25 Possible Candidates for the Packers Defensive Coordinator Position

It won't be long before the Packers are searching for a new defensive coordinator. Jeff Hafley has been actively interviewing for multiple head coaching opportunities since the season ended. He has interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers. As of Monday afternoon, the Dolphins have zeroed in on Hafley becoming their next head coach.

Hafley landing a head coaching job won't surprise Matt LaFleur. "I think Hafley's gonna do a great job on the interview, and I fully anticipate him getting one of these (open jobs)," LaFleur said. "I would be so happy for him because he deserves it, and he's a great friend, he's a great man, he's a great coach. I'd hate to see him leave for us, but at the same time, that's what this business is all about, and he's earned those opps."

Hafley has done a solid job with the Packers' defense over the past two seasons. Replacing him won't be easy, but there are plenty of quality candidates available. LaFleur said "all options are on the table" for how he would go about replacing the Packers' defensive coordinator. LaFleur added that the team will "make sure we have a good plan in place" if Hafley indeed leaves.

The Packers have reportedly started exploring all of their options. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that Green Bay has "begun work on defensive coordinators, as they expect Jeff Hafley is going to get a head-coaching job." The Packers obviously can't start interviewing until Hafley officially accepts a head coaching job, but they can start compiling their list of candidates. The Packers will likely explore all avenues. Here are 25 possible candidates that might end up interviewing for the Packers defensive coordinator position.

Derrick Ansley

Ansley is currently the defensive passing game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, working alongside both Matt LaFleur and Jeff Hafley for the past two seasons. Ansley has experience as a defensive coordinator at both the NFL and college levels, but the majority of his coaching career has been coaching defensive backs. Before coming to Green Bay, Ansley was the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers under Brandon Staley. At the University of Alabama, Ansley worked for Nick Saban and was instrumental in the recruitment and development of current Packers Xavier McKinney and Trevon Diggs. Ansley also spent a year in Las Vegas working for Jon Gruden, along with Rich Bisaccia. The Atlanta Falcons interviewed Ansley last offseason for their defensive coordinator position. Jeff Hafley could opt to bring Ansley with him as his defensive coordinator.

Mathieu Araujo

Araujo's been with the Dolphins organization since 2022, serving as the cornerbacks coach for the last two seasons. Araujo has remained with the team despite three different defensive coordinator changes. In Miami, he's worked under Mike McDaniel, Vic Fangio, and Anthony Weaver. He also worked with former Green Bay Packer coaches Anthony Campanile and Joe Barry in Miami. Before transitioning to the NFL level, Araujo coached at Yale and Boston College. His only experience as a defensive coordinator came at Yale, where he was the co-defensive coordinator for one season. Araujo interviewed for the New York Jets' defensive coordinator position last week.

Bobby Babich

Babich served as the defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills for the past two seasons. Babich was hired in 2017 as an assistant defensive backs coach in Buffalo by Sean McDermott and Leslie Frazier. He eventually transitioned to coaching linebackers before becoming the defensive coordinator. His dad, Bob Babich, coached for nearly 35 years. The Packers reportedly had interest in Babich in 2024 before hiring Jeff Hafley, but Babich was promoted in Buffalo instead. Babich also worked under former Packers' defensive coordinator Mike Pettine in Cleveland for two seasons.

Ephraim Banda

Banda is currently the safeties coach for the Cleveland Browns. Most of his coaching career has come at the college level, but he served under Kevin Stefanski and Jim Schwartz for the last three seasons. Banda started as the safeties coach at the University of Miami, but eventually became a co-defensive coordinator for a season. He then became the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Utah State for two seasons. The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets both interviewed Banda for their defensive coordinator positions. He has also been rumored as a candidate to take over for Schwartz in Cleveland if Schwartz leaves.

Gus Bradley

Gus Bradley is currently the assistant defensive head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Before that, he served as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts. Bradley has about 12 total years of experience as a defensive coordinator. Bradley’s first defensive coordinator job was with the Seattle Seahawks, where he played a hand in building the “Legion of Boom.” He also has four years of head coach experience. Bradley has worked for numerous successful NFL coaches, including Pete Carroll, Jon Gruden, Monte Kiffin, Kyle Shanahan, and Robert Saleh. Rich Bisaccia worked with Bradley for a season in Las Vegas. LaFleur's strong relationship with Shanahan, Saleh, and Bisaccia would give LaFleur plenty of insight into Bradley. Bradley could be a candidate to replace Robert Saleh in San Francisco if Saleh leaves for a head coaching opportunity.

