isn't being counted on by anybody there. That's why Bakhtiari made too much sense being paired with AR. Granted, they will need to be separate deals, but, by June 2nd, Bakhtiari is likely in NY along with AR.

I do think that's how this will break out. AR and another OL, likely Runyan, gets traded to NYJ on Draft Day, and an agreement in principle for David Bakhtiari with terms to be finalized June 2nd.

Runyan makes too much sense in all of this as well, because his rookie deal is up after this year, he's thought of highly, can play both OG and OT, knows the system and is used to playing with both DB & AR. Runyan's dead cap hit is $43k. Insanely tradable, with what should be a good value return in draft capital, being he's a starter on his rookie deal.

I'd imagine that $5M nut makes a difference when two Packers starting OL are added to the equation. ICBW. I probably am, but, just felt all along the Jets would need this kind of assist from GB, as they had so little on their OL.

You are probably right cap considerations may not be driving the train completely, and the Packers might perceive both their top picks this year are the deal maker or breaker.

We'll see soon enough, won't we?

Hmmm... The Jets do not NEED Rodgers. Last year's QB's play was unacceptable on the field. That's why Woody Johnson made the extravagant promise to "Look for a Experienced QB." He and his staff flew out and talked to Rodgers for five hours. What do you think they covered?

Draft another QB? What makes you think that anyone they draft would be an improvement? This regime has already flamed out by picking Wilson. If you're Johnson, are you going to give them another chance? At Pick 13? Will you find a slam dunk player?

I seriously doubt it. I heard a commentator suggest that Rodgers' interview has caused the Packers to perceive that they have more leverage and they changed their (unsigned) agreement. If this was a hard and fast slam dunk, we wouldn't be even writing this.

The Jets are "all-in" Great! It's the Packers' chance to take advantage of it.

From my perspective, Leverage is mostly Packers at the present time.

LMAO.... Are you serious? I mean you can't possibly be that uninformed. Well, you ARE a known Vikings fan so you live in a constant fantasy world anyways so maybe.

Woody Johnson KNOWS this is the BEST chance the Jets have at a SB. The GM and HC are at the end of the rope. If they don't get it done this year, there IS NO NEXT YEAR!

Thank you very much for a clean timeline. It lists all tangible details and no baloney.
No discussions about trade value as none of us know what either party's bottom line is.
Allows fans to temper expectations down during non-critical dates and only ramp up around the time of a real check point.
If something happens between checkpoints, all the better.

That is much the same way I see it, Wendell. I also think that if the deal isn't done by the draft, other teams are going to look at this and say "We could add Aaron Rodgers at QB and owe nothing for a year." Even then, it'll likely be a late round pick, and maybe not even a first round pick in 2024.

If Rodgers had retired, or been retired by an injury, we'd be looking at nothing for him. If he'd been damaged in a car accident, or abducted by a UFO, or lost his mind on an Ayahuasa trip, we'd get nothing. We're playing with the house's money at this point, and anything we get for Rodgers is gravy.

If nobody wants him, and Sept 1 rolls around, he'll have to retire or be a backup to Love. The trading deadline isn't until October, so maybe some team has a sudden need for a QB once the season starts. In any event, this is nothing that should be generating any angst among Packer fans. We're fine at QB. We're ready to go. We're going to try to win the division, regardless of what happens with Rodgers.

My Personal Crystal Ball says.....Rodgers won't be on the team on Opening Day. Surely, somebody out there wants him. Right now, it seems to me that the Jets don't want to part with pick #13, so the price-point for them seems to be #43, which is comparable to what we got for Favre.. Any team in the league that wants to top that could have Aaron Rodgers on their team, and IMO, that's going to happen if the Jets don't close t his deal by this year's draft, and it appears we're looking at #13 in compensation. We don't have any reason at this point to come off that position. Woody is the guy who flew everybody out there and went public before he'd even discussed what the Packers would want. He has set the expectations. It's his bacon in the fire. The fan base is going to hate him if that doesn't happen.

Me, personally? I'd make them sweat and then take #43 after the first day of the draft, unless there was a better offer.

Dude, I was talking about trading Bakhtiari, or anyone else before the trade deadline. If they move it back it will also give teams time to work out more deals than in previous years...

The AR trade will happen before the draft, during the draft, or after 1 Jun... It will happen though. I'm confident of that.

