Packers Practice Roundup: August 6, 2025

2hr, 5min practice.  Demovsky  [Practices have been longer this year, substantially so.  TGR]

PARTICIPATION:

Returned: T Rasheed Walker (groin) DL Arron Mosby (groin) TE Messiah Swinson (illness) DNPs: RB Emanuel Wilson (knee) WR Dontayvion Wicks (calf) CB Nate Hobbs (knee) OL Travis Glover (shoulder) CB Kamal Hadden (hip) RB MarShawn Lloyd (groin) WR Christian Watson (knee) DE Collin Oliver (hamstring) OL John Williams (back).  2) Warren Brinson favoring shoulder after play, with Bryan Engel and trainers now.  Brinson now walking to Hutson center with assistant trainer Kurt Fielding.  Hodkiewicz

Brooks, Brinson drop out.  2)  Karl Brooks appeared to get poked in the eye during a one-on-one rep with Sean Rhyan. Brooks walked off with a towel over his eye and was with a member of the medical staff. Demovsky

PERSONNEL:

Abanikanda definitely is the type of one cut rusher (RB) the Packers like.  Hodkiewicz

OFFENSE:

Lecitus Smith getting center reps for the 3’s after it’s been such a struggle for Jennings & Hill.  2) Willis with a heck of a throw to Hicks. Great job finding him quick with pressure on him. Hicks went up to get it. King in coverage. Julian Hicks makes plays. Great one handed snag.  Herman

Jordan Morgan working at LT. Gets beat by Lukas Van Ness, who stuffed Josh Jacobs. A few reps later, Morgan has a false start. Anthony Belton replaces him, punishment for a false start.  Wood

1 x 1s:  by Andy Herman

Nixon unreal coverage on Golden down the field in 1x1. Nearly a pick.

Reed smokes King.

Sims with an absolutely gorgeous route vs McKinney to get open but drops it deep at the end. Right on his hands.

Dunn absolutely phenomenal coverage on Heath and a pbu.

Lumpkin catches bobbling ball vs Williams who had good overage.

Bullard hold on Hardman Valentine pbu on Hobbs. Def got away with contact

Nixon once again picture perfect coverage on Golden this time on a go route.

Another pbu Swinson catch vs Omar Brown

Throw wide to Musgrave who had a step on Zayne

Bo shuts down Johnson on the press.

Robinson a hold on Sheppard

King great coverage on Reed.

Overthrown too Doubs with a go vs Valentine and toasts him for a td. Doubs is on a heater.

Bo Melton with a pick vs Hicks

Hardman smokes Bullard deep for a Td

Heath great concentration on a contested catch for a deep td on a go.

Sheppard slight step on Robinson deep but overthrown

Williams pbu vs Lumpkin. Almost another juggling catch.

Swinson beats Baldwin but can’t control the catch falling down.

Nixon awesome contest on a slant to Golden but Golden somehow strong hands it for a contested catch.

Valentine pbu vs Doubs. These two are absolute must watch.

Red zone coming up: 1st and 10 at the 20. 1st & 10: 5 yard run by Jacobs 2nd & 5: play action complete to Musgrave for maybe 1. 3rd & 4: complete to Kraft on a slant vs McKinney for a 1st. 1st & goal: Jacobs inside stuffed by Wyatt. Maybe a couple. 2nd & goal: Jacobs inside run. Offense thinks TD. Defense disagrees. They call it just short. (I like Jacobs odds of getting in, in a real game). 3rd & goal: trips formation to the left.  Herman

Outstanding rep from Israel Abanikanda in pass pro drill. Absolutely stoned Cooper. With two backs banged up he should be getting more looks and if he can keep that up in teams could start to make a case.  Nagler  [He is a candidate for the PS - quite a few favorable mentions during these open practices.  TGR]

DEFENSE:

Matthew Golden had elevated to marching Keisean Nixon in 1v1. Nixon blanketed Golden on a pair of deep routes, giving no separation, and dropping a pick on first rep. On their third, Golden beat Nixon on a slant. Strong catch with Nixon draped on his back. Great test for the rook.  [This goes under defense since it speaks more about Nixon, imo.  TGR]  2) Romeo Doubs torched Carrington Valentine for TD from go route from a Malik Willis. Also drew a DPI on a stop route. On their third rep, Valentine played go route perfectly to force from Jordan Love. Valentine stood over Doubs after the PBU.   3) Jordan Love finds Romeo Doubs in the back end zone against Carrington Valentine on 2-point conversion.  4)  Bo Melton forces the incompletion against Malik Heath on goal-line fade to prevent 2-point conversion.  Wood