Jonathan Cooley

Colley has been the defensive passing game coordinator for the Carolina Panthers for the past two seasons. Before that, he coached the team's secondary. Cooley worked for Sean McVay and the Rams from 2020 to 2022. Cooley has worked under three strong defensive-minded coaches who Matt LaFleur thinks very highly of: Brandon Staley, Raheem Morris, and Ejiro Evero. Cooley has gotten interviews of his own, but he's a candidate to follow Evero if he ends up landing a head coaching position. "He's just got a way with words and making confusing or complex stuff seem real simple," said Pro Bowler Jaycee Horn. "He breaks the game down to the simplest form for you and gives you the ability to play fast."

DeMarcus Covington

Covington is currently the defensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, working alongside Matt LaFleur and Jeff Hafley for just one season. Covington has experience coordinating defenses at both the NFL and college levels. He served as New England’s defensive coordinator in 2023 before joining Green Bay’s defensive staff. Before joining the Packers, he spent eight years as a defensive assistant with the New England Patriots, working with Bill Belichick, Jerod Mayo, Matt Patricia, Bret Bielema, and Brian Flores. Former Packer executive Eliot Wolf also worked with Covington in New England. By all accounts, the Packers think very highly of Covington. "I just think DeMarcus has done a fabulous job with that entire group," Brian Gutekunst said back in August. "I like the way they are playing. Excited for what he's going to do for us this year." Covington has already interviewed for the open defensive coordinator position in Dallas.

Aden Durde

Durde is currently the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, a position he's held for the last two seasons. Mike Macdonald currently calls the defense for Seattle, so Durde would be able to pursue a defensive coordinator position that allows him to call the defense. Before joining Macdonald in Seattle, Durde worked under Dan Quinn in Dallas and Atlanta. Both Matt LaFleur and Durde were with the Falcons during the 2016 season, so they have some familiarity with one another. He also worked with Raheem Morris. Durde interviewed for the Packers in 2024, but didn't get the job. Durde has started getting interviews for head coaching opportunities.

Brian Flores

Flores was the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings for the last three years. The Vikings let Flores' contract expire so he's free to explore all options. Flores’ coaching career began in 2008 as a special teams assistant with the New England Patriots. He coached in New England for 11 seasons before eventually becoming the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Flores worked with DeMarcus Covington for two seasons in New England. He's also worked under Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin, and Kevin O’Connell, three incredibly bright football minds. Flores interviewed for the Green Bay Packers’ head coach job back in 2019, but the team hired Matt LaFleur instead. Flores was reportedly the team’s second choice. Flores will have plenty of job opportunities, but there appears to be plenty of mutual respect between Flores and Matt LaFleur. "Quite honestly, we have to do everything we can to stay ahead of a guy like Matt," Flores said. "I think for Matt to go in his bag and be a West Coast guy and then turn around and he's got this whole zone read/RPO/counter read, that's pretty impressive. And I don't think it's being talked about enough. It's impressive to watch. He's obviously a very, very good coach. One of the best in the league."

Jonathan Gannon

Gannon was most recently the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals, but was fired at the end of the 2025 season. Before his time in Arizona, Gannon coached defensive backs for seven years before earning a defensive coordinator job with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also has experience as a college and pro scout. Gannon has coached under Mike Zimmer in Minnesota, Frank Reich and Matt Eberflus in Indianapolis, and Nick Sirianni in Philadelphia. He also worked with former Green Bay Packer assistant Jerry Gray in Tennessee as a defensive quality control coach. Gannon is currently interviewing for head coach and defensive coordinator jobs around the league.

Patrick Graham

Graham is currently the defensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. Before that, he served as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants. Graham has about six years of experience as a defensive coordinator. Graham was a defensive assistant in New England under Bill Belichick for seven seasons, then spent two seasons as an assistant for Steve Spagnuolo and the New York Giants. The Green Bay Packers hired Graham in 2018 to be the linebackers coach and run game coordinator. Graham never worked directly with Matt LaFleur, but the front office and the current defensive backs coach, Ryan Downard, are all familiar with Graham.