Trade deadline is currently week 8 now? (Not positive about that.) If they were to move it back to say week 11, it would give teams who have players hurt in week 9 & 10 to at least try to get them replaced before a push towards a Super Bowl.

Personally, I think they should move it back to like week 12 or 13, since they extended the season. I wish they'd increase the game day rosters even more too.

I don't know that the players' union would agree to increasing game day roster sizes. The reasons? The CBA set the salary cap (based on revenues). The CBA also set the minimums for each year of service. If there are more players on the game day rosters, with no additional money to pay them, and the top guys are going to make top dollar, it means some guys in the middle are going to get squeezed in contract dollars to pay for that extra nearly $800K per year per additional game day player.

What they may be willing to do, though, is to agree to have fewer inactives (maybe 5 instead of 7-8) on game day. Maybe not, though, since that might mean bottom-of-roster guys who would be healthy scratches instead being cut.

This is a great piece, Wendell.

4/27 - One would think the Jets have more leverage over the Packers here, but, what if the Jets are, like the Packers, finding that fitting the #13 pick into their cap is an equal challenge?

The Jets still have Quinnen Williams to sign after this AR deal is done, leaving little wiggle room to work with.

NYJ adding the #13 under their cap might be too much for them entirely. Since we're dealing so closely, that compensation might be why we've seen so much contract restructuring, close to our ultimate limits there.

I wonder if all this stuff we've heard since news broke and the speculation isn't rendered meaningless, and if the Packers & Jets aren't in fact working diligently together on what Wingo characterized as a blockbuster deal after all?

Bakhtiari can't be moved officially until after June 1st... so, any bigger deal between GB/NYJ prior to the draft would have a lot of moving parts.

That 3/26 Owners Meeting and the 4/17 Offseason Program might be the biggest dates in this if they truly are on target to close this deal with all parties happy prior to the draft. It wouldn't surprise me if this gets closed quickly, as I believe both parties have been dialed in pretty close for a while.

***Both sides want this deal to happen. Both sides need for this deal to happen with similar urgency & for different reasons, removing leverage from the discussion.

It's been pretty quiet since Murphy's last public comments... fingers crossed here.

I'd love it if we somehow could make it all happen this year, and be done with AR's dead cap hits in 2023 entirely, leaving 2024 more as a recovery time, and to do some clean up! Add a FA or two...

Based upon what TGR shared in his "Barely Enough Cap Space" piece, it seems like we just might be able to break on through to the other side with this deal happening before the draft.

I want to upvote this for break on through quote alone, but I have reservations about parts of it. I will limit myself to Quinnen Williams, who is in the same boat as Rashan Gary. Both guys are on 5th year options, with Williams at $9.59M all cash and Gary at $10.89M all cash (different positions). Both are going to get lots of money.

But like I've asserted for Gary, the jets likely will extend Williams and save $2M to $4M on the cap in 2023, not reduce their cap space. No doubt his cap number in 2024 will be substantial, in the teens or the twenties. Of course, he might be looking for Donald money and no extension gets done. No way for me to know. An all-in Jets team has enough cap in 2023 and 2024 even with their top two picks. I don't think there is a cap-related reason to part with both, or even either of them.

The Jim Morrison he let me paint from came with it a great story. Backstage in his dressing room in 1972, right after releasing LA Woman and before leaving for Paris, Carl told me how kind, affable and self deprecating Morrison was. Unlike the many stories told. He did mention Jim was boozing too much, but, had a great time talking easily with him.

I totally agree. Who gives AF if we're sliding in sideways? Under the cap is under the cap, and if the Packers can somehow break off enough to get AR off our books and acquire the 13 & 43 while being under that cap, it's a herculean win.

As long as we get it done, and we're eventually holding the Lombardi Trophy again soon.

Tight is right. TGR gets a case of cookies.

Draft is a deadline, but more so for Woody and the Jets. Going into the draft sans Rodgers puts incredible pressure on GM Douglas who has yet to field a winning team in 4 years.

Packers need to let him know, if the deal includes picks, and he can't pull the trigger before then, they will be following up on other teams' "inquiries".

I wonder if the Patriots have inquired?

I haven't heard a soul mention how the #13 and #43 picks might impact the Jets cap, and if the Packers have even more "leverage," to get this deal done by Draft Day 1?

If the Jets don't trade away both picks, they might have difficulty adding AR, DBak, while getting back Quinnen Williams onto their roster & under their cap.