Another day, another play by Stackhouse helping to stuff a run.  2) Kenny Clark all over a toss play to Jacobs. That looked like prime Kenny! Clark/Wyatt/McDuffie stuff a run on the next play as well.  3) Deslin Alexandre with a sack on Elgersma. Dude makes a play every day.  4) Nixon all over an outside screen to Brooks. Nixon is bringing it today!  5) Enagbare and Wooden combine for pressures but Love held the ball a bit too long there. They did give him the throw away tho.  6) [Some kind of sequence in team or the like:]  LVN comes clean and completely untouched for a safety on Love. MLF not happy after the play. Love complete to Golden on an out route. Nice timing. Love a bit behind Jacobs on a crosser. Might have been expecting him to sit down in the zone. LVN w/ a run stuff off tempo.  7)  McDuffie undercuts a Love throw but can’t come down with it. Nazir Stackhouse and Colby Wooden getting some reps with the 1’s here. Devonte Wyatt with a sack of Love vs Banks Edge Cooper pbu vs Kraft. Defense came to play today.  Herman

Barryn Sorrell had another strong day with the twos. Showed natural power & balance vs Telfort.  2) Edgerrin Cooper PBU show today at Nitschke. Dude everywhere.   Hodkiewicz

MISCELLANEOUS:

Strong practice today for Bo Melton. Not just forcing incompletion on 2-point conversion. Melton also had INT against Sean Clifford on a Will Sheppard stop route in 1v1 earlier in practice. Getting consistent 2nd-team reps, not sure position change could be going better at this point.  Wood

Most impressive Packers newcomer? "Matthew Golden," Jordan Love said without hesitation. "He's gonna be a stud." "Very aggressive hands, smooth route runner, he's got speed." Kevin Clark

LaFleur said that Brenton Cox has “had a lot of great plays” in training camp. Adds he’s excited to see him in the preseason.  Bretl

Matt LaFleur says Javon Bullard has had an “outstanding” camp. “I know you guys probably look at a 1-on-1 rep and he gets beat, but that’s not what we’re looking at.”  Schneidman  [Arghh!! So, are you looking at the round in which he was drafted?  TGR]

Most of Javon’s poor plays have been in 1x1’s which isn’t real football. Matt mentioned the same as well. He stated what they’ve asked him to do at safety, in the slot, and in the box he’s done an outstanding job with.  Herman [So, I have been answered and now I again remind myself to give the kid a chance.  TGR]

Jordan Morgan false start, immediately gets pulled for Belton on the final play for the ones in this teams session.  2) Elgton Jenkins is talking nuclear levels of trash to the defensive group during one on ones. Love it. 3) Defense gets the push ups. That’s practice 11 in the books.  Nagler

Sleep on Malik Heath at your own risk. He’s having a really really nice camp. Just skied for a pass over the middle of the field for a completion from Willis off PA.  2) LaFleur on Mecole Hardman: “He’s made a splash play every day.”  [Both Heath and Hardman are unlikely to make the 53, so we shall see.  TGR] Herman

Matt LaFleur was asked by Kevin Clark about the “badasses” on the Packers. He rattled off the names you’d expect… but he also specifically mentioned RB Chris Brooks. “Guys like Chris Brooks, who might not get the national attention. He’s a badass.” Kruse

Nixon is a primo guy. He had the second most snaps on defense last year. He's developed and improved since he came to Green Bay. Since he won't be playing in any exhibitions, this is it for a while.

He's always been great on run support which is why he started in the slot. Now it sounds like he's backing up his CB1 comment from the end of last season.

Nixon has only played significant CB/Slot for the last two years while in Green Bay. He has improved each year. It is great to read (not unexpected) he is making consistent plays in camp.

Young man is a football player! Thanks for the synopsis, TGR.

I saw some footage of Golden vs. Nixon and Doubs vs. Valentine. Those are some great battles.

Hardman vs. Heath is going to be a tough decision for Gute if it comes down to that.

I keep hearing about these bottom of the roster WRs making good showings, but it never seems to be the same one for more than a week or so. This spring it was Cornelius Johnson. At the beginning of camp, it was Sam Brown, but he left with an injury settlement. Now it's Julian Hicks. Even Will Shepard has had some good moments, and he caught a nice TD on Family Night. Too bad for these guys that they are just fighting for spots on the practice squad.

I wonder if Lukas Van Ness will get much playing time against the Jets on Saturday. I would like to see him go up against a starting OT. Last year he had some good moments against backups in practice but got stymied by better competition in the preseason games. This year I think he's beaten Rasheed Walker a couple times, but most of his success has come against Jordan Morgan, and I don't know if Morgan is very good at this point.

