John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports Neil Racker has won the Houston Texans' kicking competition.
That means Kris Brown will be moved off the roster before Saturday's 6pm ET deadline. Brown, who began his professional career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was the last member of the Texans' inaugural 2002 team.
Brown is the franchise's all-time leading scored (767 points), and for his career, has hit on 77.3% of his 326 field goal attempts. Brown struggled in 2009, converting on just 21-of-32 field goal attempts, with five of his misses coming from inside 39 yards.
Brown was signed to a four-year, $10.25 million dollar extension last off-season, which included a $2.25 million dollar signing bonus, and will earn Brown $1.75 million dollars in 2010.
The Texans signed Rackers to a two-year deal in April.
A sixth-round pick (169th overall) out of Illinois by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2000, Rackers spent three seasons in Cincinnati before joining the Cardinals in 2003.
Over his 10-year career, Rackers has been successful on 78.2% of his field goal attempts, with a career long of 55 yards. Rackers' best season came in 2005, when he was 40-of-42 on field goal attempts, including 6-of-7 from beyond 50 yards, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors after the season.
This pre-season, Brown was 4-of-5 on field goal attempts, with his lone miss coming from over 50 yards. Rackers was 5-for-5, and hit his one attempt from 50+ yards. Rackers' other four field goals were within 29 yards.
