Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini isn't sure how the team's quarterback derby is going to play out, but if Seneca Wallace doesn't earn a starting job, he'll be active on Sundays, Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository reports.

"Regardless of how it works," Mangini said. "Seneca’s going to have plays in there where he’ll be involved, and maybe he’ll be involved with Josh (Cribbs), and we can have some fun with that."

When Wallace was with the Seattle Seahawks, he was frequently referred to as the best athlete on the team. That reputation grew, thanks in large part to his electrifying, over-the-shoulder 28-yard reception in the 2005 NFC Championship Game against the Carolina Panthers. Despite that, then-Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren was reluctant to use Wallace, who was the team's #2 quarterback behind starter Matt Hasselbeck, in offensive packages.

That changed last season, when Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp made a concerted effort to get Wallace more involved in the offense. Dubbed the "Senecat" by 710 ESPN Seattle radio host Kevin Calabro, Wallace would line up as a wide receiver, or as the quarterback with Hasselbeck lined up on the outside.

Wallace caught a 24-yard pass from Hasselbeck in the season-opener, and would catch a 5-yard pass in a Week 10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. A gadget play against the Dallas Cowboys, where Wallace took the snap, handed off to Edgerrin James, who pitched the ball to Hasselbeck, who attempted a pass to Wallace fell incomplete.

Overall, Wallace completed 3-of-5 passes for 48 yards out of the "Senecat" package, and with Wallace taking shotgun snaps on read-option running plays, the Seahawks had -2 yards rushing on three attempts, including a 9-yard loss by Wallace on a 3rd-and-2 play against the Minnesota Vikings.

Perhaps between a different offensive coordinator, a better offensive line, and the involvement of a dynamic athlete like Joshua Cribbs, Wallace will have more fun executing these kinds of plays.