It's possible that this might be something the Jets are in need of making happen: trading those two picks by April 27th, without knowing how their cap is affected by this trade.

Seemed GB has been clearing an ass ton of cap of late, more than to simply absorb the AR dead cap.

The Packers are about to experience the storm of their own making.

They finally made the decision to move on from Rodgers (albeit a year late) but they can't pee into the wind and complain about the rain now.

Many NFL teams have chosen this climate, and with a solid FO and great coaching, the storm can pass with acceptable damage. I fear the clean up for the Packers is going to take awhile.

It appears that the remediation of the team - via the salary cap - will take:

1 year - if Rodgers retires
2 years - if Rodgers is traded
3 years - if Rodgers returns to GB to play out his contact

So, there is no avoiding the handicap - anywhere from 1-3 years. Thank you Mark Murphy.

I believe Rodgers warrants a 1st round pick this year and a conditional 2nd round next year that becomes another 1st if they make the play offs this season! Some say we should get a player as well and that could be one of Murphy & Gutekuntz demands, If so who? Elijah Moore? Denzel Mims? Personally I would go defense in Quincy Williams or Jermain Johnson but that's just me and very unlikely. At any rate I would never let him go for anything less than #13 this year and the conditional 2nd next year PERIOD. Rodgers makes them instant play off and SB contenders even if he only plays this season but I get the feeling AR12 will commit to at least 2 years and if he gets to the post season he may play 3 where he stated he was gonna retire as a Packer anyways. It's not set in stone he don't yet do that as well. Go Pack Go!

Agree. You & sane, rational people aware & understanding of true market value feel the same, JD!

As for Quincy Williams, the Jets already signed him to his extension. His brother Quinnen is the big fish they still need to sign, so, I could see that #13 coming to the Packers outright. Quinnen is a big part of the Jets maintaining a Top 5 Defense.

One quick look at the Jets cap, and Johnson I believe would be over $10M dead cap hit that I don't think they could afford while taking on AR, and re-signing Quinnen, other trade pieces, etc.

The only affordable dead cap for the Jets might be Mims at $377k or Elijah Moore's $2.9M.

@JDH

What if the Jets are paying Rodgers salary 59 million, they should also give up 2 number 1's and a player of your choosing?
lol, that's a good one

For a guy who may only play 1 year and call it quits?

I don't think the Jets are even that foolish.

Remember there are three parties in this negotiation. Rodgers is involved too. Will he renegotiate his contract. Will he commit to playing past 2023. If he does have a new contract, is he taking time to scrutinize it.

All these things take time and impact mostly what the Jets can do.

But it appears the Packers have most of the leverage. And I personally don't want them to give in.

Here's my opinion......

I don't know why the Jets want him.
Didn't Rodgers say he was 90% retired mentally, then found out the Packers were shopping him, then decided to play?
If i'm the Jets, i'm sure as heck aren't giving up the 13th pick for someone who has mentally "checked out".

I question whether this trade even happens.

I could see the Jets giving the Packers notice to take their offer, or don't take it and close the book.
Like a week before the draft.

If the Packers still have Rodgers under contract after the draft, this thing gets interesting.
The Packers could let him play one more season, put Love on ice with a 5th year option.
Or...Tell Rodgers he has to compete for the job (like he'd worry about that)
Cut Rodgers a check and then release him post June 1st

Sign Rodgers to a 50-60 million dollar Ambassador deal and Rodgers retires.
***************
But to trade the 13th pick for a player who states he's only going to play because the Packers were shopping him and his feelings were hurt?

I don't think so....lol

But then again....the Jets could keep doing.....Jet things.

Since, when do you believe anything Mr. Covid Vaccinated says?

Wouldn't you and the rest of us have liked to have been listening to Rodgers answers with the Jets regarding many questions about his motivation, whether he will be all in, and how long he plans on playing? I have a feeling what was said has never been shared with GB.

I may be a minority but a fair competition in camp & I for one believe Love edges out Rodgers for QB1. Only one way you get experience & that is by playing!

Is the holdup possibly the players under contract that are being negotiated with in a multi player deal? The AR list of players he likes contained both FA and contracted players which were not publish anywhere. So maybe there are just lots of moving parts that have to be packaged together to make THE TRADE

I truley believe Mark Murphy because he calls the shots wants Rodgers to retire .

