Packers 23 Vikings 6 Game Balls & Lame Calls

Packers put together a dominating performance at home to kick off their divisional stretch.

The Packers began the most crucial stretch of their schedule in impressive fashion. Whether or not you want to call it a "statement" victory versus the struggling Vikings, you can't deny that the final score feels extremely satisfying. After weeks upon weeks of having to grind out last minute, one score games, it felt so good to be able to just put a team away. The Packers defense did just that in the second half, allowing only four yards over fifteen plays. Jeff Hafley's group finally was able to generate the turnovers they've been desperately searching for.

Game Balls

Emmanuel Wilson

I know a lot of Packers fans were confused by the near-constant rushing in this game (more on that later), but let's just take a moment to appreciate what he was enabling.

In his very first start of his NFL career, Wilson looked unstoppable. He was the hammer that Matt LaFleur used to bludgeon the Vikings all game long. Wilson earned 107 yards on the ground, the first time a Packers running back has crossed the 100 yard mark all season. He added two touchdowns to his mark, but to me the most impressive aspect of his game was the way he absolutely refused to go down. Out of his 107 yards, 94 came after contact, meaning he gained roughly an additional three extra yards per rush on Sunday. He was also credited with six missed tackles forced, and had four rushes go for over ten yards. I know we are all looking forward to the return of MarShawn Lloyd, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to imagine giving any snaps away from Wilson (or Brooks in pass protection, for that matter).

Let's give an honorary game ball to the offensive line for their performance in this game as well. The unit looked much more settled in this game, and the surprise addition of Anthony Belton to the RG rotation seemed to work out nicely. I expect that to continue for the next couple games.

The Pass Rush

Speaking of bludgeoning...

The entire defense left a bloodbath on the field, but a the game ball goes to the pass rush. They created five total sacks, two QB hits, nine hurries, and sixteen pressures, which means McCarthy was put into an disadvantageous position on over half of his drop backs. Micah Parsons showed of his ability to create havoc even through the double and triple teams, but the rest of the team reminded the league that they can take advantage of the attention opposing offenses must give to Parsons.

  • Warren Brinson may have earned some extra snaps next week with his performance today. Besides his first NFL sack, Brinson tallied four pressures (each of which also turned into a hurry) which tied him in first place with Parsons in that stat.
  • Rashan Gary had a very good game, the highlight of which was definitely the QB hit that turned into an interception for Isiah McDuffie.
  • LVN was back in the game this week for the first time since week 6, but only logged six total snaps. He'll likely get an increased share against the Lions.

Overall, JJ McCarthy was held to 87 passing yards on the day, but lost 35 yards to sacks.

The Special teams (???)

Are we collectively hallucinating a good game from the special teams?

Brandon McManus went 3/3 on field goals, Romeo Doubs had a good sixteen yard return (though I wish he would learn to use both hands to hold the ball), and the punt cover team was able to actually recover a turnover. The MVP of the special teams, as he has been all year, was certainly punter Daniel Whelan, who had three punts land in the 20, including one booming 63 yarder.

Lame Calls

Run/Pass Ratio

There's a bit of a caveat to what seems like a weekly inclusion in the "Lame Calls" section of my game reviews. I've not held back on my frustration with the run/pass ratio this season for the Packers, who rank among the most run heavy offenses in the league. I want to be clear that I don't have a problem with a run heavy offense, at face value. When you look at the most run heavy teams in the league, you'll see that the Packers are keeping company with some of the most effective offense this year, such as the Lions, Seahawks, and Bills.

The problem comes from the fact that the passing offense has been so much better.

Just look at the gameplan for the Packers last week vs the Giants. Tons of runs, but they came from under center. That allowed the Packers to marry those concepts with under center play action, and attack the middle of the field. When you are abandoning the actual passing part of your attack, it becomes too one-dimensional. In their first fourth quarter possession, the Packers had seven runs in a row. It led to a McManus field goal and a 20-6 lead, but it just leaves everyone who is watching scratching their head and wondering "Why?".

My gut tells me this was probably the game to shield Jordan Love against any and all contact from the defense. We all saw that his shoulder was so banged up that he couldn't even use that hand to hand the ball off. Once the Packers scored 17, the game was out of reach for this Vikings offense.

The Run Defense

While it was mentioned on the broadcast, it really does seem like the book is out on how to beat this Packers defense. They can't stop the run.

