Lions Sign QB Shaun Hill to One-Year Extension

Backup quarterback provides insurance behind starter Matthew Stafford.

John Niyo of the Detroit News reports the Detroit Lions have signed veteran quarterback Shaun Hill to a one-year contract extension.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Hill, 30, is slated to earn $1.5 million dollars in 2010, the final season in a 3-year, $6 million dollar contract Hill signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2008.

The 49ers traded Hill to the Lions on March 14 in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Hill had become expendable after the 49ers reached a two-year deal with David Carr, the first overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft.

Hill, who is expected to compete with Drew Stanton for the top backup job behind starter Matthew Stafford, has completed 61.7% of his pass attempts for 3,490 yards, with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and a carer passer rating of 87.3.
