Browns Sign LB Chris Gocong to Extension

According to NFLPA records, the Cleveland Browns have signed linebacker Chris Gocong to a one-year contract extension.

Acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles along with Sheldon Brown in exchange for linebacker Alex Hall and a pair of mid-round picks in the 2010 NFL Draft, Gocong had signed his "Original Round" restricted free agent tender, which was to pay him a non-guaranteed base salary of $1.176 million dollars this season.

Gocong is now scheduled to earn $1.65 million dollars in 2010, and is signed for the 2011 season at a base salary of $1.7 million dollars. Gocong presumably received some guaranteed money as part of his new deal with the Browns.

A third-round pick (71st overall) out of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo by the Eagles in the 2006 NFL Draft, Gocong spent his rookie season on injured reserve. Gocong has since started 35 of 47 games over the last three seasons, totaling 169 tackles, 4 quarterback sacks, and 8 passes defensed.

Valued for his leadership and versatility by new Browns general manager Tom Heckert, who was the general manager in Philadelphia when Gocong was drafted, the 6-2, 263-pound Gocong has worked at both outside and inside linebacker in the Browns' 3-4 defensive system during the team's OTAs and mini-camp.
