I harassed Jersey Al about it a few days ago. I didn't help him, or figure out a source better than waiting for football outsiders to post the numbers, though.

I was just kidding around. I looked last night at the site, but too early. Went out early this morning to a dead car so my morning was all messed up.

Have you guys considered using chalk behind the couch to chart snap counts? That technique produced some solid data regarding A.J. Hawk; reported right here on CHTV last week! I can't remember the name of the poster, but he reportedly received permission from his wife before undertaking his research. A wise move anytime chalk is involved, I'd say.

What's happened to M. Adams? I thought he was supposed to be Daniel's replacement and he only saw 24% of the snaps on the D-line. We are going to wear out Kenny Clark at this rate. If Gute finds any help before the trade deadline it needs to be a quality D-lineman.

Lancaster took his snaps when he was injured and hasn't given a lot of them back. I think we're seeing a lot of #55 dictating what their DL packages look like in passing situations, too.

I've been a little surprised they haven't played Gary inside rather than Z. Smith although Gary is still learning to pass rush. The larger problem is we just don't get much pass rush from any of our D-linemen at this stage. At least Daniels would occasionally pressure the QB from inside. We need a defensive tackle who can collapse the pocket from the inside.

Seriously dude??? Gary inside???
Gary doesn't have the body type or the skill set to play ILB. He would be a HUGE liability in pass coverage. He's better off as a hybrid OLB/DE as he has been playing.

I believe he meant as an inside rusher on the DL, not as a linebacker.

Thanks Jersey Al and you are correct. I meant substituting Gary for Z. Smith as an inside rusher on the D-line. Gary is not agile enough to be effective as an ILB, particularly in coverage.

Fackrell had 33 snaps to Gary's 14. I thought Fackrell had a nice game and was disruptive a several times.

I agree TGR, Fackrell had a good game. I am surprised that he has been outperforming Gary and Tim Williams both of whom had much better college pedigrees. Gary is transitioning to a new position so I understand his development more, but I thought Willams would supplant Fackrell. Kudos to Fackrell for stepping up.

Been screaming this all year. I did some base this game, but yeah, i feel they have been leaving him out getting doubled and in some cases tripled. They could use one more big body.

I need to know if Oren Burks is ready or not. Blake Martinez has been a disappointment. I know he played with the club and leads the NFL in tackles, but let's face it, he is not good. He's ok. Most tackles 5 yards downfield, often looks lost, can't thump or cover TEs. Time to invest a high pick in an MLB.

Burks has been playing, this week it appears just on special teams per Al's snap counts above.

"Most tackles 5 yards downfield"

I just don't get this argument. If Blake doesn't tackle them 5 yards downfield then where will they get tackled? 7, 10, 15 yards downfield?

He's an Inside Linebacker. 5 yards downfield is where he plays.

Exactly right!!!

These people have never laced a pair of cleats, let alone know what they're talking about. Just because Martinez isn't showing up on the highlight reel, doesn't mean he sucks.

He's the best tackler on D... in fact, in the entire NFL. Why are we bitching about it?

To blame Martinez is the equivalent of blaming CMIII for the fact that the Packers never drafted any help for him on the other side, and the last middle 'thumper' we had was Bishop a long time ago.
At another position, can you remember Gilbert Brown, or maybe B.J. Raji?
Raji replaced Gilbert to some degree, but since then it's been just 'Hopefuls' and a poor run defense

I think all of us would like to see more splash plays from Blake. But to say he is not good, I think is not fair. A.J. Hawk was a disappointment, seemed lost and often the 3rd guy to the ball. When a 4th round pick leads the league in tackles, rarely comes off the field and fills the role your team gives you, I believe he is very valuable to this team. I would love an all-pro inside linebacker who can thump and cover. That is a rare combo with today's speed. I agree, we need to spend a high pick, but that is no guarantee, we tried with A.J. and Nick Barnett in the first round, Nick had one pro bowl. A proven veteran, who can compliment Blake, who is hungry for a Super Bowl would be a good move.

Oren Burks was likley a game plan decision. Note that Goodson only played 3 snaps as well. They went with one ILB (Martinez) and heavy on the DBs, hoping to control the Chiefs' dangerous receiving weapons. Judging from the snaps, I'd say they were in Dime most of the game with some Nickel thrown in.

Justis Mosqueda put up a chart with tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage & Martinez is tied for 23rd. https://twitter.com/JuMosq/status/1187463337161834499

To be fair to Blake, he's tied with Luke Kuechly and Bobby Wagner on that list. We do really need a sideline to sideline ILB that can cover, but I don't think the ILB tree has any of those left this season, and Martinez is at least serviceable.

I thought about doing this as an article, but I'd like to get it out there. Against KC, this is my breakdown of 59 defensive snaps by position group:

1.95 DL (115 snaps) on the field on average;
1.05 ILB (62 snaps);
2.34 OLB (138 snaps - probably Z and Gary played some DL, too.)
2.17 Safeties (128 snaps, but note Redmond is listed as an SS, some might be hybrid
3.49 CBs (206 snaps - Jaire, King, Twill, Sullivan). Hodkiewicz tweeted Sully played some deep safety.

Context: Here are the season averages for Denver and Chicago (two good 3-4 teams), respectively through 7 games:

CHI // DEN //// GB
2.40 / 2.39 DL [2.196 for GB]
1.77 / 1.89 ILBs [1.36 for GB]
2.06 / 2.02 OLBs [2.34 for GB]
2.42 / 2.04 safeties (Chicago usually trotted out Jackson and HHCD; Denver 4 diff guys)
2.35 / 2.65 CBs (I don't know if there were subpackages and used as safeties, ILBs, etc.)

Green Bay through 8 weeks:
2.196 DL
1.360 ILBs (Counts Greene's snaps as ILB, all of Redmond's too until Savage was hurt.)
2.340 OLB (Some of Z and Gary's snaps probably were actually on the DL.)
1.980 Safeties (probably some of Twills, Sullivan's, Jackson's snaps were as safeties)
2.870 CBs (see above - Amos may have played some slot CB).

Don't mean to confuse. Other than Greene until he got hurt, and Redmond until Savage got hurt, I counted all players as they are nominally known/listed even if I know they played both safety and CB, or both OLB and DL.

Biggest difference is in pure beef. GB is 2.19 and Chi and Denver are about 2.4. Doesn't sound like much but .2 of 529 snaps is 111 more snaps by a real DL for Chicago and Denver, about 14 per game. Maybe Z and Gary played an average of 14 snaps per game on the DL? Even if they did, they aren't 300 pounders. Think run defense. ILB is low. CB is very high, even if some CBs might really have played safety and hybrid ILB.

WHERE'S THE BEEF?

Pettine knows he doesn't have a strong group of D-linemen which is why they get used less. The defense is deep at OLB and DB and Pettine uses that well. The D is light on D-linemen and ILBs which is why you see fewer snaps for them. Folks calling for a trade for an ILB or D-lineman are just reflecting what your numbers show - we need more talent at both positions.

Obviously Gary, our first round draft pick at the 12 spot, isn't impressing anyone since he hardly sees the field.
We could certainly have done better with that pick.

Unbelievable that Gute would take a guy who was considered the biggest bust possibility in the first round at #12. There's risk and there's risk. Nothing Gary showed in college justified his being picked there other than that he could run fast for a big guy. Big deal. He's not a great football player, he's a guy who runs fast for a big guy. That's all. Now everyone is taking the stance that it will all be clear to us in three years. That's not what you want with the #12 pick. Sure Gute knows he screwed up royally.
