Cory's Corner: This Team Is 'We' Not 'Me'

Don't be worried about losing a No. 1 wideout — the Packers have many ways to win.

It’s easy to complain about.

The Packers wideouts have been low hanging fruit since Davante Adams was traded away. But…the Packers will be OK without their No. 1 wideout on Sunday.

Yes, I get it. “Cory, you don’t understand, the Packers don’t have a shot without their top wide receiver.”

That makes sense, but if any team is going to make noise without a top wideout, it’s going to be the Packers. This team is just so deep everywhere.

Arguably one of the best collections of talent in the NFL lies in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Yes, that does seem a little heavy handed, but it’s true. The Packers have been very good at assembling a roster. From the quantity and quality on defense to the dynamic playmaking ability on offense.

The Packers have one of the best running back tandems in the league and according to Pro Football Focus, their offensive line is ranked No. 8.

Jordan Love is also making history on Sunday. He will become the third Packers quarterback to start a season opener since 1993. Coincidentally, that’s the last time the Lions were picked to win the division and Detroit is also picked to win it this year.

The Packers won’t have Christian Watson on Sunday. The speedy 6-foot-5 200-pound wideout has been the perfect addition. He can play on the boundary, he is physical at the point of attack and he is solid on the ground. There is nothing this team loves more than versatility — OK, maybe I should take that back. The Titletown District revenue has ranked pretty high.

But even without a supposed No. 1 wideout, the Packers have a great chance to win on Sunday afternoon. And the reason is simply because the Packers know how to make a complete team. This team has Zach Tom, who has been a human dynamo on the offensive line by doing everything that has been asked of him. He would probably play just about anywhere just to help out the team and that’s a microcosm of who the Packers really want.

Many didn’t think Rashan Gary would be playing in Week 1 and now, because he is a driven guy and he loves this team, he is on the verge of making a serious impact. There are so many guys that have put this team and its goals above their own and that’s why this team will succeed.

You can fret about Love if you must, but there are so many guys rowing in the same direction. I don’t get a “me” from this team but I get a heaping helping of “we.”

And that’s why this team will win this year. They may not have a lot of individual stars, but they will have a team that understands each other. And that’s also why this team will pass the first test of adversity on Sunday.

Not having Watson on Sunday isn’t ideal, but it’s also a proving ground. Can the Packers win with Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed and Luke Musgrave? I think they can as long as they lean heavily on the running game.

The personal stats may not be there, but this team has plenty of ways to win.

And that’s ultimately the recipe for success.

The question I’m interested in is “ Can Toure or Melton (or Wicks maybe?) successfully be hit deep, to provide the lost threat of Watson?

It’s just a shame that Love’s debut may be shadowed by injury.

PEO, I think the Packers have the depth to overcome the loss of Watson to injury. Plus, they have the personnel to roll CHI via the run, which will open up all of the passing concepts.

I agree on our need to attack deep in the passing game, but I'm fully confident we'll be able to with all the depth they've assembled. Reed & Melton are burners. Wicks has uncanny deep speed. Doubs should have a big day. Heath will get in the mix, and could be a nice surprise.

Then there's Musgrave & Kraft.

We're stacked with talent to step in and win.

The young talent you mentioned just needs experience as well as good coaching. If you look at the Lions' play Thursday evening as well as last year, they are playing all out for their coaching staff. They were all-in the entire game. If we can play like that, watch out!

The deep pass need not be attempted whether #9 is on the field or not. And #11's speed is almost identical, so he can be used in the same role to stretch the defense. Bo Melton's .03 faster than Reed on the 40 yard dash, still functionally identical.

High probability plays make sense, at least until this offense gels. Then sprinkle in the deep ball when somebody's actually open, instead of trying to thread needles into a target who's covered.

I'd rather see Doubs sit than risk further injury if he's not ready to go. The depth is real ...

There's an old axiom 'if they don't score they can't beat you'. While that is difficult in modern NFL ball the core of it holds true.