Al Harris

Harris is currently the pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears. Before coaching, Harris played eight years for the Green Bay Packers as a cornerback. Harris started coaching in 2012 as a coaching intern for the Miami Dolphins. Andy Reid then hired Harris to coach the defensive secondary for the Kansas City Chiefs. After six seasons with the Chiefs and one at Florida Atlantic University, Harris was hired by McCarthy to be the Dallas Cowboys' defensive backs coach. He eventually became the assistant head coach. Harris worked with both Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs in Dallas. Harris has learned from some highly-respected defensive coaches, including Dan Quinn, Mike Nolan, Mike Zimmer, Matt Eberflus, and Dennis Allen.

Chris Harris

Harris spent the 2025 season with the New York Jets. He started the season as the defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, but took over as the interim defensive coordinator last month. That's the extent of Harris' defensive coordinator experience. Most of his coaching experience comes as a defensive backs coach. Harris has worked under Gus Bradley, Ron Rivera, Jack Del Rio, Mike Vrabel, and Dennard Wilson. He also worked with former Packers' assistant Justin Outten, who Matt LaFleur knows well. LaFleur already has some familiarity with Harris, having reportedly interviewed him in 2021. Harris was said to have "crushed" his interview with the team.

Jim Leonhard

Leonhard is currently the assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos. Packer fans know him best from his time as the defensive coordinator and interim head coach at the University of Wisconsin. He made his move to the NFL in 2024 under Sean Payton and Vance Joseph, but it almost happened in 2021. It was reported that Matt LaFleur offered Leonhard the defensive coordinator job for the Packers, but Leonhard opted to stay at Wisconsin instead. “It was me choosing UW,” Leonhard said at the time. "I want to stay at UW. I want to be at this level right now. Extremely flattered. Awesome opportunity. But it was not the right time for me to go back to the NFL." Leonhard has strong ties to Rex Ryan from his playing days. Leonhard interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator position last week.

Daronte Jones

Jones is currently the defensive pass game coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. Before that, he was primarily a defensive backs coach. Jones has started getting buzz as a candidate for defensive coordinator positions across the league. He's already interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys' vacant defensive coordinator position. Jones coached at the college level for the first 15 years of his coaching career, including one season as the defensive backs coach at the University of Wisconsin under Paul Chryst and Dave Aranda. Jones hasn’t been in the NFL for very long, but he has worked for some bright defensive minds (Lou Anarumo, Brian Flores, Vance Joseph, and Mike Zimmer) and is already well-respected.

Wink Martindale

Martindale was the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan last season. Before that, he served as the defensive coordinator for both the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens. He has about seven years of defensive coordinator experience at the NFL level. He learned from Rob Ryan, Mike Nolan, and Don Pees. Matt LaFleur has an immense amount of respect for Martindale. "He’s a guy that does a great job just putting people in position," said LaFleur. "He presents a lot of different challenges for an offense. I've got a ton of respect for what he’s capable of doing and what he’s done over the course of his career. You never feel easy going against a team that he’s coaching because you know that he can deploy a number of different blitzes and a number of different looks.”

Raheem Morris

Morris was most recently the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons before being fired after the 2025 season. Before his most recent stint as a head coach, Morris served as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. Morris has a lot of NFL experience, including six years as a head coach and four years as a defensive coordinator. He’s also held the positions of assistant head coach, defensive pass game coordinator, offensive pass game coordinator, defensive backs coach, and wide receivers coach. He comes from a strong coaching tree, working under the likes of Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan, Dan Quinn, Kyle Shanahan, Jay Gruden, and Sean McVay. Matt LaFleur is a close friend of Morris. The two worked together for two years in Washington and two years in Atlanta. After Morris was fired, LaFleur said, "I've talked to Raheem. Certainly, never want to see that period, but especially for one of your closest friends. I thought he did a really nice job with that push at the end of the season."

Zach Orr

Orr was most recently the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, a position he’s held for two seasons. Most of his coaching experience is in Baltimore, primarily as both an outside and inside linebackers coach. Matt LaFleur already thinks highly of Orr, having interviewed him back in 2024. Aaron Wilson reported that LaFleur offered the vacant defensive coordinator job to Orr, but he turned down the offer and became the defensive coordinator in Baltimore. Orr hasn’t been coaching for very long, but he has worked under John Harbaugh, Wink Martindale, and Mike Macdonald. His brother Chris played for the University of Wisconsin. Harbaugh's firing allows Orr to interview for any jobs, but there's a possibility he follows Harbaugh to New York.