The difference in this game was that the Packers were able to get to an early lead that could force their opponents to throw. Since JJ McCarthy is... not good, this strategy worked out perfectly. Whether or not that formula can hold against the elite of the NFC will remain to be seen. Jaymyr Gibbs is playing like one of the best running backs in the entire NFL right now, coming off a game with 250+ yards from scrimmage. The Packers will need to figure out a way to plug those holes, while still guarding against play action shots.

Three and Out

-- Today's Word of the Game: "Relentless". Whether it was the pass rush or the running game, the Vikings had no answers to the advantages that the Packers had in this game, and you have to be impressed with the way that the Packers just kept coming at them. That's the kind of game that the Packers can beat any team in the league with, provided the players are executing.

-- Keisean Nixon suffered a stinger early in the second quarter, forcing Kamaal Hadden into the game, where he played significant snaps. I'd guess that his status for Thursday's matchup with Detroit will be in serious doubt. The team will be looking to get some major reinforcements in other areas however, and we'll see if some players who were held out of this game can heal up in time. Those names include: Josh Jacobs, Quay Walker, Matthew Golden, Nate Hobbs, and (potentially) Jayden Reed.

-- The Packers' run of divisional opponents marches on with a Thanksgiving day contest in Detroit, in only four short days. According to The Athletic's playoff simulator, the Packers currently sit with a 77% chance of making the playoffs. A win against the Lions in Detroit on Thursday would raise those chances all the way up to 92%, and a loss would drop the chances to 69%.

Losing wouldn't be the end of the world, but losing to both the Lions and Bears would leave Green Bay with only a 40% chance. If the Packers can go 3-3 over the last six weeks of the season, it leaves them with a very good chance to make it to the dance, in basically any order of wins/losses. The road to the playoffs is clear, and boy it'd be nice to get those wins out of the way early in the remaining stretch.

Rashad Gary did not have a “very good game “ as you stated. He had a couple very good plays. The rest of the game he was invisible. The Packers media has set a low bar for him considering his top 15 salary.

Gary is 12th in the league in sacks (and #5 on that list plays across from him- there's only so many sacks to go around), and he's one of the leagues best run defending edge rushers.

Maybe your analysis isn't on point.

I don't know how it was officially ruled, but he had that sack fumble on the McDuffie interception. I think it will get ruled sack fumble, and fumble recovery for McDuffie.

When you watch Gary he is really good setting the edge and playing the run. He doesn't have a ton of splash plays. But he does a lot of dirty work really well.

Good analysis.....I've never liked how he high steps when he rushing which makes him average to above average rushing the passer, but where he excels is run defense. Now, is he worth the contract? Can LVN replace him and we use the salary cap elsewhere? We will find out next year.

Honestly I can see him being a cap casualty next year. Or maybe the restructure his contract. I don't know. But I could see them moving on. They have LVN which I think they like. I think they are liking Sorrell as well. We will see what happens for sure.

Bingo murf7777, RG comes out of stance to erect, high steps gives up leverage ( coaching ) ?
good speed, always hustles, chases plays down but was giving up the edge to frequently earlier games. Great team player but possible salary cap victim.. ( its a business ) GB could use some additional draft picks and cap space in 26.

I think people not only underestimate the kind of team mate Gary is, but too often fans entirely mischaracterize him as a "me first" player.

I could see Rashan taking a massive home-team discount contract to stay a Packer- and make no mistake about it, he'd get paid on the open market.

I love #55, but I don't want to see him with the green dot. Cooper! A big part of Quay's improvement is Cooper adjusting him verbally on the field. I can understand them not wanting to give it to Cooper at the beginning of this season, but that changes should be made now.

There was a defensive play in the 3rd quarter that put our D-line in perspective. Parsons was triple teamed including the RB in protection and all our remaining linemen faced single protection. Still all the pocket collapse came from Parson's side. Not enough talent in that trench.

This game reminded me of a HS scrimmage except it counts in the standing.
It seemed like the Pack was going to experiment running the ball w/o really using the pass to set it up. Kalani mentions it and I think it's correct...the coaches thought they could win with a conservative gameplay. They were correct.
Next week will be a different animal and I hope more playmakers will be healthier. LVN and Wyatt will help the defense and having Golden and Jacobs back on offense will help as well.
Last observation...Wilson has always shown he could be a good RB, he just needed to be a complete player and he proven that this year.

"it's correct...the coaches thought they could win with a conservative gameplay."