Travis Glover needs shoulder surgery and will miss the whole season. What a bummer for him.

I was going to go to practice Thursday but I don't think I can go.

Glover is really unfortunate.

If the Packers do what they've done, you will not see LVN in these games, and certainly not more than a few snaps.

The Glover injury does not affect the top 8 OL . We'll see if he can win a spot on the roster next year.

We have a math problem at WR. Golden is going to be on the field for quite a few of the snaps. Ditto with Reed. Given that we don't throw 30 passes on average, in a game, that's a limited number of WR snaps and targeting opportunities. You throw to the TE 8 times. The backs, twice. You throw it to your best WR 8 times.......that's only going to leave about 8 opportunities to divide among Doubs, Wicks, and Williams.

Yeah, I don't expect to see much of LVN in the preseason, if at all.

I don't think Savion Williams is going to be targeted much this year. Right now I'm seeing roughly equal amounts of targets for Doubs, Golden, Reed, and Wicks. At least to begin with. It's bound to change as the season goes on. Reed is limited somewhat by playing only in the slot, so he's not on the field in two-WR sets, but he's really good.

If they're only practicing less than 3 hours a day, how do these starters get their game legs when the don't play in preseason? Everyone says that they're professionals, but it sure shows up with fatigue in the first couple of games, especially with the linemen. I know they don't want injuries, but doesn't it lead to injuries if you're not in game shape and the others across from you might be? Now that the NFL is starting to put important division games on starting weekend, it might be important to be ready.

Not gonna happen. Not for the Packers and not for any of the other 31 teams in the league.

You don't have to practice 3-4 hrs a day to be game ready. Wearing the pads and some hitting in practice will get them there. Also, Pack practices pretty much the same as all other teams.

""I don't think Savion Williams is going to be targeted..........""

I think he'll get a couple of touches every game. Whether that's a handoff, a long handoff, or something else. He is essentially a second RB on the field, and that's how I think he'll be used.

Remember back in the day when fullbacks played? In addition to blocking, they caught passes. William Henderson got targeted 2-3 times a game for about 10 years. I think that if you have Jacobs and Williams on the field, and probably put Williams in motion, it gives the defense more to be concerned with. That's a real threat that sets up for the play-action to Golden or Reed or Kraft.

As I stated earlier, Golden and Williams are the future. This is the last chance for Doubs and Watson. Reed and Wicks are halfway through their rookie contracts. IMO, the old dogs like Watson and Doubs won't get targeted as often as the other 4.

It will definitely change when Watson get’s back. It’s a great dilemma to have, but it will be hard to keep all of them happy throughout the year. I wonder if they won’t consider trading one for a CB. I’d have to think it’s under consideration.

Don't under-estimate Doubs. I believe he is the veteran WR stepping up the most so far in camp.

I can see many snaps using Doubs, Golden, Reed as the preferred trio. The math is going to affect Wicks, Heath and Williams more for sharing snaps...assuming all 6 make the 53. They will also compete with Kraft, Musgrave, JJ, Lloyd for targets.

We'll probably throw fewer than 30 passes most games. Kraft, IMO, has earned more targets. Add in a healthy Musgrave and we're under 20 remaining targets. A few to Jacobs.

A number of "experts" have essentially said that Golden is our best WR, and he'll be our #1, and he should get the most targets.

Now, we're down to about a dozen targets to split between Reed, Doubs, Watson, Williams, Wicks. I don't see anybody getting that many targets. Golden, Reed, and Doubs on first down is a pretty good group.

It is very good to read about consistent Camp performances regarding LVN, Kenny, Cooper, Nixon, Valentine, the Safety Trio...even Melton answering the bell.

Same on Offense with Love hitting his targets, JJ getting his yards, Brooks playing well, and Doubs, Golden, Reed making plays. We may finally have a two headed monster forming with "12" personnel. What a help that would be in the pass AND run game.

And also a happy camp story...no angst or concern about the FG operation.

There have been a lot of positives during the pre season thus far. However, my biggest disappointment has been the prolonged unavailability of Marshon Lloyd. I thought he was a fantastic fourth pick of the 24 draft but as yet he has not been even assessed in terms of his running back potential.

Our first two games are at home against two top playoff teams: Detroit and Washington. For better or for worse they will set the tone. That is why I think our first team needs to play a series or two in the preseason games. It will be too late to work out any kinks once Detroit hits the field opening day. This could literally be a preview of the NFC championship game. Lets not kid ourselves. Detroit is the team to beat in the division. We know they will be ready to roar.