Christian Parker

Parker is currently the passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Parker is considered by many to be a rising star in the coaching ranks. His coaching career started at the college level before transitioning to the NFL. His NFL career started as a defensive quality control coach for Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers in 2019. Between his time in Green Bay and Philadelphia, Parker worked as the defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos. He’s served under Mike Pettine, Vic Fangio, Ejiro Eviro, Sean Payton, and Nick Sirianni. Parker reportedly interviewed for Green Bay’s defensive coordinator position in 2024 before Green Bay ultimately hired Jeff Hafley. "He's a guy that I hold in high regard, just by the quality of work he did when he was here with us," Matt LaFleur said back in November. "Whenever we go against a secondary that he's coaching, they're fundamentally sound."

Aubrey Pleasant

Pleasant is currently the assistant head coach and defensive passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. Pleasant doesn’t have any experience as a defensive coordinator. The majority of his coaching experience has come as a defensive backs coach. Matt LaFleur knows Pleasant well. The two coached together in Washington during the 2013 season and in Los Angeles during the 2017 season. LaFleur even brought Pleasant to Green Bay during the 2022 season as an offensive consultant. “He’s a really knowledgeable guy when it comes to the game,” LaFleur said about Pleasant. "He’s just a guy I’ve always really respected how he works.” Pleasant has similar coaching connections to LaFleur, having worked with Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan, Jay Gruden, Joe Barry, Sean McVay, Wade Phillips, and Raheem Morris.

Jim Schwartz

Schwartz has served as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns for the last three seasons. Schwartz has a ton of NFL experience, including 17 years as a defensive coordinator and five as a head coach. He was named the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2023. He’s been coaching since 1989. He got his start with the Cleveland Browns under Bill Belichick. He’s also worked under Marvin Lewis, Jeff Fisher, Doug Marrone, Doug Peterson, Mike Vrabel, and Kevin Stefanski. Schwartz is known for having an aggressive, attacking scheme that generates pressure without blitzing, one that Matt LaFleur has a lot of respect for. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Jim Schwartz," LaFleur said after losing to the Browns last season. "He was better than us today. Better than me specifically."

Anthony Weaver

Weaver is currently the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. He has three years of experience as a defensive coordinator, but has spent the majority of his coaching career as a defensive line coach. Weaver’s NFL coaching career began with the New York Jets in 2012 under Rex Ryan, with whom he played for during his playing career. He’s learned from Romeo Crennel, John Harbaugh, Wink Martindale, and Mike Macdonald. Weaver also worked for Mike Pettine, Mike Vrabel, and Mike McDaniel, three coaches whom Matt LaFleur knows well. Interestingly enough, Weaver hired former Packer defensive coordinator Joe Barry as the linebackers coach in Miami.

Aaron Whitecotton

Whitecotton spent the 2025 season as the defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys. The Green Bay Packers interviewed Whitecotton last offseason for their vacant defensive line coach position. Before moving to Dallas, Whitecotton worked under Robert Saleh in New York and San Francisco. Whitecotton also worked for Sean McDermott and Leslie Frazier in Buffalo. The Dallas Cowboys interviewed Whitecotton for their vacant defensive coordinator position. He will also call the defense at the East-West Shrine Bowl later this month.

Joe Whitt Jr.

Whitt Jr. was the defensive coordinator for Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders for the last two seasons, but was fired at the end of the season. Before that, he worked under Quinn in Dallas and Atlanta as the defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach. Whitt Jr. worked for the Green Bay Packers from 2008-2018, but his path never crossed with Matt LaFleur. That said, both Whitt Jr. and LaFleur worked for Quinn. Trevon Diggs and Micah Parsons both were Cowboys while Whitt Jr. was on staff. Whitt Jr. is widely respected as a defensive backs coach, but his experience as a defensive coordinator is shaky.