I think they went in hoping to win with that plan. Certainly the Vikings have been susceptible to the run this season--the Bears beat them with it last week--and the Packers like to emphasize that. After the opening possession, the Vikes never really pushed the Packers to have to adjust their plan and do much different.

"Next week will be a different animal and I hope more playmakers will be healthier. "

Absolutely: the Packers could've played LVN more, and it certainly seems that they gambled that they could rest Jacobs, Golden, and Walker--and try to break in Belton--and still win, while getting healthier on the short week. It worked out this time.

You're right, though. The Packers are unlikely to hold the Lions to under 10 at their place. The Giants were a trap game for the Lions and they almost got caught. The Giants never abandoned the run and Winston kept pushing the ball downfield for chunk plays...at one point, they had 10 receptions of over 20 yards. They also were after Goff all day and he took some hard hits and never really looked comfortable. If it's not for Gibbs and his chunk plays, the Lions get humbled. The Lions miss Sam LaPorta: he occupies the LB/S in a way that their other TEs and RBs don't.

The Lions will be ready on Thursday. The Packers better be the aggressor.

"My gut tells me this was probably the game to shield Jordan Love against any and all contact . . ."
If JL is in that much pain and you're not hiding the fact that you're going to run until they stop you and to milk clock, why on earth isn't Malik Willis running that offense?
Protect Love.
Run plays from under center to avoid errant snaps.
Play action and bootlegs to keep moving the chains.
Take advantage of the weapon that Willis is.
Offensive genius moniker does not fit the perfectly coiffed head of our hc IMO.
So rewarding to physically punish the purple plum eaters though!

100% agree, Willis is perfectly capable of handing the ball off, should've been playing the entire 4th quarter - might've actually gotten into the end zone a few times instead of Field Goals to give Jordan a rest. Instead of someone in there who is so banged up he is handing the football off with the wrong hand in a game well in control with a short week coming up- just sayin !

IDK if his play is worthy of a 'game ball' but Sean Rhyan did a decent job at center. Lots of crazy blitzes coming at them and he both blocked and called the blocking in mostly an above average way.

Also a little surprised McDuffie was not mentioned.

But good list overall. I would also add the shotgun handoff continues to be the stupidest play call in LaFleur's playbook. Burn that page man.

I know the shotgun handoff has been around all season, but I wonder with the banged up shoulder right now that the under center might be too much force against Love and it hurts for that kind of snap? Just thinking/wondering out loud.

Rhyan's got to greatly improve his snapping in a hurry if he's expected to hold down that job the rest of year.

There's been 3-4 high or otherwise off-target snaps both games- Love's been able to reel them in, but it's just a matter of time one of those balls finds turf and we're scrambling to maintain possession.

It is always the risk when you are training guys to play a new position. But then again it is the Packer way to remap offensive linemen. We like to roll the dice. I hope he works out because you have to go back to Linsley for a decent center and that just isn't right.

I thought Rhyan has played well overall at C. I think he has played better at C then he has at OG honestly. I like him in there for the run game also. He just brings some extra bulk.

The shotgun handoff in this game I think was more based on Loves injured shoulder then anything.

Game Balls:

Wilson -
He really did play well. He got his first start had over 100 yards rushing and 2 TD's. Hell of a good game for him!

Anderson -
His special teams play changed the game. At that point it was 10-6, and the Packers did nothing offensively on that first drive of the half. Anderson pushing the guy into the ball causing the turnover changed everything.

Defense -
They held the Vikings to 6 points. One was a 59 yard FG. They really didn't give up much of anything. And they were getting after McCarthy. Parsons, Wyatt, Gary all performed really well.

Lame Calls:

OL shuffle -
While most of us thought Belton would be a great fit at RG, it took until this game for the coaches to put him there. Also, it is clear that Morgan is not a RG. He is clearly a LT only. Maybe a LG, but he is a left side guy. I don't get why it has taken so long for them to get Belton in at RG. He looked like a natural there and I really hope they give him more opportunities there.

Everyone complaining about the Run/Pass ratio in this game (I know I'm going to take heat for this one.) -
Like it or not but this was just a smart decision by LaFleur. Once they got to 17 points LaFleur knew they had the win. I was taught when I was young that there is a difference between needing something and wanting something. There are things you truly need, and they come before the things that you want. And with the things you want, you should really think about it to make sure they are things you really want.
The Packers did not need to put up 40 points in this game. Fans wanted that, but its not what GB needed. What they needed was to get the win while not putting their clearly injured QB at further risk. Love having to hand the ball of 'backwards', showed that he wasn't fully healthy. He was clearly uncomfortable in this game. To risk more hits on him is not worth it. They have a short week and getting through this game the fastest way possible is a huge help for this upcoming game.

