Which Players Should Be Practice Squad Priorities?

Brian Gutekunst should make these players his main priority post roster cutdowns.

Next Tuesday marks one of the most important dates on the NFL calendar: cutdown day. A few years ago, the league shifted from staggered roster reductions to one single deadline. In just one afternoon, the Packers — along with every other team — will trim their offseason roster from 90 players down to the regular season allotment of 53. Over the following 24 hours, the 17-man practice squad will begin to take shape. Players who don’t make the active roster will have the opportunity to return in a developmental role, provided another team doesn’t claim them first.

That’s always the risk. Packers fans remember 2017, when quarterback Taysom Hill slipped through the cracks and landed in New Orleans, leaving Green Bay with nothing in return. While this year’s roster doesn’t feature a player with that level of intrigue, there are still a handful Brian Gutekunst should make every effort to keep in town.

Amar Johnson-

During camp, with MarShawn Lloyd and Emmanuel Wilson sidelined, Amar Johnson looked like a candidate to make the 53. With Wilson healthy and Chris Brooks securing the third-down role thanks to his blocking, Johnson’s best path now appears to be the practice squad.

Johnson has made his case with big plays. In Week 1 of the preseason, he was the lone highlight on offense for Green Bay when he ripped off a 39-yard touchdown run against the Jets. In Week 2 versus the Colts, he showed toughness, powering through the line and dragging defenders into the end zone.

The competition for a practice squad spot likely comes down to Johnson and Israel Abanikanda. Abanikanda offers value as a return man, but Johnson has flashed more as a pure runner, with burst, vision, and balance that have stood out in camp. Gutekunst could go either way, but Johnson feels like the higher-upside stash.

Nazir Stackhouse-

Stackhouse was a popular post-draft pick to make the 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent, but the numbers may work against him. With Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Colby Wooden, Brooks, and rookie Warren Brinson all ahead of him, carrying a sixth defensive lineman could be a luxury the Packers can’t afford.

Roster decisions at other positions may seal his fate. If Green Bay opts for extra depth at linebacker or tight end for special teams help, players like Kristian Welch or Ben Sims would likely sneak onto the roster leaving  Stackhouse as the odd man out.

Injuries complicate matters as well. MarShawn Lloyd and Barryn Sorrell are both expected to miss “some” time, according to Matt LaFleur, though neither appears headed for a lengthy absence. That could keep Sorrell off injured reserve and force the team to save his roster spot. Brinson, meanwhile, edges out his fellow Georgia Bulldog Stackhouse thanks to his athleticism, versatility and status as a draft pick. If Green Bay can sneak Stackhouse through waivers, he’d be an ideal practice squad candidate.

Micah Robinson-

The battle for the fifth cornerback job remains undecided heading into the final preseason game. Rookie Micah Robinson and second-year corner Kalen King are neck and neck. I Myself have been going back and fourth on who makes the final cut, so if you prefer Robinson you wont get a huge argument from me.

In the end I went with King because he offers more versatility, having shown he can play in the slot, and has built on a strong camp after spending last season on the practice squad. Robinson, a seventh-round pick, has been steady but may be easier to retain. Teams might be more likely to take a flier on King, and if cut he might want to take a fresh start elsewhere. Robinson could be more inclined to stay in Green Bay and wait for his opportunity.

If their play has truly been even, the safer move may be to keep King on the 53 and slide Robinson onto the practice squad.

With recent rule changes, the practice squad has taken on greater importance. Teams can elevate two players per week and bring any player up to the active roster three times in a season, giving coaches far more flexibility. The addition of up to six veteran spots also allows teams to stash experienced contributors who don’t crack the initial 53.

For the Packers, that could mean keeping players like Kristian Welch, Isaiah Simmons, or Mecole Hardman in the fold if roster math pushes them out on cutdown day.

One way or another, the practice squad will be a crucial piece of Green Bay’s roster strategy and will be fluid all season. Keep an eye on the transaction wire in the 24 hours following cutdowns to see which 17 players Gutekunst and his staff manage to retain. It’s one of my favorite days of the year.

I don't know why you "stash" Simmons on the PS hoping he will finally learn how to play NFL LB in his 6th year.

Hardman too. Neyor, Hicks, Johnson should be more in the mix on the PS than him. Nothing to offer over those guys as a WR. And his return skills aren't at all special now.