I getting tired of this leverage talks between jets and packers it is meaningless.

I could see murphy trading Rodgers to the texans for a conditional whatever and with many posion pills attached i.e. retrading him granting him permission to unretire.

Of course rodgers wint accept this and will retire what is probabley what murphy wants.

Tgis is personal at this point and unless the jets offer some stupid crazy comp rodgers aint going anywhere.

Maybe, but getting something for "nothing" in this case makes the trade a worthwhile pursuit. Pushing him into retirement would be shooting yourself in the foot.

"I getting tired of this leverage talks between jets and packers it is meaningless."

It IS meaningless because there's nothing coming from those actually involved in the process. It's all clickbait posted by people who are essentially making up stuff. We're all waiting for some real news.

Are we under the assumption that this deal is only being negotiated by Gute? I have the feeling the same quadrumvirate that were making decisions before are still part of the decision making group to make this happen. If the "We're not idiots" (WeNI) crowd is trying to make sure that statement isn't false, they may be putting demands on Gute that make it hard for him to negotiate with the Jets. From what I have read, the Packers want complete salary/cap relief while also wanting a boatload of draft picks. What if there is movement on the picks by the Jets if the Packers pick up salary, but that won't fly past the WeNI faction. Maybe Gute is fine waiting for 2024 and 2025 compensation and is willing to go past June 1st, but the WeNI faction demands 2023 picks or are Murphy & mini-me only concerned with salary and cap relief so they want a post-June1 trade and no salary chipped in. MLF probably wants more weapons (or 2023 picks) to help bolster a roster that without Rodgers could have a worse record than last year. Too many moving parts JUST on the Packers side to make this an easy transaction.

"I have the feeling the same quadrumvirate that were making decisions before are still part of the decision making group"

Murphy as President likely needs to sign off on a deal. BG and Ball are likely involved to talk about cap and roster implications regarding players and picks. So, yeah, I'd say at least 3 of the 4, but if there are players involved in return in the discussions then all 4.

"From what I have read, the Packers want complete salary/cap relief while also wanting a boatload of draft picks. "

Always ask for more than you reasonably expect to get, because you never know when someone will say "yes".

A worse record in 2023 has nothing to do about not having Rodgers, but all about having a depleted WR, TE, DL group, and minus Gary at the start of the season. Need compensation in 2023! Big time!

Excellent timeline and reference for all amateur GMs. I don't delve too deeply into salary cap ramifications - as I lean on posters such as TGR for that. However, IMO, it seems that the most optimal target date for both teams is a trade prior to the April 27 draft. Thus giving the Jets as much time with Rodgers to bring him into the fold (and maximizing merchandise sales). While for the Packers - acquiring the draft picks that Gutekunst no doubt covets.

The interesting thing about the (supposed) trade is most folks are focusing on the draft-player compensation angle. I believe the major hurdle is financial. It's not a two-way issue, it's a three-way issue: Packers, Jets and Rodgers.
Rodgers wants the money the Packers agreed to give him. The Packers now are in a choke point and need some relief. My take is they would like the Jets to help them out but the Jets are saying 'you signed him, we're not going to bail you out'. This, to me, is the highest hurdle. How do the Packers and Jets find a place where Green Bay gives, the Jets give, and Rodgers gets paid by the Jets?

I don't know if Rodgers would want to do this given that he feels 'slighted' by the Packers, but a solution is for Rodgers to sign a new contract with Green Bay at a lower cost. There's a handshake agreement between the parties that after the signing. the trade and that contract go to the Jets. After the trade is official, the Jets tear up the contract and give Rodgers his full due in the original contract. I'm sure the league office would be a problem, but it gives everyone what they want from a financial standpoint. The danger for Rodgers is the Jets say, "gee, we didn't agree to that" and not pay him his due. He could retire at that point and it all goes flat.

I think the draft-player compensation was agreed to awhile ago.

I also think that the financial issue is a significant obstacle. Rodgers likes his money - despite outside appraisals to his true worth - so his inflexibility could very much be a factor in these negotiations.

That's an interesting take, Harry, and could certainly be the case. The poor, suffering NFL owners need relief on the brink of extending Roger Goodell through early 2027 at $60 million per year. Yes, per year. It's good to know where the bodies are buried.

No, this doesn't work. there is nothing AR can do to lower that $40M dead money hit that GB incurs with a trade. Not with a wink and a nod or anything else.

