Which Packers Player Breaks Out in 2015?

Here is a look at some potential breakout players for the Green Bay Packers in 2015

The Green Bay Packers are riding on some high hopes in 2015.  Las Vegas has them favored to win Super Bowl 50, they're coming off of what should have been a championship game appearance last season and they have the reigning MVP and arguably the best quarterback in the game in Aaron Rodgers.  All offensive starters are returning and, with another year together, could produce even better numbers than they did in 2014.  The defense has added some young talent via the draft and head coach Mike McCarthy is spending more time with areas of the team other than just the offense.

It seems to be a recipe for improvement and one vital element of that gain is going to be just how much improvement some of the younger players can show year over year.  Green Bay currently has the eight-youngest roster in the NFL.  Of the other seven teams, only two of them made the postseason last year:  the Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals.  Under general manager Ted Thompson, the Packers have remained one of the younger teams in the league, but have also continued to achieve high success.  That has been because of careful talent selection and the improvement from players in their rookie years to years two and three.  So who is primed to be that breakout player for the Packers in 2015?

Before we answer that question, let's look at the past few seasons and some examples of players who were able to do just that.

On the current roster, several names come to mind.  Receiver Jordy Nelson was drafted in 2008 and by the playoff run in 2010, he turned himself into one of Rodgers' favorite targets.  A year later in 2011, Nelson was on the receiving end of several long touchdown passes from Rodgers enroute to a record-setting season for the Packers offense.  Defensive lineman Mike Daniels was a fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft and while he contributed as a rookie, Daniels took a huge step forward last year in his second and third seasons.  After posting two sacks in year one, Daniels had six-and-a-half in 2013 and five-and-a-half in 2014.  He has also become one of the vocal leaders,  not just on the defense, but for the entire team.  Running back Eddie Lacy had another 1,100 yard rushing season last year and emerged as a pass-catching threat, posting four touchdown catches.  Those are just a few.

Give credit to the Packers coaching staff, who are entrusted to get the most out of these young players.  On this week's Pulse of the Pack podcast, I singled our cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt, Jr. as one that deserves a lot of credit for the work he has done in the past in developing two undrafted free agents into solid starters:  Tramon Williams and Sam Shields.  Shields will start again for the Packers this season.  He has also helped bring along Casey Hayward, who should push for a starting spot and Micah Hyde, who continues to develop into a solid role player on defense.  The Packers drafted two cornerbacks with their first two picks this year and Whitt once again will have his work cut out for him.  Offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett successfully transitioned from running backs coach to wide receivers coach and has helped mentor Nelson, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams through their first few years.

There were three players that I saw as most likely to step up this year:  Adams, tight end Richard Rodgers and defensive lineman Datone Jones.  Those of you who follow my writings and the few Pulse shows that I've done have heard me talk a lot about the 46-yard touchdown catch and run Adams had against the Cowboys in last year's divisional playoffs.  It was the type of play that most rookies don't make and it was exactly that play that prompted the Packers to draft Adams in the second round in 2014.

Rodgers has heaped praise on Adams this offseason, saying he has superstar potential.  Those aren't words the quarterback throws around loosely and since he's the one throwing the ball Adams' way, we can expect to see Rodgers targeting the former Fresno State standout quite a bit this year.  Some may say it's easy to break out when you have Aaron Rodgers throwing you the ball, but fans who have followed this offense for a while know that there are many options for Rodgers and he has not been shy to say that he doesn't look for guys who don't have his trust on the field.  Adams quickly built that trust and rapport with Rodgers has year and saw many opportunities as the season moved along.

I mentioned Jones earlier and it's his contributions this season that may end up being most important.  On a defense that struggled to stop the run early last season and that had to move their best player to another position to help, they're looking for improvement in most every area.  Jones enters his third season and still has high expectations as a former first-rounder.  He showed some flashes last season, but needs to become a part of the rotation up front that the team can count on consistently.

As for the other Rodgers, Richard, he stands a good chance at elevating his game from a year ago.  The Rodgers-to-Rodgers combo is going to certainly help the tight end see more targets and catches this season.  The Packers will likely insert Richard into the starting lineup and integrate more of the tight end into the offense.  The younger Rodgers proved very valuable later in the season and had an incredible touchdown catch of his own against the Cowboys in the playoffs.  (After all of those struggles against Dallas in the 90's, it's nice to see the Packers get a playoff win against them and also spring two young players into their second seasons!)

Of these three, I'm going with Adams to break out most in 2015.  His existing role in the offense and the confidence he has already instilled in Rodgers is the best recipe for more success over last year.  Add in that Nelson is still very capable and a newly-signed and energized Randall Cobb and you have three options that will be giving opposing defenses fits.  The swagger and big-play potential that Adams already possesses thrown in with a full year under his belt offer the most potential to add to the Packers success this year.  Whether the defense can take that vital step forward or not could become less relevant if Adams can push the offense to even bigger heights, and there's no reason why he shouldn't.