Dennard Wilson

Wilson is currently the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator. He’s been in that position for the last two seasons. Before that, he served as a defensive backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Los Angeles Rams. His experience also includes being a defensive passing game coordinator, defensive quality control coach, and pro scout. Matt LaFleur interviewed Wilson for the defensive coordinator position back in 2024 before hiring Jeff Hafley, but Wilson took the job in Tennessee. Wilson worked under Jeff Fisher, Todd Bowles, Gregg Williams, Nick Sirianni, Jonathan Gannon, John Harbaugh, and Mike Macdonald.

This is a very thorough list, but it wouldn't surprise me if Morris has the inside track. He's super-experienced as a defensive coach, and as stated, MLF is a friend of his. When our new CB(s) arrive, Morris's background as a DB coach should help them. I don't think there will a huge demand for him as a head coach, so he'll probably be available.

Those of you wanting Flores: he's a strong head coach candidate, so I don't think we'll get the opportunity to hire him. If anyone remembers his time as a Dolphins HC, he can be very creative and not afraid to pull out all the stops.

We'll see if league ownership forgets Flores' beef with the league and actually decides to hire him. Even if he doesn't get a HC position, he's going to make a small fortune as a DC for someone.

I don’t trust that it will be an aggressive DC. It will likely be more of the same.

Ed Policy has alot in common with Gute and MLF. All three are weak, and soft. They are either not serious about winning Super Bowls or they are really really bad at football. Either way they don’t deserve to be in charge of this great historic organization!

I've never, ever, heard any football coach get promoted to any position by saying he didn't want to be aggressive. Everybody says that.

Are PI penalties being aggressive? Defensive holding? Roughing the QB? How about broken/missed tackles? Do aggressive players have more or fewer of those?

Here's Defense in Today's NFL: Defense is pass defense, because most yards occur through the air, and most TDs are scored in the air. Pass defense starts with coverage, because if a player is open, even an unblocked pass rusher cannot get there in time to prevent it. Many sacks are "coverage sacks", because the defender kept the player covered long enough for the pass rush to reach home. So....coverage first. Most important. More important than stuffing the run, more important than sacking the QB.

It's a league where average QBs complete 2/3 of their passes. Despite everything. And the average completion is over 10 yards. So, pass defense, pass coverage, tackling and limiting YAC.....that's where I'd like to see the DC focus. He's not going to get a lot of new ingredients to cook with.

If he's not hired away by someone else, I think the "easy" choice will be Covington. The NE defense wasn't special with him as DC in 2024 with Jerod Mayo, though, and I can't say he lit the night on fire with the Packers DL this season.

Packers like to promote ineptness from within so it makes perfect sense that they would promote our inept DL coach, who did virtually nothing with our DL, and make him the next DC. LaFraud is probably relieved that Hafley will be leaving for HC gig elsewhere.

Rumor has it that Hafley is interested in taking several assistants with him, and Covington might be one of them.

IMO, more new coaches more better.

I’d offer Ansley before Covington if I had to pick one, but, honestly, I don’t think either are the best we could do. At this point, one would think they’d feel the need to be seen to be striving for more. Perhaps it will be offer a more interesting insight than I thought when I started to type this?

Ansley was no great shakes with the Chargers as a DC, either, but they had injury issues, too.

He can take all the Offense and Defense and ST coaches with him from what I have seen. The Defense was not a strong point in the last 4-5 games this season

I guess you didn't pay attention to the last five games after Parsons tore his ACL when we had one of the worst run defenses in the nfl. Gee, I wonder what positions Colby and Wooden play? (HEAD SLAP) Oh yeah, defensive line. Oh here's another one for you. Rashan Gary...NO sacks in the last nine games (or is it ten counting the playoffs?) Hmmm, where does he play? (2nd HEAD SLAP) Oh yeah, defensive line. Great job there Covington.

That's a lot of good coaches on that list. My picks in no specific order...

1) Jimmy Leonard
2) Raheen Morris
3) Jim Schwartz... Yes, I remember "Bounty Gate" but the dude CAN coach Defense

I just REALLY HOPE they gave LaFleur all the money he needs to hire QUALITY Assistant Coaches.

I think the hire will reflect much about the truer thought of MLF. Lackeys will rise to the top by default of the cream going to more respected HC's, teams, and Ownership. Yes, GB is deemed a long time awesome franchise, but it lacks a strong draw to come here, both player and coaches. MLF was a risk, and it looked very good in the first couple of seasons, but the gloss has been removed slowly but surely, and the results are evident to the lesser players and coaches having been brought in.