AR can lower his cap number for the Jets. He'd have to take a massive pay cut to make it significant.

That's polite way to put it. I usually didn't care if he missed optional offseason portions. But if there was a year to show up, it was last offseason with all the new guys. I can understand why the packers FO wants to be done with the guy after new historic deal and he couldn't be bothered to show up and work on some timing given all the new WRs.

Deadlines are defined and impact negotiations however, the deadline not mentioned is the rate of decay concerning Rodgers. The Jets are in WIN NOW mode and the window is quickly closing. They will succeed w/him or fail w/o him. Over a 13th ro draft pick? If that's the holdup, try explaining that to the fanbase of a SB starved team on the verge. I've been trying to keep it inside of me as much as possible as a matter of discretion for the good of the Packers, but now I'll let it out: The Jets are stupid, to say the least, to take on Aaron Rodgers!
What a headache is the arrogant and weird and domineering Rodgers -- and for what, heartache in the playoffs?
Meanwhile, the Packers, having the unexpected good fortune of finding a team stupid enough to take on Rodgers, are stupid for not getting the deal done by now -- and should do it before tomorrow.
A second-round pick and a player [nominations here], or two second-round picks. Easy-peasy.
Our front office was idiotic last year for giving Rodgers such a ridiculous contract; they are risking another catastrophic failure of idiocy if they don't get this deal done right away.
How much idiocy is a fan of the Packers expected to endure?

I heard Murphy tell Gutey, "Hold my beer..."

"How much idiocy is a fan of the Packers expected to endure?"

The mistake you're making is thinking it's the Packers and draft compensation holding it up. It may not be. It may be the Packers want to wait until June to trade him, and the Jets don't want to wait.

Or, Gutey is asking too much and he's confident Woody Johnson will cave before the draft or on draft day. What is idiotic is thinking this deal has to be done today, or tomorrow, or next week.

They may have decided already and won't announce it until Jets are on the clock at 13.

Why all the angst and hand wringing?

Lol'd at the "unexpected good fortune of finding a team stupid enough to take on Rodgers."

He's a 4 time MVP, SB winner, SB MVP. That's what the Jets want. A Super Bowl. Just because you hate him doesn't mean others don't love and appreciate all he's done for GB.

There's no reason Gutey should roll over for the Jets. Why would he? Besides, there are other teams out there who need a QB and just because it isn't in the news doesn't mean they aren't calling.

SMH, even if you're not bothered by Rodgers jerking us around as fans (which has me justifiably angry, no hate involved) -- how is it that you are unfazed by the season-ending fiascos of Rodgers at Lambeau Field the past three seasons?
SMH, until the deal is done, it's not done, and can be left undone for any reason by the Jets or Aaron Rodgers.
SMH, in pointing out how Rodgers has been arrogant and domineering with the Packers for at least the past couple of years, it's fascinating how fans take such offense at sincere and sensible criticism of Rodgers, but have no problem ridiculing and scorning me (even to the point of misrepresenting me as a hater of Rodgers).
SMH, it seems some people hold their dignity at little worth, and are willing to be pushed around by the manipulations of a superficial celebrity.
***
Just doing a look into recent football history, it seems it would have been better for us, and for Rodgers, if he had left the Packers after the 2016 season.
Some glimpses of glitter for the Packers since then, but little of real value for the Green and Gold, especially at the price of integrity as extracted by the diva.
If only he would leave us now, finally and for certain, after the 2022 season.
To the extent that this may be due to quibbling by our front office, it is indeed idiocy.

You kill me. All the whining makes me laugh. You don't even know if they're quibbling. They're probably having a great laugh at your expense. The last thing you've been is sincere or sensible, but don't let facts get in your way.

I think you're a pretty good guy except for letting the AR12 situation destroy any composure you might have had. R E L A X...

The deal will get done. Rodgers has nothing to do with it now, so why are you pissed at him? You don't know if it is the Packers or Jets being unreasonable. You know nothing, except you think 12 has been a diva and hurt your feelings.

It's his life. He can lead it how he wishes, just like you and me. He wasn't even the one who was holding anyone hostage. He told both teams what he wanted and they decided to keep it quiet, but yet you blame 12.