Three and out:

Nixon -
This is an injury to monitor. From what I have heard it sounded like Hadden played well. But it will be interesting to see what happens on a short week. LaFleur had some high praise for Hadden after the game.

Injured Players -
This game we were without Jacobs, Reed, Golden, Walker. Those are some pretty serious injuries to not have on the field. And that doesn't include Kraft. Also Love was not playing healthy, LVN returning and Carl Brooks didn't play a lot. We will see how this impacts the Lions game on thursday, But maybe we can get back a few of those players.

Lions -
While GB had an easy victory over a division rival, and the game got done about 15-20 minutes earlier then normal, the Lions game was almost polar opposite. They went into OT, and I don't know exactly, but real time they were about 45 minutes behind the packers game. In a short week that could make a bigger impact on the upcoming week.

The one thing I thought was that they held Jacobs out so he could play Thursday. Reed coming back seems like he could potentially play Thursday as well.

A few of the players, that I thought they didn't give a ton of snaps to just to keep healthy to play Thursday was LVN and Brooks. But seeing stuff about LVN, maybe he got hurt? I don't know.

"They held the Vikings to 6 points. One was a 59 yard FG. They really didn't give up much of anything. "

The Vikings moved the ball downfield pretty effectively on their first drive and stalled out, settling for a FG. After that, they were ineffective. For those who think the Packers' offense is meh, we saw an offense that's really scuffling yesterday, and they weren't wearing green and gold.

On the radio broadcast, they noted that McCarthy's QB rating in the first two drives of games (scripted plays) this season was well over 100. After that, he's down around 60. Tells you a lot.

"I don't get why it has taken so long for them to get Belton in at RG."

I think it's the 'backlash' of training him as a T-only in camp. Getting him enough practice reps at G so it wasn't too much of a leap to throw him in there might have been challenging.

"Nixon"

If Nixon is a no-go on Thursday, I expect the Lions to go after the slow Hadden (4.6) downfield with their faster WR. For some reason, the Vikings never went after him. I think the Packers play a lot of zone on Thursday to try to protect Hadden, but they're going to need to make Goff uncomfortable all day to win.

I expect the Lions to come out hot. We'll see how it goes.

"The Vikings moved the ball downfield pretty effectively on their first drive and stalled out, settling for a FG"
And on that first drive if Bullard is looking back he potentially has a pick 6. At the very least should have had an interception.

"Getting him enough practice reps at G so it wasn't too much of a leap to throw him in there might have been challenging."
I do think you are right. I am sure it probably took him a while to get comfortable at G. I honestly am hoping they keep him there now.
As for Morgan, I wouldn't mind seeing him getting a chance at LT. That is his position. And I wouldn't be disappointed if they gave him a drive at LT sometime.

"I think the Packers play a lot of zone on Thursday to try to protect Hadden, but they're going to need to make Goff uncomfortable all day to win"
I agree about Hadden. It will be interesting to see what happens.
But your last point is exactly how you beat the Lions. You have to get pressure on Goff. When you get pressure on him he is not good. So they have to stop the run and get pressure on Goff.

Before you worry about Hadden (which is reasonable), worry about the run game. In our first meeting they failed to focus on that in first half concertedly and it was out of the equation as they played catch up for the most part. Don’t for a minute think that will be the case this time.

At the moment it’s their best ploy irrespective of opponent given Goff can be got to this year. The Giants had him all kinds of flustered. Hafley can’t wait till we have a 10 point lead to unleash the rush as he did last week, but our run D is going to have to be vastly better than it was this week too to make the rush a factor.

LaPorta is out for the season and the effect on Goff of losing his safety valve shouldn’t be overlooked. We can do this, but it’s going to require getting out ahead to do so most likely, however well we run the ball ourselves.

Yeah i agree about Hadden and the run game. It starts with that in stopping the Lions offense. But to me the key is we have to get to Goff early and often. When Goff gets flustered he is just bad. With opponents trying to go with the run game against us i am expecting a heavy dose of both Gibbs and Montgomery.
But don't forget that Gibbs is coming off a 26 touch game. That is a lot of use in a game 4 days before.