Additionally, as an aside:

Yes, I still believe Jerry Jones played an 'all out' hand and GB played an 'all-in' hand at the wrong time, and its costing and will cost more in the next couple of years. Now, whoever is drafted, and whoever remains or hired to be coaches, won't even have a 1st RD pick to try to grow, as if they could, because, we've seen so much lately, but many believe and Hope it is not true.

Parsons is not going to save this team next year or after, but he will be glorified as the player that might keep them out of last place, yeah!!! Wait, Miles Garrett can't even do that.

As for Jerrah Jones, let's see how that plays out. He traded away one guy wanting money and then traded for 4 more that do! Now he can fight with them, they're already talking about needing to release Kenny Clark and fired their DC cuz Jerry's ploy didn't work. A common result in Big-D!
On the other front, maybe the Packers could make some arrangement to speak with Sean Payton by phone for an hour per week?
He could explain how to build a real contender in 3 years with cap problems, a poor roster, a questionable QB, and a shortage of draft picks.
Unfortunately, he'd likely say "you need a good organization behind you"!
And we don't have that.

My top three:
1) Morris- (go get him)
2) Flores- (love his aggressive style)
3) Ansley- I never considered Ansley until now, but he’s as good as anyone on this list.
Side note- I’ve always liked Gus Bradley—he’s had varied success, both very good and mediocre.
Go Packers!!!

The defense returns quite a few good players from an above average defense, at least until the last 15 minutes of the season. Most of them are under contract for 2026. Enagbare and Walker are FAs. Other than that, everybody is back. Parsons, Gary, VanNess, Wyatt, Brooks, Wooden, Cooper, Mcduffie, Hopper, Sorrell, Nixon, Valentine, Williams, Bullard, Oladapo, ....many others. The point, is, there's stuff to work with.

Despite how horribly the defense finished, during the season it kept us in every game. Points. That's going to be the bottom line for me. How many points? There's no reason that this defense should be worse than last year's. That's without adding anybody.

IMO, without injuries, the Packers can put a pretty good defense on the field. If we keep the coverages simple, and just let our good players play, we should be OK on defense.

Nice list with plenty of capable guys. I would like to see someone with plenty of experience and good results and not promote from within (Ansley). Very important hire and Hafley was a good surprise for two years though still lacked experience to adjust when it was needed.

Did a decent job in his two years. The team added quite a bit of talent during his tenure, including McKinney, Williams, Bullard, Cooper, and Parsons, but when injuries took away both Parsons and Wyatt, we just weren't quite good enough.

He'll fail in Miami. Everyone since Shula has failed in Miami. Jimmy
Johnson failed in Miami. No Trophy, not even with Marino.

I think the Dolphins job may have been the worst one available.

The Raiders at least have the top pick to look forward to.

Tua has an atrocious contract, that Miami really cannot get out of. Hill is coming off a horrific leg injury. Waddle may be a trade chip.

Not sure of their cap situation, so they could be a player for Walker.

Oh, and they play in the same division as New England, and Buffalo.

Maybe I will eat my words, but I am guessing Hafley is back on the street after 2 years.

If we review the last 20 years coming off 5 years of Dave Wannstedt at the helm:

Jim Bates 1
Nick Saban 2
Cam Cameron 1
Tony Sporano 4
Todd Bowles 1
Joe Philbin 4 (mid season firing)
Dan Campbell 1
Adam Gase 3
Brian Flores 3 (contends he was instructed to lose games)
Mike McDaniel 4

Stephan Ross has been the owner since 2009. That graveyard is full of better coaches than Hafley. Best of luck to him

Good for him. He did a decent job here, although I was never in the "Hafley walks on water" crowd. I mean he was an improvement over Barry, not exactly a very high threshold. I really believe any number of good DC's could have done as well with the talent at his disposal.

Now the question becomes...who, if anyone, does he take with him to South Beach?

Whomever the Packers hire - it will difficult to project them as much of an upgrade - if at all - over Hafley. Because bottom line - the D personnel were much more of a problem than coaching. So I'm tempering any excitement until the entire re-work of the D is completed.