Victory over the Bears will depend if the defense can contain an improved Bears offense. The Packers will score but the Bears could be a challenge if they find the end zone each quarter.

We've waited nine months for this, so lets go!

It’s gonna be all about game planning. Thankfully MLF has known about Watson’s injury long enough to make adjustments. Now the “We” has to play smart, be where they’re suppose to be and move the chains!!

Great stuff, Cory. Thank you for this.

"The Packers have been very good at assembling a roster."

We are about to find out, aren't we? LOL. I have been a draft geek my entire life, and I find the work Gutekunst has done with limited cap funds these last two years to have been pretty solid, on paper. There's a lot of promising additions ready to take the field on Sunday, and I tend to agree with your sentiment.

Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon and Emanuel Wilson. I've been hoping beyond hope the AJs finally get their chance to work up a real lather, like we've never seen in GB. Let's face it, a gigantic, mauling rushing attack will go a very long way towards the Packers winning this game on Sunday. Our OL is one of the best in the NFL, and Sunday would be a great time to flex some run block mauling in heavy doses.

With Watson out for Week 1, I think we've got plenty of air weapons to employ, both at WR and TE, even though most are young and have yet to get their feet wet in an NFL game. Really hoping Bo Melton gets the call up for Sunday to show his wares as a reliable target and his blazing speed. He's got a fantastic "QB's Best Friend" quality to him. All the passing stuff will be there for the taking in play action, jets, gos, etc. with a steady rushing attack opening all of it up.

Doubs, Toure, Reed, Wicks & Heath could all factor in big time here as well. Musgrave should get some play, maybe a lot, and I suspect Kraft might surprise.

Glad that Gutekunst brought in all the run stop and pass rush that he did. This should prove a great test facing an unpredictable CHI offense with Justin Fields. The Bears will want desperately to win this one, and our Packers team should be up for the challenge. Especially LaFleur, Barry & Bisaccia, and the rest of this staff.

HUGE game for this young Packers team, and I like the talent and competitiveness they've shown through TC/pre-season. We're close. Game day mañana. Like all of you, I'm hoping for the best, and I believe we are built to come out of Sunday's game with the W.

Bring it, Packers.

Your unbounded optimism is appreciated GG, I just hope reality cooperates on Sunday.

I suspect the Bear's DC will load the box early and often and force Love and the kiddie corps receiver group to prove themselves. That would be a challenge with Watson, harder without him. I don't doubt the talent in the receiving group, but I am worried about the lack of experience. Incorrect route running can lead to interceptions and shatter confidence. I think Sunday will be a challenge for the offense.

Which brings me to the defense - I like the players, but not the coach. The defense will have to carry this team early as the offense learns to play. Given the talent on the defense that shouldn't be a problem unless Barry reverts to his Charmin soft coverage habits which will bring us another "average" defense despite the talent.

Fingers crossed I hope the parts come together for a victory over da bears on Sunday!

GPG!

The Packers have a decided advantage on both lines...which I absolutely enjoy. Football in its purest form is blocking and tackling with the big men setting the tone for what happens next on a play.

Love should have much more time to complete his reads...and this season it includes attacks on the entire field, including the middle...not just pelting passes to the perimeter.

Agreed the Packers have a much better O-line and that will help Love. D-line I am less sure of - Clark and lots of inexperience. That is one of the groups I am most interested in watching on Sunday.

I include the Edge as D line because they are on it and first to attack.

It has been awhile since I felt so confident with the Packers DTs, DEs and Edge group. It is tempered by the fact Barry is coaching them. However Montgomery and Rebrovich see to be very capable coaches. These are likely the best players either assistant has coached.

That article means nothing to our edge rushing group, or our pass rush as a whole. How many of those teams do we even play? Only the Steelers and the Chargers, right? And if our O line can't handle them, that will contribute to back to back losses.

It looks like we have better pass rush and run stop than we've had in many years, even though Zadarius Smith is still getting props in an article like that.