Have you ever walked away from a car deal? If you haven't, you been taken your whole life. (I used to sell cars year ago.) If you walked in and didn't leave at least once, you paid way more than you should've, I can guarantee that, unless it was a family member selling you the car, and then you really got took. ; P

I've read so much AR12 hate around here lately, it makes me want to puke, but people are entitled to their opinion.

I find it funny that people want things immediately these days, even to the detriment of their team. I just don't know why people worry about it at all. It's no reflection on you. If Gutey makes a great deal, great, if he doesn't, not much we can do about it.

Why are you in such an all fired hurry to get this done? What if the trade doesn't go through until June? Are you going to lament the trade every day until June? What if it goes to July? Can I expect 10,000 comments saying what a diva AR is for not trading himself?

Sorry, it just doesn't make sense to me. You talk about integrity, manipulation, play the victim. I don't get any of that either...

Lets just hope a decision comes by the time the Jets are on the clock, if not it may be June...

As to your evaluation of the Rodgers situation - I think that we (fans) should be prepared to be underwhelmed by the r.o.t. (return on trade). It's more probable that we receive a Favre like return than a Wilson/Stafford one.

Just ridding ourselves of the insufferably melodramatic soap opera of arrogant Rodgers -- "As the Spiral Turns" -- would be exhilarating in itself. . .
. . . especially as it seems Jordan Love is working with our skill players, on their own time, to prepare the Packers for a much more dignified and successful future.
All of this would be good for my mental health in all of its fragility (albeit with its tenacity).
I've made it to 60 (with more than 50 of those years as a loyal Packers fan); and with the grace of God, I'll fight the good fight as long as he wants me here on this earth.

A large part of my amusement has been able to connect with others who have been similarly amused or perplexed by Rodgers constant antics and histrionics. However it now appears that we are on the last page - of this chapter - in the annals of the GBP. So a new chapter awaits us all! And spring is here!

Just for the record, my bottom line ask for Rodgers is a 2nd round this year and a 2nd round next year. Plus a smattering of lower round picks - if possible. Because we know that Gutey also loves the lower rounds.

It may be a QB driven league, but it is still a team sport. I don't think we should've given him his last two contracts, but I don't have control over that. We've all seen 12 crumble in must have it games. We seen him deflect blame on many people.

I've tried to support him as long as he was our starting QB. He no longer is, that doesn't mean we have to fillet him in the comments sections.

If we let our GMs do their jobs, this trade will eventually get done. Then we can bitch about Murphy and Gutey and what crap draft picks we got.

The Packers simply hold the key card ....QB Rogers. Packers have two QB starters under contract. The Jets have .5 QB starters.
The Jets are now taylor made for Rogers ---/Hacket OC, Lazard, Garret Wilson, top 5 defense etc ---to make a run for the SB.
Woody Johnson and the entire Jets nation want Rogers.

Worst case scenario if Gutekunst holds until the first week of the regular season is:. Rogers decides to retire instead of backing up Love.....which would clear 58.3 million.

1) April 27th.....If Packers want 2023 draft picks Gute might have to compromise for a 2nd rounder plus jets player(s).

2) After April 27th Packers can simply wait for Jets to give them 2024 picks and/or jets players as part of the the trade.

3) Unless the Jets are willing to go the entire off-season without a QB1...The Packers simply have the leverage.

4). More than likely Rogers would extend or rework a new contract with the Jets (especially if they make the playoffs)....which makes the "only 1yr rental talk" completely mute/void

5) There is also nothing illegal about agreeing to a future June 2 trade now.. while receiving draft picks ahead of time.

Hold on tight Gute.... No need to collapse.....I see a solid comprise in favor of the Packers on the Horizon!

Yes, that guy. Even with the injuries, he's more likely to still be playing football in 5 years than Rodgers

Neither are likely to make 5 years in my view.

I don't think the Rams would want to trade him, though, considering a pre-6/1 trade is impossible capwise, and a post-6/1 trade means a $55.5M dead money hit for him in 2024.