We really need to have our run game going. The more successful our run game is the better our passing game will be.

The boys came out and took care of business. Vikings QB made the task easier but all three phases showed better overall play. Glad to see Stackhouse and Brinson get some meaningful reps. Really need to see the interior D-line shore up against the run. Parsons is simply amazing.

I know people are churning on the heavy run play calling, my self included, but it is showing signs of paying off. I wonder if Lafleur is using game time to build the skills needed to be a game controlling offense. If the O-line changes pan out the two headed monster could be born. I like what they did with the personnel on the line yesterday.

Big shout out to Wilson and McDuffie for stepping up. True pros who have worked hard on their craft

I really like that they got Belton in there at RG. I think that was a really smart move. I am not sure if part of the thought to go run heavy was to get the OL going, BUT, I think its a move that could pay off in the long run. Belton playing for the first time at RG, and getting him a ton of run reps is a smart move I think.

Totally agree. Just getting a young guy used to NFL speed is beneficial. From confidence to comprehension, Belton should take a step forward. I wish we would see what we have in guard Jennings and center Monk. Both take up roster spots and neither plays. In the past we have held onto linemen that didn't provide depth or pro potential. Don't be afraid to turn over the bottom of the roster.

The author said it and I agree - the ultra conservative play calling was to protect Love's injured shoulder from contact and additional injury. LaFleur leaned on the running game and the defense for this win and that was a smart plan. I am not sure if LaFleur can do the same plan against a much better Detroit team and get a win. He will likely have to expose Love to more danger on Thursday to win.

And I'm sure Dan Campbell and his crew know about Love's injury too and will attack it with everything they have. If the Packers can get through Thursday with a win they have a mini-bye afterward which will give Love more time to get healed. Crucial game coming up!!!

Forgot to add this groaner from yesterday's games. After the Packers I switched to the Lions game. The Giants gifted that win with some boneheaded calls. Second and goal at the end of the 4th quarter and rather that pound the rock they gambled their remaining 3 downs on pass plays and handed that ball over to the Lions who only needed a field goal to tie.

Coaches didn't trust their D to finish out the game. A field goal would have forced the Lions to put up 7. Having a good defense makes all the difference - having good coaching let's you take advantage of that difference.

Amazing to me how many coaches have forgotten the old maxim of "always take the points". I guess analytics sometimes points the other way, but the Giants had that game won if they just kick the short field goal.

The Giants might have won if they had taken the points, though the potent Lions offense would still have had the ball. I do think analytics can sometimes get in the way of smart coaching. Using analytics is smart, but many other factors should be considered when making the right call, such as the weather and how each team is performing on offense and defense.

I also believe Campbell’s ego, or perhaps arrogance, can affect his decision-making with his go-for-it-all-the-time approach. While analytics often support his choices, they aren’t always the right ones.

Kafka has made some boneheaded decisions in his two games running the Giants. I think he's trying too hard to win a job, but his choosing Winston over the noodle-armed Wilson seems to be a good one. I agree that the pass calls at the goal line were ill-advised, and they needed to burn clock, but I can understand wanting to take the game in your own hands and put it out of reach. If it works, you look like a gunslinger. In this case it didn't, and you look like someone who took unnecessary risks that cost you the game--and maybe a shot at being a HC.

"Coaches didn't trust their D to finish out the game."

I don't get this part of it, either. With the exception of Gibbs and his chunk plays, the Giants were doing a good job frustrating Goff. I think the Lions were out of TOs, so forcing them into a situation where they couldn't run put the Giants' strength against Goff. We'll never know.

Kafka has had 2 awesome game plans to be fair. I think he wanted to try and make a big statement to ripple through the team and fan base. I get it at a certain level, but he really needed to realize that the statement made by the win would have been big enough. I wonder if he personally needed the confidence boost validation too much. Either way I was telling him noooooo via my TV, as we’re the others with me, in unison.

Maybe ownership has instructions to play for a higher draft pick. Who knows. Defense is playing well and you have clock and timeouts in your favour. Wonder how the players feel about that effort being unnecessarily gambled away.

Love was in pain with his left shoulder which is why he was handing off with his right hand. Greg Olsen commented on it and Andy Herman asked Love about it post-game.The game was already won and it was a great time to showcase what Wilson could do.
MLF was trying to bleed the clock, let his D rest and protect his QB. I am 100% with MLF on his decision this game.
This Thursday will have plenty of thrills and chills.