This ranking only talks about the starters, not the depth of the unit. Enagbare, Hollins and Van Ness make an outstanding depth group behind Gary and Smith and my comment was based on the whole group, not just the starters.

The Packers defensive line is a complete question mark. Other than Kenny Clark, who underplayed his contract last season. I just can’t see how that can be proclaimed the strength until we see actual games. There’s very little experience there, and nothing much to go on in terms of confidence.

I'm still very excited about our receivers even without Watson. For this game I really believe it's all about Jones and Dillon and Love running the ball. I think Love pulls it down multiple times and piles up 50 yards or so and 3 or 4 1st downs. He's going to out Fields, Fields! Look for a 200 yard running game in total. Passing, he'll spread the ball around to his wide receivers and get a few 'wow' plays from Reed and Musgrave. I see a Packers win 24-13. GPG!

Drink much KOOL Aid ! Although I am more excited this year than in recent memory due to the exit of a lot of drama surrounding the team and many young players, I would deem way, way too many, getting a shot at proving themselves, I think the article sounds a like a Gute / Murphy Propaganda Film. C'mon, the most talented roster in football, with an unproven QB, receivers, tight ends and assorted complimentary pieces including the entire kicking game, which can make or break a season in itself, you can't be taken seriously after making that statement. A perennial massive question mark called Bahktiari on the O'Line and perhaps one of your best defensive players on a pitch count already. I tend to try to live in reality and the jury is out on so many aspects of this time they should've changed the logos on the helmets to question marks. The only proven facet of the Packers team is the running game which is a Dynamic Duo much like the Brockington / Lane tandem. The jury is way, way out that Jordan Love however is not Scott Hunter. Let's not get far out in front of our skis here and as far as roster building, seriously. 1 trophy in 13 years with one of the greatest QB's of All Time and not surrounding him with enough talent unlike Mahomes and Brady. Those executives are roster builders. As Lombardi stated - the yardstick in this business is winning, we always admire Champions and the Mr. Lombardi's Trophy hasn't been raised by anyone in the Green and Gold in well over a decade. Like everyone says, there are no trophies for participating in the Playoffs as King of a very, very weak division. Go Get Em' Pack !!

The Packers provided Rodgers with more than enough talent to win numerous Super Bowls. Just watch the tape from all of the playoff loses. Rodgers squandered so many chances. He chokes under pressure and is not a good leader. It’s crystal clear. While I agree the author of this article is painting a very rosy picture, there is no question the Packers went to great lengths to provide Rodgers with more than sufficient talent to win multiple championships.

During Rodgers last few years in Green Bay, he was dealing with Davante Adams and pretty much nobody else with any talent, even matching that of a number 2 wide receiver. An undrafted tight end, who was a one year wonder, it was really the only talent at tight end. They waited until Rodgers left, or was on the way out to start drafting talent to replace all the receiving talent they lost. Rogers was dealing with one trick ponies like Marquez Valdes Scantling, and Jeff Janis. Yes, they had a great offensive line and some good running backs, but they really had not much else at the skill positions, other than number 17.

Why else did they need to spend three of their first four draft picks this spring on players who catch the ball? And last year they finally use some draft capital, leaving Rogers with rookies and over the hill guys. Expecting Lazard to be the number one was a ridiculous waste of a season.

Cory writes articles like that. It generates discussion and gets people riled up.

Obviously it's true that much of our talent on this roster has either not played an NFL snap, or is untested in the few they have. Hopefully we'll find that Chicago isn't too much of a test, but more like a gentle ramp up from preseason competition so that even without#9 and if Doubs isn't 100% we still come away with a W.

I get it. I just don’t believe it. It’s like a song from the 80s.
Ever heard the lyrics (Theme from “Greatest American Hero”)
So all of Packer Nation has fallen for Love, and he’s walking on Air.
Well to win; it takes a great Qb,
And it’s easy to find fault in Rodgers after the smear.