Nice article. IMHO I think the key date is June1 and not the draft. There are assumptions I’m not sure hold true. Why is it critical to get the 2023 first? Will this draftee set the GBP on the road to the playoffs? To the SB? Not likely. The real need for GB is cap relief. The June 1 date is key to that. Who says also that the GBP can’t reach a handshake deal with jets and come pick 13 on April 27 they send the carrier pigeon to the jets with a suggested pick? And the Jets could do the same if we do a swap for our first round pick. OR maybe the June 1 cap relief is considered in the intrinsic value of the trade and GB gets 2024 first which could if Jets wishes come true be the 32nd pick and some conditionals based on where they end up or how long QB12 plays. In short I just don’t think the 2023 picks are the key…

Another 'take' would be if a top 12 team with 'deep playoff aspirations' and the ability to create salary cap...had their QB1 go down with a season-ending injury prior to any Jets/GB trade. That team would only want/need AR for 1 year (until their own QB is back). Even a veiled threat of a new trade partner would certainly accelerate negotiations with the NYJ.

I just want to know what the preliminary talks sounded like before the Packers allowed the Jets to talk to Rodgers.

If the Packers didn't talk about compensation- at least in rough terms- before they allowed the Jets to talk to Rodgers, it's a huge misstep.

If the Packers did talk about compensation and mentioned they were thinking in terms of a 2023 first round pick, shame on the Jets for dealing in bad faith.

I'm sure the Jets want to keep their #13 to spend on another young QB to learn under Rodgers' wing. If they don't want to give up the 2023 1st rounder, don't let it stop the deal. Figure something out.

Ultimately, I'm sticking to what I've said for many months- I don't care about the compensation. I don't want the Packers to get washed, but ultimately the most important prize is getting Rodgers numbers off the books in and moving forward with the future at QB starting in 2023. I'll be really pissed if the Packers manage to F this up.

Keep Mark Murphy away from Woody Johnson at the Owner’s Meetings ! We don’t need this goof getting in the middle of Gutey’s chess match and hurting our position !
Go Pack Go !!

If already reported I'm sorry but fantastic news that Darnell Washington is doing a pre-draft visit and in GB, as I type this. Love DW and would be a fantastic pick!

Very interested in how good of a receiver he could become since he wasn't tasked with that in college.

In my three-plus years of unexpectedly living in Georgia, I haven't been able to get into the Bulldogs -- even with their awesome achievement of back-to-back national championships -- but I do have a little bit of fun seeing the "G" of Georgia drafted by the "G" of Green Bay.
Also, I feel at least a little more connected with my new southern neighbors. Plus, I've started drinking bourbon.
Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to Badgers basketball on national television tonight. It's not the Big Dance of the NCAA Tournament as March Madness, but I'm enjoying the informal sock hop of the NIT.

If Rodgers feels like the Packers are jerking him around, he has the leverage to change all of this. No doubt the Packers will exercise Love's 5th year option. If a trade isn't done by the May 2 deadline for doing that, Rodgers might say he's changed his mind and he's coming back to play for the Packers. Bluffing or serious?--only Aaron will know. But that would cause some serious heartburn for Gutey.

Good grief, don't you people think that there could possibly be a little more going on behind the scenes than is reported, do you think everything thats being discussed has to be posted to CHTV..."Hey Woody, this is Gutes, thats a great but first we have to tell the amateur GM's at CHTV about it"...im sure the Jets know all about the quirks of AR, they went out to Cali and talked to him, they've watched him for years...theres nothing they don't know about him, theres nothing most people on earth don't know about him because the press is constantly following his every move...I bet this gets solved inside of 2 weeks...AR's quirks and lifestyle won't raise as many eyebrows in the Big Apple as they do in little old conservative GB...HIT DEM DOWN VOTES!!! hahahaha...

What worries me the most is that the same management who (only twelve months ago) passed on Denver's offer of two firsts, two seconds, and more, are now negotiating again. And now it seems they can't even deal for one first.
On the plus side, they have assured us that they are "not idiots". So they've got that going for them, which is nice.

Dreaming: swap 1's (13 and 15), both of Jets #2s (42 and 43), and a conditional pick in 2024. And include a Savage for Corey Davis swap.

We thought the delay was Rodgers, but both teams already knew his answer. Then we thought the delay is a standoff in negotiations. Surprising, since there should have been some preliminary agreement before the Jets flew out to California. Now we hear that the 2 teams have been talking since the super bowl.

Suppose..... just suppose....... That the 2 teams have already agreed on all of the trade details. BUT there are some players involved with contracts that need to be reworked first (current Packer or Jets contracts, or even other free agents to be signed by the Jets). Silence would be critical, as to not screw up those contract negotiations........ IMO this is far more likely than a negotiations impass. And would also fit with the prior "packages" comment, and now "sworn to silence" comment today.