At RB, if Lloyd's stay in the tub is for a few games, still keep 4...something the Packers seemed likely to do before Lloyd go hurt again. They run over half the O snaps so even #4 RB will get some work during the season. Johnson should be rostered and can return kicks too...Abanikanda to the PS. Keep these two nice backs around.

Amar Johnson becomes the new Lloyd...a change up to JJ, Wilson, Brooks. He's a good receiver too. Fast and a chiseled 5"11" and 205...he'd be the smallest back on the 53 with a ton of productive college results.

Yep, Simmons and Hardman are definitely NOT practice squad candidates.

I don't think Amar Johnson loked like a candidate for the 53 when Emmanuel Wilson was hurt. Wilson's injury was minor, and his return was expected. Now that Marshawn Lloyd is injured again, though, Johnson has entered the conversation for RB #4 behind Jacobs, Wilson, and Brooks. However, I would still roll with 3 RBs and use that roster spot for an extra DT or DE.

Agreed that if they can't keep 6 DEs, Stackhouse looks like the odd man out at this point, but it's very close with Wooden and Brinson.

I don't think it's just King vs. Robinson competing for CB #5. Ballentine and Hadden are right in the mix as well. I think they will end up putting three of those players on the practice squad. Right now it looks like King or Ballentine has the best chance to make the 53, but any of those four would not surprise me.

If Kenny Clark is our primary run stuffer, then I think we will regret it. Brinson is better attacking at this point. Wooden and Banks are more mobile but less stout on the back foot, as is Wyatt. That’s without considering how it affects Clark’s potential to disrupt consistently and overall snap count.

I keep coming back to the same question: If getting a run-stuffing DT was important, why did they not even bother to draft one? Stackhouse was a nice catch as a UFDA, but they would've lost out on him if he had been drafted or signed by another team.

At this point, though, if I were them, I might find a way to keep all six DTs.

It was important enough to use Slaton heavily last year. Why did they not draft a rusher early either? Perhaps they simply felt the value proposition was less than a WR, RT, and so on when they picked. We were light last year. This year we are even lighter if we Stackhouse is omitted—only Clark and Brinson are over 310.. It showed visibly at times.

I suppose if you want to gift Detroit and Chicago an invitation to grind us down then it’s a good strategy. Thats Detroits game plan anyway. Chicago it’s a lot of pressure off their QB. One way to a new GM and HC.

I think I have an answer for you Greg.

By all accounts, this was a "deep" draft at the DT position. Secondly, you really only need to have one big run plugger on defense, much like you only need one center on offense.

So the personnel guys looked at the supply of run pluggers to replace Slaton, and they looked at the probably demand, and they thought there was a pretty good chance they could get a guy late in the draft, which they did in Brinson.

Brinson played in a good conference, and he was one of the biggest, tallestbroadest players in the country. We could get some good snaps out of him,/Stackhouse was a bonus and we jumped on it. Now we've doubled our chances of having a big horse right in the middle.

I'd like to keep them both. In my experience, nothing stops the run better than a guy that just makes a big pile right where the hole +is supposed to be.

I think Kenny is going after the QB this year or Copper right behind him.

Kenny get doubled. 55-65 percent of the time

So other dog needs to step up and make tackles

Wyatt, Wooden and especially Brooks are liabilities against the run. Clark is good against the run when he remembers to emphasize that aspect of his game or the situation is obvious. Strangely enough, TJ Slaton was less stout than one expected and quicker than anticipated. Although Stackhouse and Brinson made some plays during the first 3 days of padded practices, they at best have only flashed occasionally since then.

I imagine they keep Brinson, the more well-rounded player, on the 53. Despite some fans having adaptable memories, Slaton was not all that good against the run. One of Brinson and Stackhouse likely will adequately replace the modest contributions of Slaton in 2026. There might be some downgrade from Slaton in 2025.

Not a knock on Johnson at all, but I think Abanikanda's value as a KR is a little understated. You'll see a lot more returns this season due to the ball being placed so far out on touchbacks, so this skill becomes more in demand.

We have a fair amount of KR depth. On punts it’s Hardman or Reed and Nixon in emergencies (that’s not always looked great) unless we hit the waiver wire for another KR, but likely they are no more central to O or D than Hardman.

It's hard to argue for keeping 7 DTs, and that's where either Stackhouse or Brinson is. They're both good enough so somebody might claim them if we expose them.

Amar Johnson would be my choice for the 4th RB at this point. Lloyd...what can you say? I don't really see him as a factor on the 2025 team, and we should just put him on IR this year. Next year, Wilson will leave in FA so the #2 spot behind Jacobs becomes vacant and Lloyd could certainly compete if he can stay healthy .