Happy for Wilson. Haddon stepped up as well. Andy H was right about Parsons-we are witnessing greatness. Rodgers recognized it after their game in Dallas, 2022, (P's 2nd season) and made certain to find him after their game and swap jerseys/praise.

With that game plan from the outset either Love should not have been out there to start, and certainly by half time or you are simply concocting excuses to defend LaFleur. If you are wrong he was dreadful, if you are right he made an equally indefensible decision to risk Love given his now admitted game plan and Willis’s competence as a QB and mobility as well.

@CW-I have no interest in defending MLF. I have been very critical of his lack of preparedness for less 'crucial' games. I think he managed this game smartly, though.

Why introduce Willis, who was a bit reckless with the ball last week (Watson miraculously caught it).
Look at the big picture-Willis is not the player a coach wants to rely on in upcoming difficult games. MLF needs to protect Love as much as possible especially in a game that was already won.
Shoulder injury pain can often be managed by bracing, supportive dressings and strategic regional nerve blocking. Lidocaine and other local anesthetics can often block pain while retaining use. They didn't have time to treat him during the game but they will prior to the Lion's game.

MLF has been in touch with the MD staff and he is acutely aware of what is going on with Love and the team's needs.

Football is such a game of chess that sometimes, just keeping it simple literally solves everything.

I, personally dont think we have leaders who are good with decision making so I will be content with my excitement.

But oh my, what a delightful situation that we had to lose our starting C in Jenkins in order to find our best OLine.

OLine was sooooooooooooo bad, but packers kept trying the same thing that wasnt working.
I am tired of trying to force play a high draft pick or a veteran over the better player. I will keep saying this! Idk why the coaches does this so often year in year out.

I Saw a clip weeks ago of BELTON NO LOOK Block with one hand where he literally ragdoll the Dlineman while playing RT... The first thing I SCREAM was, Why wasnt this guy playing GUARD? ( He plays Guard yesterday and we have our best Rushing day of the season)

Now, Im not saying I know more than these coaches but you would think these pro coaches wouldve thought of that with how bad the o line was.

Is it time to give Sean Rhyan some kudos for the work he is doing at center? Enough of the "he's a bit better than Jenkins" semi-insult. The Packers made a mistake, and Rhyan is showing he is capable of handling the duties just fine. Whether the team keeps Jenkins now depends on salary cap considerations and recent injuries.
Another thing I noticed was that the TE's are no longer running free in the secondary. Whether this is players who are better, or Hafley being more aware of this problem, Hockenson was not a factor in the game. Yes, he had some catches, but never for any kind of YAC and was on the ground within seconds of catching the ball.
And, absolutely, unless Love is nursing a more serious injury than reported, time to adjust that run/pass ratio.

The game went pretty much how it would be ideally scripted. Get a lead, take the air out of the ball, and harass the hell out of McCarthy. Not sure if he is going to pan out as an NFL starter, but for the Packers' sake, I hope he remains their starter.

Big kudo's to Wilson. He ran aggressively and took the fight to the Vikings front 7.

Watched the end of the Giants/Lions game. Very poor end of game strategy by NY. That has to be a total letdown for a team that had the Lions in a tough position.

Update: Giants fired their defensive coordinator after the Lions' loss. That is Kafka in CYA mode after his own poor playing calling at the end of the 4th quarter.

"Update: Giants fired their defensive coordinator after the Lions' loss."

I've been reading that it was a matter of time for their DC, and that the front office didn't want to saddle Kafka with the transition to HC AND having to oversee a new DC all in the same two weeks. But I agree: I've seen Kafka's two games and while the haven't looked bad, Kafka might be coaching his way out of HC consideration.

A lot of Giants fans thought their DC was their biggest issue outside of critical injuries not Daboll. In their mind he was not using players to their strengths, in the right roles or reading games right situationally. Players and overall play are seen as having regressed. It actually sounds a lot like Barry to listen to. Since Kafka was hired a gutted O has kept them in games they were not expect to be able to, while their D has not.

Good review, Kalani...kind of how I saw it from the stands too.

I would reward a game ball to Wyatt...not only for his 2 sacks but that guy we was vs the Giants was reincarnated Sunday. What a synergies show up when Wyatt is disruptive and keeps playing to whistle!

