Texans TE Owen Daniels Expected to Miss Training Camp

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak does not expect tight ends Owen Daniels or Anthony Hill to participate in the team's 2010 training camp, Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com reports.

"If I had to go to one place that’s going to be the sticking point throughout camp as we work, it’s our tight end position, because O.D. (Daniels) and Anthony Hill will not be participating in training camp," Kubiak said on Wednesday. "You go carrying six tight ends when you get through training camp, you’ve got other problems at other spots, so we’ve got some work to do from that standpoint."

Daniels and Hill are both recovering from torn ACLs that ended their 2009 seasons.

Daniels, who had 40 catches for 519 yards and 4 touchdowns in 7+ games prior to his injury, was on his towards a career year, which could have resulted in a second straight Pro Bowl and a lucrative long-term contract extension. A restricted free agent, Daniels has not yet signed his one-year tender, which will pay him $3.168 million dollars in 2010. (Daniels is expected to sign his tender before June 15)

Kubiak adds that Daniels is ahead of schedule, and will likely be back ahead of Hill, a 2009 fourth-round pick who was injured on the Texans' final offensive play during a blowout win over the Seattle Seahawks in December.

Hill (6-5, 265) caught one pass for 9 yards last season.

The absence of Daniels and Hill means tight end Joel Dreessen, who'd "take a bullet" for head coach Gary Kubiak, has an excellent opportunity to show what he can do during training camp.

Kubiak would be happier with some good blocking and a few catches on third down.