Iv'e tempered my excitement to the extent that I don't care anymore-I've become strangely detached. This experience w/Policy and the MLF/Gute re-signing was a 'step too far' for me.
You are right, though, the D personnel were more of the problem than coching.

I've been waiting to see where Hafley lands and will now learn as much as possible about the 'Phins'.

With Jon-Eric Sullivan as the new Dolphins GM - the Hafley hire seems a natural.

I too have been dispirited by Ed "Status Quo" Policy. I haven't even looked at any of the draft material - which is a favorite time of the year for me. Fortunately I have the Toronto Blue Jays to follow this year.

My ideal top 3: Morris, Bradley, Martindale. Reason being, they're not young up and comers so they're not as likely to pursue head coaching gigs in the immediate future. Obviously, a huge defensive year could change that for any of them, but most of the dysfunctional owners are looking for the shiny, new thing and those are the teams most likely to be looking for a new head coach soon.

I love Al Harris, but he's probably a two year rental at most before he becomes a hot head coaching candidate. I also like Flores, but I feel like he's going to be the Raiders next head coach.

I agree. In academia, we're low enough on the totem pole that we always view college presidents as using us as a springboard, and people tend to get cranky over it. I had an older colleague say at one point: if they're doing the things that make them attractive for the next job, they must be doing good things for us.

I'd say the same about a DC. People are snarking about Hafley after the end of the season, but he did good by the Packers--especially after years of Joe Barry. The league certainly liked him.

Does anyone recall when LaFleur wanted to hire Jim Leonhard?

I think i remember reading or hearing that the Packers didn't want to pay Leonhard what he wanted.
*********
Excerpts from an article back in 2021.....

"His ties to Madison are strong, but Leonhard said he was "about out the door," signaling how close he was to taking the Packers' job, and he even talked contract numbers with LaFleur" - Zach Kruse

"......he was intrigued by the opportunity to coordinate an NFL defense for a Super Bowl contender and went through the full interview process with LaFleur." - Z. K.

A little context here. It had nothing to do with LaFleur, and you know that. Just another shot.

Leonhard has had nothing but complimentary things to say about LaFleur and appreciated their interest. At the time, he wanted to stay at UW in hopes of being named permanent HC. That didn't happen and both parties moved on. It had nothing to do with pay or not wanting to interview with LaFleur.

Yes. They offered Leonhard the job but he turned it down to stay with UW.

I personally believe he was hoping to become the future HC there, and when his opportunity came 1 year later, they ended up choosing Fickell over him. Leonhard then left. He worked with Illinois as an analyst for a year. And joined the Broncos in 2024 as the DB's coach and pass game coordinator. In 25 he was promoted to assistant HC as well.

I would love to see Jim Leonard, Brian Flores or Raheem Morris, but I think the Packers are likely to promote from within, with either Covington or Ansley. We always seem to over value our own players / coaches. I would also be o.k. with Schwartz or Parker. They'll have some good options, although we will need to move quickly with the number of openings.
I hope the DC position isn't the only opening they'll need to fill, as I feel we have a need to upgrade our staff, including the other coordinator positions.

Please do not hire from within. This could be a great opportunity for a new voice and a challenge to re-invent or at least, re-invigorate the Defense and the Locker Room. All respect and gratitude to Hafley; he was a huge positive when he came on board. Not disrespect to the coaches under Hafley currently, in fact, I wouldn't know enough to say one way or the other. Some guys are meant to be Head Coaches and some are meant to be DC's. Even if they have the opportunity to be a HC and they fail many can go back to a DC and be very successful Just look at Saleh and the job he did with a beat up 49er group. When you look around and see the successful teams such as KC with Steve S, Todd Bowles Dennis Allen. So I would like to some old guard back in such as Morris or Flores and not from within - and I want somebody also new to Green Bay - we need a new vision. Sometimes Head Coaches dont want somebody who might replace them - I always felt that you hire the best available person

I need to see 2 starting DL and another starting CB and a DE that has a pass rush finish(Sack) potential in every game and especially when it is absolutely NEEDED....Then the DC will not have to be Houdini to work with one of the worst manned defenses at multiple positions....Safety and LB group is solid...the rest need better players and Parsons needs to get healthy.

1. Flores
2. Schwartz

LaFleur needs a veteran coach who can change the culture. That culture change could bleed over to the offense and special teams.