I think Kaelen King makes the 53 man squad, but you can never have too many guys who can cover and tackle. Micah Robinson would certainly be a PS priority for us.

I agree with LP above on Simmons and Hardman. I think we have better choices for the 53 and for the practice squad.

If you have 7 genuinely roster worthy guys and only 6 spots, then an effort to trade becomes likely: swapping for a player or trading for a later draft pick. Teams won’t do that until after the final game (injuries and maybe evaluation), but a team still in that situation likely tries.

King has been rising all camp. He has played a lot of snaps but has barely been targeted because of his sticky coverage. His tackling has been good too.

After his 2022 season at Penn State he was being mentioned as a potential 1st or 2nd round pick for the draft. Alas, he had a big fall off in 2023 and fortunate to be drafted. Maybe Hafley is seeing the 2022 version of King now when he had 3 INTs and 15 PBUs.

So If Lloyd is out that leaves Wilson (also nursing injury) Brooks and Johnson. Yet, you choose Brooks because he is supposedly a better blocker? Seriously? I see Johnson with the highest potential on the team. In fact it is not just potential. Just watch the film! He is arguably the best RB we have and should be in the mix as number 2 RB. There is your thunder and lighting with Jacobs and Johnson. I see Wilson and Brooks competing for 3 and 4 until (or IF and when) Lloyd comes back.

If Lloyd is indeed out, then they have 2 choices: abandon the role they picked him to add or roster Johnson and trust him. He’s not Wilson but he is a smaller but faster outside the tackles capable player. Go safe or be aggressive: choose urgency not comfort? I’d love Fitzgerald on the PS in case of injury, but otherwise his 75 yards on the year receiving (typical LaFleur 3rd TE stats could be obtained from a couple of well blocked Johnson outside runs.

Wilson backs up Jacobs and allows that aspect to continue seamlessly. Brooks is simply there to protect, a role we’d be wiser to have the third TE handle. Lumpkin is a better lead blocker, can genuinely block in line and can catch about as well as Brooks. We could also use Belton as a non catching TE blocker/protector. I don’t mind, but not at the cost of keeping a favorite who won’t elevate us elsewhere.

This roster cut down will say a lot is out how serious we are improving the run, freeing Kraft, protecting and how well we have highlighted what we aren’t good at and need to change and whether we can make tough and sometimes unglamorous choices. If the roster avoids that then I think it’s going to lead to underperforming and eventual regime change. It’s not just at RB/TE. We need to aspire to be better, not to avoid the risk that entails.

Brooks was just as effective running the ball as Wilson last year- albeit we had a limited sample size. If Brooks' running and receiving remain as effective with extended use as they did in limited use, he'd literally be Wilson but a better blocker.

Lots of caveats in that, but Brooks isn't just a blocker.

I confess I don't have much of an impression about Lumpkin. Per his RAS score, he has long arms, modest speed, poor agility. He spent almost 3 weeks on a practice squad in 2023 and 10 days on the PS in 2024, all with the Packers. He has never appeared in an NFL game. Altogether, he earned $37K in PS weekly pay over two years and $30K signing bonus from NE as a priority UDFA in 2023. He likely took advantage of the 6 week workout period in April through early June to earn $9K in 2023 and another $10K in 2025 (he was not on a 90-man roster in 2024 during that period of time). I wonder if he is higher than the 5th TE in the minds of the coaches?

If I read correctly, you would roster Kraft, Musgrave, and Lumpkin with Fitzgerald to the PS (along with one of Sims/Swinson to the PS, I imagine). That's bold, I give you that. Lumpkin has gotten some run during TC. It is hard to get a read on how non-OL or DL blockers are doing in TC.

Emannuel Wilson is not nursing an injury. He's healthy. He played on Saturday and looked fine, and he's practiced all week. Amar Johnson is interesting, but I don't see him as arguably the best RB or in the mix for #2. So far he is one of many RBs we've had over the years who have looked good in the preseason. Some of them have panned out (Wilson) but most of them have not.

Amar Johnson a gamer……practice whatever. A gamer

This team has so much talent but hurt….i think they need 2 or 3 days off after Pre season game and let body rest..

Get on an afternoon schedule next two weeks before first two games .

Look at film. Rest. Look at film.

Get more reps for Belton or someone we can pick up…

Love hurt last year first game with a cheap shot to his knee