Last week he just stopped on plays. Not yesterday. He played to to the whistle, freeing up others as he fought to the QB...getting a couple of sacks on the way.

He should also be called out for standing so close to the sideline w/o paying attention to the live action.
It was his last second protective reaction that put his elbow and forearm into KNixon's neck shoulder area that caused the stinger.
If he's paying attention, he puts up more of a protective pillow to catch him.
I wonder if it were an opposing player if the elbow would have been flagged for unnecessary roughness?

Nothing has changed from my perspective in terms of my opinion or the validity of the bases for it. LaFleur will get us as far as a roster will drag him. Yesterday did nothing to counter that. Neither the Giants nor Minnesota were going to move the needle much anyway. The next two games very likely will.

No need to keep up the drumbeat, your POV has been adequately represented. You're getting close to painting yourself in a corner. Results will determine LaFleur's future with the club. The defense is championship caliber, it's going to come down to whether MLF can get the necessary performances from the offense.

The Rams offense is shiny and sparkly and quite innovative. Maybe Matt should revisit the LA playbook.

It’s the calling and playbook in significant part. Yesterday in particular. Entirely no, as the previous week showed. However, execution is in part a reflection of both coaching and how well the calls put the players in good positions to execute according to both the opponent and their abilities.

The choices from the playbook are the more salient point to me. I realize you can go through most team's playcalling and second guess your way to an undefeated season, but I think it's low hanging fruit for this team. 30-yard passes when you need a first down on 3rd and 3, ponderous tempo, refusal to acknowledge what's working. There is a theme.

All of it leads back to whether he is building the brand or backpedaling.

I think the GM has given him all the pieces for a deep run. If they're healthy and don't make it, that lands on him.

As far as the math goes, the Giants made the correct call. You score the TD and the game is over, you fail and you leave Detroit pinned in their own end. Sometimes you have to trust your defense (and your offense) to make plays.

Field position drives the decision. You kick the field goal and you give Detroit the ball back at their 30 or so after the kick-off. There was nothing nefarious about the call. It was math.

I felt the coaching staff was attempting to sneak a win in the most conservative method possible; running and protecting Love. I think maybe like the Lions m, they were peaking around the corner to Lions game. It worked—now get the Lions!
Game ball: Whelan; Wilson.
Lame: A run play on 3rd & 3 inside the 30 yrd line.

The "experts" on TV who commented on the Packers acquisition of Micha Parson were spot on this time. The Packers did indeed get a game changer when they landed him from the Cowboys. When I watched him play against the Vikings yesterday with Minnesota at times dedicating three offensive players to block Parsons it essentially gives the rest of the Packers defensive linemen one on one opportunities. The value of that to a team is truly game changing in itself. I do believe his value goes beyond his individual play and that he inspires his teammates to play better and elevates the Packers defense beyond his individual efforts. Truly a valuable acquisition.

So the ultra conservative play calling was due to LaFleur trying to protect Love from further injury ?! Would it not have been smarter to pull a physically compromised Love - for a healthy, mobile and capable Willis (who had the use of two hands) ? It's not like Willis is incapable of playing in these games. Also Love basically just handed-off to the RBs in the 4th quarter - which I'm certain that Willis could have also handled. Plus Willis could have opened the playbook - which may have been more pleasing to the players and fans alike.

The Offense totaled 66 snaps - of which Willis played just 6 in closing time. He could have certainly played more while completely protecting Love from any further injury. Once again -when I'm thinking about LaFleur - I am reminded that "genius is limited but stupidity is not."

He could have done the same with Willis handling the ball. If you want to run the ball and clock - you don't need Love to do it.

Also Love has had some real tight throws and catches in the last couple of weeks - which could have gone either way. Sometimes luck is on the QB's side.

You would think that MLF would try not to play into the opposition's hand by "allowing" the other team to run the ball. Going up in the game quickly (by letting Love cook) would restrict the run, maybe better than Packer's D can prevent them from running. Running and taking the "air" out of the ball is not advisable when your team is down 3 scores.

I can't help but feel that Doubbs should be a soccer player instead of a football .
Too often avoids contact like the plague , seldom fights for YAK, runs out of bounds to avoid contact.
Very lame returning kicks.
He kind of wears the bubble head well .
He makes good catches in the end zone when we used to throw in the end zone.
Since we don't anymore, I wish the Packers would look for another receiver that compliments Watson better. Golden is too small for the NFL.