3. Leonard
4. Al Harris
Both are young guns who played the game with passion and intensity. That cred has the potential to create a culture change. Leonard has done the job and has a more impressive resume. I would prefer him.

In any case, pay the man and get him in. Don't be cheap!

The guy who I would want above everyone is Florres. But I would put the odds of that happening at about 1% (rounding up). I think he will become a HC.

After him the guy that I want is the guy that I wanted them to get before. Jim Leonhard.

I am a Badger fan. But I have to stress this. That is not why I want him at GB. Yes its a cool story. I don't care about stories. I care about the product on the field. They had elite defenses when he was at UW. He had top 10 scoring defenses in 4 of his 5 years at UW. In 2021 he had the number 1 defense. What Leonhard was able to do with the players they had was impressive, Wisconsin didn't have many 4 or 5 star players there. But he turned them into a hell of a defense.

Leonhard was a walk-on player at UW. He didn't earn a scholarship until his senior year. He went undrafted and had a 10 year career. He knows how to work hard to accomplish his goals.

Jim wasn't ready for the NFL back when the Packers offered him the job the first time. But he has not been in the NFL the last 2 years. Was promoted to assistant HC after 1 season. That is very impressive.

I really think Leonhard is going to be a tremendous DC. Hopefully for GB.

I'm not surer if it matters who the Packers choose as their next DC. As long as this no accountability, results don't matter regime is in place even the worst possible candidate knows they can get at least 3 seasons in Green Bay regardless of how the defense performs. The other issue to consider is that it is unlikely that the Packers will spend the money required to hire the top tier candidates so it is likely they will end up with a middle of the road or worse selection.

Then they will use the propaganda machinery to extoll the "potential upside" of the new hire. Hoping for the best but I have very little confidence in the Packer management triumvirate of Policy, Gute and MLF. Thanks, Since '61

They'll need to "speculate," yes, and hope they guess right. I didn't think--if they'd canned LaF--that they'd go bidding on Stefanski or Harbaugh or any of the higher-end, recently canned HC candidates. I thought that someone like Robert Saleh--who I really like and was just hired by the Titans--would be a reach. They'd take a shot at a coordinator or riser from a prolific offensive coaching tree. This looks like the path for their DC, too. Parker has connex to the Packers in his past, and LaF seems to like the familiar.

Soooooo much whining and complaining from fans about MLF's coaching hires that didn't work out, much of it deserved, but virtually not a peep from anyone about hiring Hafley. But I guess Lafleur saw something there years before the rest of the NFL did.

Or that LaFleur brought back Tom Clements in 2022 - radio silence, even though Clements worked miracles on both Rodgers and Love. And probably also Malik Willis.

Odd...

Haley's Defense did not shine most of this season....Gute did it no favors with the CB group and DL. The DE's played pretty poorly minus Parsons...the one player away except for everything above I mentioned. If Gute can get us 2- Starting DL an xtra CB Starter and 2-DE's that don't fall off the face of the Earth when we need them and the Injured can return to form (HOPE)...we should be good enough with most any DC.

IMO there are only Brian Flores or Jim Leonhard. We need a tough no nonsense coach who expects nothing less than 100%.
Parker is intriguing but we don't have the horses the eagles have. No Mitchell or Dejean in the secondary. He has potential but I would still heavily lean to Flores with the super bowl window.
Flores would have a blast with Parsons, Cooper, McKinney, and Williams.

In 2025 the Bears defense snagged 23 INTs. Hafley's crew picked off the deadly 7. The same number of picks McKinney bagged in 2024. It seems Al Harris knows a bit about positioning his group in the correct coverages.

Packers don't tend to pay up for assistant coaches so you can forget about Flores. I also don't think Flores is a great fit. He is a blitz guy and with Parsons I want us rushing 4 more. Flores every year leads the league in blitzing to the point I am not sure he has a 2nd move. I know he is the flavor of the month at the moment but I think they can do better.

I know Packer fans will want Leonard and Harris but I would again look elsewhere. Leonard has yet to be a coordinator at the NFL level with his only real experience there was at Wisconsin. This is just looking at familiar names. Al Harris has been a raising name but his last 2 DBs units he coached where pretty average in Dallas and Chicago.

Look for a fresh name like Hafley was. They have talent on D so that should attract some young coaches looking to make a name for themselves.