Sure the packers have depth.
Because they got draft picks; for their best players.
So the skies the limit and they can live off the suckers.
But they haven’t proved anything yet.
Like you stated: The first test is Adversity.
Somehow I think it’s more than that.
And the main problem of every team is injuries.

We is a great way to say friends, groups, and avoid the me.
But "me" is exactly what Gute has pulled off.
So let's see what the "we" can do this Sunday.
And the many games after this.

He covered Nijman in RFA and now he's the #4 Offensive tackle with little trade value. The Bears grabbed Edmunds and another Badger, Edwards to team with Badger Two, Sanborn to try to control the opponent's running game.
We will see who prevails Sunday. I am cautiously optimistic regarding Bhak's ability to hang in there, but a One pick at OT would have covered the bet. No doubt, the old cover my ass with the greenhorns excuse is Gutedkunst's fallback story, but he had six years to get it right. The depth chart looks like swiss cheese.

OT isn’t our issue this year.

I just hope that the OL coaching proves not to be one either. The Stenovich/Butkus collective hasn’t got a great record since the Championship switcheroo. Newman is worse than as a rookie, Nijman seems disfavored, Tom is at the one position He seemed least suited to and where they preferred Newman a year ago over Tom. Not to mention the great strides by Hanson BS last year and the refusal to really push Myers.

I used to think Stenovich was an asset. I’ve come to doubt that more and more.

You do have a valid point.
Had Gute drafted a OT.
Bahk might have been traded.
The thinking is Rebuild anyway.
Or Fixing the Cap.
(I saw BPA. and P. Smith age.
And since Tom looks ready.)
But the choice was Bahk.
And never having enough edge rushers.
Bahk never requested a trade.
That may have been the Keeper.

THe choice was a RT to fill the void after Bulaga .Talented Depth at OT. Bookends. Like WR, an OT should be secured with high picks( 1&2s) to secure the health of your QB. If the restocking had been in play, you would not have Turner moving to LT in 2020 when Bhak's knee snapped and a retread trying to cover the RT. No SB 4 U. In 2022 and 2023 an OT should have been snagged by rd two. The 2024 draft reads OT and WR with one picks, if Rodgers stays in one piece. Move Tom to center. You can hit on edge guys with # three picks, but his picks go into deep space nine; hopefully Rhyan can move to RG if Runyan gets rocked on bull rushes. Two big and quick DTs give the defense an advantage. Run the 4-3/4-2.

The Bears are coming to play to stop the run and force Love to beat them via the pass. If the Packers execute in the run game they will be fine. If they can't move the ball effectively on the ground it could be a long day in Chicago. Opening games are always difficult to assess because both teams will be facing unscouted looks.

It becomes a question of which team executes more effectively and limiting turnovers. I'm hoping that the Packers have gotten the missed snap exchanges out of their system.

Even without Watson the Packers should be able to take this game providing that they don't defeat themselves with sloppy play, turnovers and/or stupid penalties. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

I do hope the Bears load the box to stop the run. We need to run some play action and that should open things up for the passing game. I don't think we can rely on running the ball with much success when they load the box, which I believe many teams will against us. I trust Love to make good decisions and I like our receivers a lot!

We will be fine.

If we execute on offense, get people blocked and make good solid tackles on defense we should be fine. Keep Fields confined will also be a key to the game. Often times not beating yourself is just as important as defeating the opponent. ON TNF the Chiefs beat themselves more than the Lions did to defeat the Chiefs. Dropped passes alone killed the Chiefs in that game. Thanks, Since '61

It all begins this Sunday. . . against Chicago. Nothing else matters. All the talk, all the hope, all the dreaming, all the expectation, all the hype boils down to this first game of this first season without you-know-who at the helm.

A new beginning. A blank slate.

The Packers have no identity, yet. Just a name. But maybe that's all they need: just a name, The Packers.

It suddenly occurs to me that maybe Jordan Love will be ( is? ) like Bart Starr was: a quiet unassuming brilliant quarterback of a brilliant team: the Packers.