I would choose HHCD to have the biggest 2nd year jump. But from those 3 (Adams,Jones and Rodgers), I agree with the Adams pick.

I have no idea at all but there sure are more candidates this year. Adams seems like simple choice but that concerns me, Hope all the hype is not a jinx.

Casey Hayward will be a superstar, if he's healthy.

I'm hoping that Sam Barrington turns into a monster at inside linebacker. There have been a lot of high draft picks spent on the defense. It's time for the D to shine.

I agree with Tundra that the good news is many of us could list a bunch of players. Mine personally would be (pretty much in order): HHCD, Raji, Barrington, Datone, and Pennel on defense and Adams, Bakh, Janis, Tolzien, Abby, and Linsley on offense. I'm high on some rookies, too, so this season could be fun to watch. I'd like to see what Guion can do at DE, too.

I see that Peppers kid finally turning the corner. In his 14th season he masters the Jumpy Geathers human fork-lift move.

Seriously, I'm going to go with Drealyn's pick HHCD. And strangely enough it's aided by another breakout star - DAT ONE. With Jones supplying an new arsenal of rip-and-spin moves, opposing QB's will fling more flutter balls that will be picked off by the free ranging Dix. Add to that better tackling technique and HaHa will be laughing all the way to the Pro-Bowl.

With Hayward going outside, look for more PT and productivity from Micah Hyde as the slot defender. His physicality and willingness to tackle proves to RB's & WR's - you can run but you can't get past Hyde.

Interesting choice, Jasone... I have problems with Davante pick. It is become almost tradition that player pointed out by Mike McCarthy as player who had excellent OTAs and Minicamp fail in his production on the game level (last year 2 of them - Jarret Boykin and B. J.).
I agree with most of you that young players we can get much better performances are: Mike Pennel, Ha-Ha, Sam Barrington, Datone, Casey... I will put here Elliot, Mike Neal and Nick Perry, as last two are playing for contract. But my pick of surprise is Abby!
Also, I expect surprise contribution from rookies - Quinten Rollins, Ty Montgomery, Aaron and Gunter (I think he will win roster spot, if not PS almost certain). Randall (as rookie) is already almost there. So this will not be surprise...
Only question for me is 3rd RB. I know they like Neal, but Taz is serious competition. It will be very interesting training camp, as well as very interesting 4 pre-season games....

I like the idea of Carl Bradford making a big jump as ILB. He showed last year he was not going to set the world on fire as OLB and needed some time to learn a position very different from what he did as a college DE.

I'm hoping he sets a tone as ILB. He is a solid built guy at 250+lbs with good hands - instincts - leaping ability, and explosive tackling. That could help him shine at ILB.

I am quietly hoping he comes on strong. It will seem that much a shock to have a terror at ILB for a change.

Jason - of the 3 players mentioned in your article I agree with you that Adams is the most likely to have a solid season in 2015. However, the player that the Packers need to have a breakout season is Datone Jones. Daniels is the only consistent player on the DL and if the DL is to improve in 2015 another player needs to step up and have a solid season. Jones is a first round pick entering his 3rd season, it's time for him to make an impact. He needs to stay healthy, be consistent and make some plays. If not we may have another season of weak DL play resulting in weak ILB play. It will be critical to have solid DL play in front of what will be an inexperienced ILB corps. If Raji and Guion step up as well our defense looks a whole lot better than last year. For now we just need to wait for the first 3-4 regular season games. Thanks, Since '61

Some great feedback and discussion! Want to thank all of my new readers since coming over to CHTV and to those who came over from ALLGBP.

I didn't throw Ha Ha on this list because as a safety, it can be tough to be a true playmaker and "break out" that way. That said, I think he's better this year and alters opposing offensive schemes. He'll be good for a while, but guys like Ed Reed and Nick Collins only come around so often.

In regards to the comments on Joe Whitt, based on all of the positive remarks about his coaching expertise why do we very seldom hear that he is being considered by others teams ? His track record of results are so obvious. In the same theme, we also hear little about teams approaching our Assistant Head Coach Winston Moss who now coaches both linebacker positions after Kevin Greene left, it always puzzled me that someone with that additional title coached only the inside linebacker positions.

that is hella true.

i dunno about the other guys, but he seems like the kinda guy I would want to work under. He pushes you, and expects nothing but the best, and is also willing to help. I guess he might not be interested in a head coaching job, but I dunno.

Concerning Winston Moss, I think he doesn't want to leave.

Hell, I wouldn't.
