Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed Matt Stewart, a 30-year old linebacker from Vanderbilt who is attempting to reinvent himself as a long-snapper.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A fourth-round pick (102nd overall) by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001, Stewart totaled 291 tackles, including 8 quarterback sacks, and an interception in 93 games between 2001 and 2006 with the Falcons (2001-04) and Cleveland Browns (2006).

Stewart missed the 2007 season with a shoulder injury, and went to training camp with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. Stewart totaled six tackles during the pre-season, but was released at the end of training camp and did not hook on with another team.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips, Stewart's former defensive coordinator in Atlanta, brought Stewart on with a one-year contract last off-season, and despite tying for the team leading the team with 15 total tackles, Stewart was cut at the end of training camp.

Stewart has always been a top performer on special teams, leading the Falcons in special teams tackles as a rookie with 13. Of his 291 career tackles, 37 have come on special teams.

Greg Warren has handled the long-snapping duties for the Steelers over the last few seasons, but for the second consecutive off-season, is coming off a season-ending knee injury. The Steelers waived Jared Retkofsky last Friday.