I am sure Coach Luke would be pleased to let Coach Matt use it...seems this is how the Packers are also approaching this season.

A plethora of talent on the Pack...Synergies can be harnessed throughout all three squads. Starts up front with the big men on both sides of the ball. Should help the DBs and the young WRs.

If Doubs plays, I actually think we see as much. If not more of Heath. Heath is the obvious X. I think Toure gets snaps unless Doubs is 100%, which is unlikely. I would not be surprised if they bring up Melton as a speed option and give Wicks longer to get back and up to speed—one dodgy hammy is enough risk.

Probably over the top from Cory....as usual. But there is some truth in it in the WR department. The Safety group...NO. I do believe on offense we have multiple YOUNG, talented players, that will be able to contribute. In a year or so I think we could be dynamic on offense and I hope we get the Colts RB in the next few weeks to throw in the run game for the next 3-4 years also, like I think Gute may intend to do. It should be a good, tough game and I am expecting a GB win and at very least a tough out, in a LOSS. I would also like to see a B. Baker (S) pick-up from the Cardinals...We definitely need that this season. I see much more energy on this team this pre-season...and it should carry over, not lethargic and in between gears all the time like the recent past. Let's hope ML full control in the game plan works better than the salty vet way. Let's hope offense and defense can finally accomplish in game adjustments to their initial master plan....

I question prioritizing Jonathan Taylor as an in-season FA addition.. That can S room is a higher priority, and could be improved for less. I expect Gutey will take at least a few weeks to evaluate what's needed.

We may not have both Jones or Dillon next season. Gute needs to keep the offense moving for Loves development and our teams dual threat ability in the run/ pass game. The Safety group is underwhelming and Savages salary will be off the books next year as well as A.Jones...as much as I like him. You're right about not needing Taylor this year but it would give time to learn the playbook and ability to trade a RB at the deadline for a starting Safety type regardless of our 2023 season outcome. Next year we will have AR off the books and A.Jones CAP hit is too high. As well as D. Bak.

Not really worried about thr talent on the team it is thier . Yes we can nit pick and and say safties are a concern but every team has a talent concern somewhere on the roster.

I really hope the defensive coaches have turned a page they ate the biggest concern on this team by far. If a killer attitude has been installled snd the defensive coaches have turned the page it should be a fun season.

I agree that this is a very young and talented roster that Gute has assembled. Deep at many positions however unproven yet loaded with potential. I think expectations should be tempered, 7-10 IMO would be a successful season.
The defense will be the key to allowing time for the young offense to grow and gain confidence. I consider this a 17 game extended 2024 preseason. Players will have plenty of opportunity to prove themselves for next year. The retooling of this team will really take shape next season when $58M of dead cap is cleared. That'll go a long way to signing free agents to shore up S, CB, RB, OL.

Let's not forget the draft capital we have for next year. We're all hoping for the Jets to go 0-17 and Rodgers plays his 65%. As well I think Bahk could net us a 2nd round pick before the deadline should a SB contender lose a tackle.

Exciting to watch the development of a new ascending team with so many possibilities to make it even better this off season.

There's not a second rounder that has the upside potential and less risk than Bakh. Our CB room is good. Next draft could prioritize interior linemen as a secondary priority to S, but moving Tom to C greatly improves our balance since we have 4 very competent OTs.

What would make the 2023 Green Bay Packers season a success?

For me, it is a North Division Title.

That would sweeten the pot, yes. I'm still wanting to see 100% effort from every player, every down, every game, all season long. We certainly didn't have that last year and I'm not sure how long it's been. I've seen that so far, but it's a long season ...

"Don't be worried about losing a No. 1 wideout — the Packers have many ways to win."

I can't tell if this headline is from this season or from last season....

If we don't beat the fresh off a 3-14 season Bears are we still doing the whole "In Gute We Trust" ???
Is MM still not an idiot????

If this season goes to crap I'm pretty sure we are gonna see a lot of people blaming the people most responsible.....the coaches that MM and Gute hired and the guy they traded to the Jets...
