Seahawks HC Pete Carroll Rules Out T.O.

Despite persistent rumors that the Seattle Seahawks are interested in signing veteran free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens, head coach Pete Carroll shot down the possibility during an appearance on a local radio show in Seattle.

Despite persistent rumors that the Seattle Seahawks are interested in signing veteran free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens, head coach Pete Carroll shot down the possibility during an appearance on the Kevin Calabro Show on 710 ESPN Seattle.

"We won't be able to do that this time around," Carroll said. "We're going to continue with the guys that we've got...We're really looking to get the young guys going."

Carroll mentioned that he was on the San Francisco 49ers staff when Owens entered the league, and wishes him the very best, but that Owens was "not the right guy for us at this time."

The Seahawks have over $12 million invested in 32-year old T.J. Houshmandzadeh and 31-year old Deion Branch, both of whom missed considerable time during the OTAs and mini-camps with injuries. Branch's age, salary ($5.47M), and injury history make him a prime candidate to be released, which could happen if one of the Seahawks' younger receivers shows promise in training camp.

Seattle also used a third-round pick in 2009 on Deon Butler, and a second-round pick in 2010 on Golden Tate, both of whom are expected to play significant roles in an offense that will utilize more 2-tight end sets. Ben Obomanu, Mike Williams, Ruvell Martin, Isaiah Stanback, Mike Hass and Sean Morey are competing for the two or three receiver spots at the back-end of the roster, where special teams prowess is often the determining factor.
